Chapter 41 - A Disappearing Girl

Adrian sat in the back seat of his car as it moved smoothly through the city streets.

His phone rested in his hand.

For the third time that morning, he dialed Stephanie's number.

The call rang once.

Then the automated message came again.

The number you are trying to reach is unavailable.

Adrian frowned slightly and ended the call.

That was strange.

Most girls answered immediately when he called.

He tried again later in the afternoon.

Still nothing.

By evening, he had tried several times.

Each time the same result.

Unreachable.

Adrian leaned back in his seat, staring out the window thoughtfully.

Something about the whole situation didn't make sense.

Stephanie hadn't seemed like someone who would simply disappear.

After a moment, he scrolled through his contacts and tapped another number.

Vanessa.

The phone rang briefly before she answered.

"Adrian," Vanessa said smoothly. "What a pleasant surprise."

Adrian didn't waste time.

"Where's the girl from the other night?"

Vanessa already knew who he meant.

Stephanie.

For a moment she stayed quiet, carefully choosing her words.

"Oh… her."

"What about her?" Adrian asked.

Vanessa sighed softly, pretending to sound slightly annoyed.

"She left."

Adrian's eyebrows pulled together.

"Left?"

"Yes," Vanessa replied.

"Both of them actually. The two girls packed their things and disappeared."

Adrian leaned forward slightly.

"Where did they go?"

Vanessa paused.

Then she shrugged casually, even though he couldn't see her.

"They were talking about going back home."

"Home where?" Adrian asked.

"Los Angeles."

The words settled into the silence between them.

Vanessa watched the moment carefully.

Then she added lightly,

"You know how girls like that are. Always chasing some dream."

Adrian said nothing for a few seconds.

Vanessa decided to push her luck a little.

"Well… if you're still looking for company tonight," she said with a soft laugh, "I could keep you entertained myself."

The silence on the line grew colder.

Then Adrian spoke.

"I don't sleep with older women."

Vanessa's smile froze instantly.

For a split second, anger flashed across her face.

But her voice remained perfectly calm.

"Of course," she said smoothly.

Adrian ended the call without another word.

Vanessa slowly lowered the phone.

Her eyes hardened.

Meanwhile, Adrian sat quietly in the car.

Los Angeles.

So she had left the country.

He looked down at his phone one more time.

For a brief moment, he remembered the way Stephanie had looked at him across the table.

Calm.

Different.

Interesting.

Then he locked the phone and placed it aside.

Whatever curiosity he had felt slowly faded away.

After all…

A girl who had already disappeared halfway across the world wasn't worth chasing.
