Chapter 42: Fractured Loyalties
The white moon hung lower than it ever had.
Across every battlefield, every realm, every hidden chamber, its light pressed down like a silent judgment. Those who could feel it knew the same truth: the war was no longer spreading.
It was synchronizing.
Abandoned Cave System – Beneath the Old Mountains
The cage shook as the Man Bat slammed against it again. Silver-lined chains bit deeper into Ri Kwon Jae's wrists. The vampire's head hung forward, black hair dripping with sweat and blood. His mouth never stopped moving.
Gibberish poured out of him in a continuous, broken stream—words that did not belong to any living tongue. The sound made the shadows recoil.
The Man Bat no longer cared about orders. Hunger had eaten its mind. It reared back, jaws opening wide enough to crush the entire cage—
Then the temperature in the cavern dropped.
Lupin Stillfang stepped out of the tunnel darkness, hands in his pockets, expression bored. Fenrir's right hand looked more annoyed than alarmed.
"You're loud," he said.
The Man Bat spun and screamed.
Lupin cracked his neck. "Fine."
The transformation was brutal. Bones snapped and lengthened. Muscle surged. Dark fur exploded across his body. In three heartbeats the quiet loner was gone, replaced by an eight-foot-tall wolf with claws like curved daggers and eyes that burned with cold fury.
Lupin Stillfang hit the Man Bat like a force of nature.
The impact cracked the cave walls. The two monsters tore into each other with raw, animal violence—claws raking, teeth sinking, blood (black and red) spraying across ancient stone. The gibberish coming from Ri Kwon Jae grew louder, as if the vampire was trying to speak through the chaos.
The white moon's light filtered through a crack in the ceiling, watching.
Hell – Domain of Unforgiveness
Peter Shotstock's shotgun was empty.
He swung it like a club, smashing through the endless parade of shadows that wore the faces of everyone he had ever failed. The black stone plain stretched forever under a blood-red sky. Iron chains whispered names he tried not to remember.
One shadow looked exactly like the partner who had died taking a bullet meant for him. Another wore the face of the child who had waited for an extraction that never came.
Peter's voice was almost gone. "I already carry you. Every day. You don't get to finish me."
He drove the stock through another face. Ash exploded. Three more rose.
The deep voice of the Domain rolled across the plain, almost gentle. "You will break here."
Peter spat blood and kept swinging, even as the white moon's light somehow bled through the red sky above.
Hell – Domain of Greed
The mountain of coins had become a living thing.
Meteor Boy and Cryogenesis stood back to back as treasure constructs rose against them—figures of gold and bone that now copied their own powers. One burned with stolen flame. Another radiated stolen frost.
Cryogenesis froze entire sections solid. Meteor Boy crashed down like a true meteor, detonating constructs in bursts of molten heat. But every time they destroyed something, the Domain built more.
The laughing voice of Greed echoed everywhere. "Take it. You want power. You want to never feel small again."
Meteor Boy's fists burned brighter. "I don't want your trash."
Far above, the white moon's light touched the endless gold, and the mountain seemed to shiver with new hunger.
Hell – Domain of foroth
Time moved like wet cement.
Blinkstrike's teleports had become short, painful hops. The floating island of rotting beds and broken clocks pulled at him with soft, relentless gravity. Jayse the Caveman roared and smashed his club into the soft ground again and again, refusing to sink.
The slow voice whispered, "Why struggle? Lie down. The war will wait."
Blinkstrike grabbed Jayse's shoulder and forced another dual teleport. "We don't get to rest."
The Domain sighed and grew new beds around their feet like eager hands. Even here, the white moon's light somehow pressed down, making the heaviness worse.
Hell – Domain of Wrath
The canyon screamed.
Rivers of boiling blood surged higher. Faces of pure rage formed in the stone walls. Ofentse's translation power was overloaded by the constant furious roars. Rona's blade never stopped moving—precise, disciplined, perfect.
A massive blood-and-stone construct charged them. Rona split it. Ofentse turned its own fury back on itself. The pieces tore one another apart.
But the canyon only grew louder.
Ofentse wiped blood from his nose. "It's not running out."
Rona's eyes stayed sharp. "Then neither do we."
The white moon's light touched the boiling rivers, and the rage seemed to intensify.
Realm of Mysteria
The crystal forests were dying.
Nathan's illusions layered over one another in desperate complexity—false armies, mirrored paths, phantom landscapes that bought seconds at a time. Vespera's void ate through them relentlessly.
The Six Rings pulsed on their pedestal like hearts about to burst. Selene's voice cracked as she poured everything into the stabilizing array. "The merge rate is accelerating! If we lose even one ring, Mysteria collapses!"
Grug was down on one knee. Eddie's gadgets sparked and failed. The Labyrinth Lord twisted space again and again so Paradonitious could strike from impossible angles.
Nathan's voice was barely human. "We hold the rings. Even if it kills us."
Vespera's laughter rolled through the breaking realm.
And through the shattering crystal canopy, the white moon watched.
Willowbrook High School – Ruined Main Hall
Jackson had Wyatt pinned against the collapsed wall hard enough to crack the remaining plaster.
Black mist poured from the Soul Eater's hands and coiled around Wyatt's throat and chest like living ropes. Wyatt's body convulsed, eyes flickering between his own and the deeper black of R. Dodger.
"Get. Out." Jackson's voice was almost soft. "You don't belong in him."
The thing inside Wyatt laughed through bloodied teeth. "Little Soul Eater thinks he can force me—"
Jackson's fist slammed into his ribs, then his face, then his stomach. Each impact was precise and brutal. The black mist sank deeper, searching for the foreign presence.
Across the hall, Kevin fought the regenerating white-masked creature alongside Lancelot Ito and Ignis Lau. Lancelot moved with bored precision, water forming into pressurized blades and whips. Ignis fought with aggressive fire, every so often snapping at Lancelot when their elements collided in violent bursts of steam.
"Stop putting out my fire!" Ignis shouted.
"Stop aiming carelessly," Lancelot replied flatly.
Ivan Petrov remained near a toppled vending machine, pale and shaking, looking every bit the terrified ordinary student. He flinched every time something exploded.
The white moon's light poured through the shattered windows, and the distortion around Wyatt grew stronger.
USA – The Hood → Presidential Secret Sublevel
The black sedan looked completely wrong on the cracked street.
Devonte Murtizy saw the agent coming and already had a hand near his waistband. "The fuck you doing around here, nigga? You lost?"
Lil Micah, the small puppy beside him, suddenly barked in a rapid stream that twisted into messy words. "Agent—car—president—move—"
The agent swallowed hard. "…We even got talking puppies now? Get in."
Devonte kissed his mother on the forehead, scooped Lil Micah under one arm, and followed.
When the elevator doors opened onto the secret sublevel, Cohen Washington—twenty-two years old and President of the United States—stood waiting with his hands in his pockets.
Devonte blinked. "…Cohen? You the President now, huh?"
Cohen's serious face cracked into a real smile. "I missed you, Devonte."
"I did too, nigga."
They pulled each other into a rough, long hug.
Cohen led him into the deeper chamber. Damon stood over a large map. Tiago the Historian sat nearby with a thick volume, eyes carrying the weight of too many pasts. Both had been with them since Volume One.
Devonte stopped. "Damon… that you?"
Damon gave a tired smile. "Long time no see, Devonte."
Cohen closed the door. "Supernatural Higher Ups almost killed him. I pulled him out myself."
Then Khaos Hyde stepped from the shadows—one person, the dual-natured force of chaos and toxin—followed by Poison.
Devonte's gun was out instantly.
Cohen raised his hands. "They're with us now."
Devonte didn't lower it immediately. "Aight. But if either of them try some shit, I'm glocking they asses."
Khaos Hyde looked faintly amused. Poison simply nodded.
Cohen tapped a tablet. Live feeds appeared showing Kent and Steve in hospital beds, alive and stable.
"Robo-Bot extracted them," Cohen said. "They're under Doctor Thomas Watson—top-tier, never lost a patient, cured cancer permanently. His apprentice Sophia can numb pain with a touch."
On the screen, Sophia rested her hand on Kent's shoulder. The pain lines on his face smoothed instantly. Doctor Watson checked readings with calm precision.
Devonte finally holstered the gun. "…Aight. I'm listening."
The white moon's light somehow reached even this underground chamber, casting long, pale shadows across the map table.
Guardians of Destiny Headquarters – Quiet Corridor
Bane Mugabe leaned against the wall, arms crossed. Loki Nyden stood nearby, currently wearing a tired young man's face. For once, neither performed.
Loki's voice was low. "My family never asked what I wanted. Only what shape I should take next. Perfect son. Perfect weapon. Perfect lie."
Bane gave a humorless breath. "Mine measured every grade, every fight, every smile. Anything less than flawless was failure. I hid the cracks so well I forgot where I put them."
Loki's face flickered, showing something younger underneath. "Do you ever wonder who we'd be if they hadn't demanded perfection?"
Bane stared at the floor. "Every day. And every day I put the mask back on anyway."
They stood in shared silence as the white moon's light touched the high windows.
Captive Apartment – Aftermath
The door hung from its hinges. Two of Obito's men lay unconscious in the hallway.
Bangu staggered into the back office, wrists raw, one eye swelling shut. He had escaped through pure stubborn violence. He swept everything off the desk until a single file remained.
Lucifer Jr. — The Black Angel
He opened it. The first page showed a young man with dark wings and eyes that looked like they had already seen the end of the world.
Bangu's voice came out rough. "…What the hell are you?"
Outside the broken window, the white moon hung lower still.
Across every Domain of Sin, every breaking realm, every blood-stained street and secret chamber, the white moon's light connected them all.
The war was no longer separate battles.
It had become one.
