Chapter 75 - The Firmware Update

[Pantheon Estates - Dimension Sub-Lot 402]

Archmage Vildor stood on his pristine, generic green lawn, his ancient face twitching with humiliation. It had taken him three days and three million Pantheon Tokens in labor, but his terrifying, jagged citadel of black ice was now painted a hideous, HOA-approved shade of "Neutral Beige".

"There," Vildor hissed to himself. "The Dark Elf and her clipboard can leave me alone. I have my privacy."

Suddenly, the sky above his dimension flickered. The static blue horizon fractured into a grid of black and magenta squares.

Vildor gasped as his boots slowly lifted off the grass. The gravity in Sub-Lot 402 had simply turned off. Floating helplessly into the air alongside his beige patio furniture, the Archmage watched in horror as the air temperature rapidly plummeted to absolute zero.

A glowing, neon-blue holographic terminal materialized in front of his floating face.

[WARNING: REALITY OS 1.0 IS NO LONGER SUPPORTED.] [To restore localized gravity, atmosphere, and basic thermodynamics, please install Firmware Update 2.0. Cost: 25 Million Tokens.]

"A firmware update?!" Vildor screamed, freezing as he drifted toward the glitching sky. He frantically channeled his mana to cast a teleportation spell, tearing a rift directly to the Pantheon Customer Service Center.

Vildor crashed onto the polished marble floors of the former Vatican, shivering and gasping for air.

Sitting comfortably behind a teller desk was Victor Thorne, wearing an immaculate midnight-blue suit and sipping black coffee. Beside him stood Valerius, the four-armed celestial engineer and newly appointed CTO, typing furiously on a magical datapad.

"My dimension is broken!" Vildor roared, pulling himself up on the teller desk. "The gravity is gone! The sky is pixelating! Fix it! I paid fifty million Tokens for that realm!"

"You paid for the Generation 1 model, Archmage," Victor said smoothly, tapping his gold-nibbed pen against the Tycoon's Ledger. "As detailed in the Terms of Service, Pantheon Estates does not offer lifetime tech support for legacy dimensions."

"Legacy?! I bought it last week!"

"Technology moves fast," Victor smiled a cold, calculating smile. He gestured to his CTO.

"The fundamental runic structure of your reality is severely outdated," Valerius explained, using his four arms to adjust his corporate tie. "We have deprecated the old Creation Magic algorithms to clear server space in the Void. If you want your physics to render correctly, you must purchase the Version 2.0 patch."

Vildor's hands sparked with desperate, freezing magic. "This is extortion! You broke my world on purpose just to sell me the solution!"

"It is Planned Obsolescence," Victor corrected him, checking his gold pocket watch. "A standard industry practice to ensure recurring revenue from hardware sales. I suggest you swipe your Token card, Archmage. Unless you want your beige citadel to float off into the cosmic abyss."

Defeated, humiliated, and freezing, the legendary Archmage pressed his thumb against the terminal, authorizing the 25 Million Token upgrade just to buy back his own gravity.
