Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: A Life Not His Own

**Chapter 1: A Life Not His Own**

Rain poured relentlessly over the city, drenching the streets in a cold, gray blur. Neon lights flickered weakly through the storm, reflecting off puddles that rippled with every falling drop. People rushed past one another, umbrellas colliding, footsteps hurried, voices drowned by thunder.

Inside a small apartment room, a boy sat alone.

His name was **Ren Takahashi**.

The room was quiet except for the steady rhythm of rain tapping against the window. The faint glow of his phone illuminated his face as he stared at the screen, watching a battle unfold.

Creatures clashed with explosive force, their trainers shouting commands filled with determination. Every movement was precise, every action meaningful. Victory was earned. Growth was visible.

It was everything his life wasn't.

"…Must be nice," Ren muttered under his breath.

He locked his phone and let it drop onto the bed beside him. His gaze drifted upward, staring blankly at the ceiling. His chest felt heavy, as if something inside him was constantly pressing down.

No achievements.

No close friends.

No real purpose.

Just expectations he couldn't meet and days that blended into one another without meaning.

"If I had another chance…" he whispered, his voice barely audible.

Thunder roared across the sky, shaking the windows.

"…I wouldn't waste it."

A flash of lightning illuminated the entire room.

For a split second, everything was white.

And then—

Darkness.

There was no pain.

No sensation.

No time to react.

It was as if existence itself had been erased.

Ren Takahashi died without even realizing it.

But that wasn't the end.

Something stirred in the void.

Fragments of consciousness drifted like broken glass, scattered and incomplete. Time didn't exist here. Space didn't exist. Only a strange, endless silence.

Then, suddenly—

Memories.

But not his.

They crashed into his mind violently, like a flood breaking through a dam.

Names, places, voices, emotions—

A different life.

A different person.

"Ah—!"

Ren's consciousness jolted violently as the foreign memories forced themselves into him. He couldn't tell where his own thoughts ended and the new ones began.

A name echoed clearly within him.

**Ren Takahashi.**

But… it wasn't the same.

This Ren had lived here.

In this world.

A world filled with creatures. Trainers. Battles.

A world he had once dreamed of.

Pain surged through his mind as the two sets of memories collided, overlapping and merging. He saw glimpses of childhood—running through fields, watching battles, dreaming of becoming a trainer.

Then—

A sudden blank.

The memories stopped abruptly.

Like a story cut off mid-sentence.

"…What… happened…?" he thought.

And then—

His eyes snapped open.

Air rushed into his lungs as he gasped sharply.

He was lying on grass.

Soft. Cool. Real.

The sky above him stretched endlessly, bright blue and cloudless. Sunlight warmed his skin, a stark contrast to the cold rain of his previous life.

"I'm… alive?"

His voice sounded unfamiliar, yet his.

He slowly pushed himself up, his head spinning.

Two lives.

Two sets of memories.

One body.

"…So this is… reincarnation," he murmured.

But something felt wrong.

The memories of this body—this world—were incomplete.

The original "Ren"…

…was gone.

A faint unease settled in his chest.

*Did I… take his place?*

Before he could think further—

"Hey! Are you okay?!"

A voice called out.

He turned his head.

A girl was running toward him.

Her long hair swayed behind her as she approached, catching the sunlight. Her expression was filled with concern, her eyes sharp yet gentle.

She stopped in front of him, slightly out of breath.

"You suddenly collapsed," she said. "I thought something happened to you."

Ren blinked.

The memories in his head reacted instantly.

A name surfaced.

**Aiko.**

"…I'm fine," he said, though his voice carried a slight hesitation.

She narrowed her eyes.

"You don't sound fine."

Ren gave a small, awkward smile.

"I just… felt dizzy for a moment."

Aiko crossed her arms, clearly unconvinced.

"You've been acting strange since morning," she said. "And now you faint in the middle of nowhere? That's not 'fine.'"

Ren froze for a fraction of a second.

*Since morning?*

That meant—

The original Ren had already been acting differently before he collapsed.

Something wasn't adding up.

But he couldn't show that.

"…Maybe I didn't get enough sleep," he said casually.

Aiko stared at him for a few seconds.

Then she sighed.

"…You're terrible at lying."

Ren let out a quiet laugh.

"…Yeah. I figured."

The tension eased slightly.

He stood up slowly, brushing the grass off his clothes.

As he did, his senses sharpened.

The air felt different.

Alive.

Something in the distance caught his attention.

A faint rustling sound.

His eyes narrowed instinctively.

"…Did you hear that?"

Aiko turned her head.

"…Hear what?"

The grass ahead shifted.

Something was moving.

Watching.

Ren's heartbeat quickened.

This wasn't fear.

It was… excitement.

For the first time, his body reacted on its own, instincts kicking in from the memories he had inherited.

"…There's something there," he said quietly.

Aiko's expression changed instantly.

From casual… to focused.

"…Stay back," she said, stepping slightly in front of him.

Ren raised an eyebrow.

"…You think I need protection?"

She didn't look at him.

"You fainted five minutes ago."

"…Fair point."

The grass parted slightly.

And then—

It appeared.

A small creature stepped out cautiously.

Its body crackled faintly with yellow sparks, electricity dancing across its fur. Its sharp eyes scanned the surroundings, alert and ready to react.

Ren's breath caught.

*A real one…*

Not a screen.

Not a game.

Real.

The creature's gaze locked onto them.

Tension filled the air.

Aiko reached for something at her waist.

"…Don't make sudden moves," she whispered.

Ren didn't respond.

He was staring.

Not with fear.

Not with hesitation.

But with something deeper.

Connection.

The creature tilted its head slightly.

As if… it was observing him too.

A strange feeling passed between them.

Something invisible.

Something unspoken.

And in that moment—

Ren understood.

This world wasn't a game.

It was alive.

And he was part of it now.

A slow smile formed on his lips.

"…So this is where it begins."

Aiko glanced at him.

"…What?"

Ren didn't answer.

His eyes remained fixed on the creature.

Calm.

Sharp.

Different.

The wind blew gently across the field, carrying the scent of grass and something else—

Possibility.

His new life had started.

Not as a hero.

Not as someone special.

But as someone who would become something more.

This time—

He wouldn't waste it.
