Chapter 38 - Through The Night

The night air felt colder as Stephanie and Maya walked down the quiet street.

Neither of them spoke for a long time.

Cars passed occasionally, their headlights briefly lighting the empty sidewalks.

Everything felt unfamiliar.

Everything felt uncertain.

After walking for nearly thirty minutes, they finally found a small building with a faded sign outside.

A cheap motel.

Stephanie looked at Maya.

"This might work."

Inside, the place looked old but quiet. The man at the front desk barely looked at them as he handed them a key.

The room was small.

A single bed.

A small table.

A dim light hanging from the ceiling.

But for now, it was enough.

As soon as the door closed behind them, Maya sat on the edge of the bed and sighed deeply.

"I can't believe this is happening."

Stephanie quietly locked the door.

Then she walked toward Maya and slowly pulled something from inside her clothing.

An envelope.

Maya looked up.

"What's that?"

Stephanie opened it carefully.

Inside was the money Adrian had given her.

Maya's eyes widened.

"Steph…"

"I hid it before Vanessa took everything," Stephanie explained.

She placed the money on the table.

"This should sustain us for a while."

Maya stared at the money, then suddenly covered her face with her hands.

Her shoulders began to shake.

"Hey," Stephanie said softly.

But Maya couldn't hold it in anymore.

"This is all my fault."

Stephanie frowned.

"What?"

Maya looked up, her eyes filled with tears.

"If I hadn't convinced you to leave the restaurant… none of this would have happened."

Stephanie immediately shook her head.

"No."

"Yes," Maya insisted.

"I pushed you into all of this. I believed Vanessa. I believed the dream."

Her voice cracked.

"And now look where we are."

Stephanie walked closer and sat beside her.

"Maya."

Maya wiped her face but the tears kept falling.

"I ruined everything."

Stephanie gently took her hands.

"Listen to me."

Maya looked up slowly.

"We both made that decision," Stephanie said firmly.

"You didn't force me."

Maya stayed quiet.

Stephanie continued.

"Life doesn't always go the way we expect."

She glanced around the small room.

"But I have a feeling this hard time won't last forever."

Maya stared at her for a moment.

"You really believe that?"

Stephanie nodded.

"I do."

The room fell quiet again.

After a moment, Maya spoke softly.

"Steph…"

"Yes?"

Maya looked down at their hands.

"I don't say this enough."

Stephanie waited.

Maya's voice was quiet but sincere.

"I love you so much."

Stephanie blinked slightly.

"You're the only person who has always stayed with me through everything."

Her eyes filled with tears again.

"No matter how bad things get… I'm glad I'm not facing it alone."

Stephanie squeezed her hand gently.

"We're in this together."

Maya nodded slowly.

Together.

That word meant everything right now.

Later that night, they both lay on the small bed.

But sleep never came.

Instead, they stayed awake, talking quietly in the darkness.

Two girls far from home.

With almost nothing.

But still holding on to one thing that mattered most.

Each other.
