Chapter 87 – The Voice Beneath Creation
"Daughter..."
The word remained inside Evetyl's mind.
She couldn't move.
She couldn't breathe.
The voice had not come from the sky.
It had not come from the ancient city.
It had not come from any person standing beside her.
It had come from beneath the world itself.
"Why did you leave me?"
Evetyl stared at the ground.
Kai noticed immediately.
"Evetyl?"
She didn't answer.
"Evetyl."
Kai placed a hand on her shoulder.
She finally looked at him.
"Someone..."
Her voice trembled.
"Someone called me daughter."
Kai's expression changed.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Aren stepped forward.
"I do."
Everyone turned toward him.
Aren was staring at the enormous crack beneath the ancient city.
His face had gone pale.
Evetyl noticed.
"You know that voice?"
Aren swallowed.
"Yes."
"Who is it?"
He looked at Elara.
She was already crying.
Evetyl's heart sank.
"Elara."
Her sister slowly looked at her.
"That's..."
She struggled to speak.
"That's our father."
Silence.
Even the King of Oblivion stopped speaking.
The Curator looked toward the crack.
"Your father?"
Elara nodded.
"But he died."
Aren shook his head.
"No."
Elara looked at him.
"You know what happened."
"I know what they told us."
"That's not the same thing."
Aren looked toward the young man.
"He wasn't erased."
The young man's face remained expressionless.
Aren continued.
"He was sealed."
---
The ground shook again.
The ancient city began sinking.
Buildings cracked.
Roads split apart.
The faceless people remained on their knees.
None of them tried to escape.
Evetyl looked at them.
"Why aren't they running?"
The First Thought answered quietly.
"They're waiting."
"For what?"
The First Thought looked toward the enormous opening.
"For their creator."
A deep sound came from beneath the earth.
Not a roar.
Not a voice.
A heartbeat.
Boom.
The ground moved.
Boom.
The sky trembled.
Boom.
The golden eyes above Crosshaven slowly turned toward the crack.
The Eye whispered,
"They're afraid."
The First Thing looked upward.
"Who?"
"The Observers."
The Eye's voice became quieter.
"They've stopped watching us."
"They're watching what's underneath."
---
Kai looked at the young man.
"You knew this would happen."
"No."
"You knew something was sealed here."
"Yes."
"That's not much better."
The young man didn't respond.
Kai stepped closer.
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because you would have opened it."
Kai frowned.
"We didn't know it existed."
"You were going to find it eventually."
"Then why hide it?"
The young man looked at Evetyl.
"Because she wasn't ready."
Evetyl heard him.
"I'm ready now."
"No."
She turned toward him.
"You don't get to decide that anymore."
The young man stared at her.
Evetyl continued.
"You erased my memories."
"You decided what I could know."
"You decided what I should forget."
She stepped closer.
"I'm done letting other people make those choices for me."
The young man said nothing.
Aren smiled faintly.
"She's definitely our sister."
Elara wiped her tears.
"She always was."
Evetyl looked at them.
A small smile appeared.
Then the ground shook again.
Her smile disappeared.
"Let's find our father."
---
They entered the ancient city.
The streets were strangely familiar.
Evetyl walked slowly.
She recognized things she had never consciously remembered.
A fountain.
A broken statue.
A small bridge.
A house at the end of a road.
Kai noticed her looking around.
"You remember this place?"
"I think so."
"What was it?"
"Our city."
Aren corrected her.
"Not exactly."
"What do you mean?"
"This was where the first family lived."
Evetyl stopped.
"The first family?"
Aren nodded.
"Before the First World."
"Before Crosshaven."
"Before the timelines."
"Before the laws."
Evetyl looked at the buildings.
"Then this is where we came from."
"Yes."
The First Thought slowly walked behind them.
"That means this city predates the first recorded reality."
Aren nodded.
"By a lot."
The Curator looked at the ancient architecture.
"Then why has no record survived?"
Aren looked at him.
"Because the records were written by people who came after us."
The Curator frowned.
"And who recorded the first history?"
Aren smiled.
"No one."
The Curator looked confused.
"Why?"
"Because there was no language."
"No writing."
"No history."
"Only memory."
The First Thought stopped walking.
"Then the First Memory..."
Aren nodded.
"Was the first historian."
Evetyl looked at him.
"I remembered everything."
"Yes."
"That's why I became the First Memory."
"Yes."
"But if I was the first historian..."
She looked toward the ancient city.
"...who remembered the people before me?"
Aren didn't answer.
Elara did.
"Nobody."
Evetyl stared at her.
"Then how do we exist?"
Elara pointed toward the underground.
"Because someone remembered us."
---
They reached the center of the city.
A huge circular structure stood there.
At its center was a stone door.
It was covered with symbols.
Evetyl approached it.
She recognized them.
"These..."
Kai looked at the markings.
"You know what they mean?"
"No."
She touched one.
"I just feel like I do."
The symbols began glowing.
The door opened.
A cold wind came from inside.
Aren immediately grabbed Evetyl's arm.
"Wait."
She looked at him.
"What?"
"If you go down there..."
"What?"
"You might remember everything."
"Isn't that what we need?"
"No."
Aren's expression was serious.
"Some memories aren't meant to be carried by one person."
Kai stepped beside her.
"Then we'll carry them together."
Aren looked at him.
Kai smiled.
"You don't have to trust me."
"But I'm going anyway."
Cr-Hook raised his hand.
"Can I vote for staying outside?"
The First Anomaly looked at him.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because something tells me the door will close behind us."
Cr-Hook stared.
"That is exactly the information I didn't want."
The Warden walked forward.
Its chains moved across the stone floor.
"We go together."
The First Thing nodded.
"No one separates."
The Curator closed his book.
"Agreed."
The Eye floated toward the entrance.
"I'll watch the path."
The First Thought sighed.
"And I'll record what we can."
Evetyl looked at everyone.
For the first time since the journey began...
She realized they weren't just companions anymore.
They were a family of their own.
Not one created by blood.
One created by surviving together.
She smiled.
"Let's go."
---
The staircase descended farther than it should have.
They walked for what felt like hours.
There were no torches.
Yet the walls gave off a faint blue light.
Ancient paintings covered them.
The first showed a dark universe.
The second showed a single spark.
The third showed a woman.
Evetyl.
But not the Evetyl they knew.
She stood before a giant tree.
The fourth showed three children.
Evetyl.
Aren.
Elara.
The fifth showed a man.
Their father.
His face had been scratched away.
Evetyl stopped.
"Why is his face gone?"
Aren looked at the painting.
"I don't know."
Elara touched it.
"I do."
Everyone turned.
Elara whispered,
"Because we were never supposed to remember what he looked like."
"Why?"
"Because he wasn't human."
Silence.
Evetyl stared.
"What was he?"
Elara looked toward the bottom of the stairs.
"The first guardian."
The First Thing asked,
"Guardian of what?"
Elara answered:
"Creation."
---
They continued.
At the bottom was a massive underground chamber.
A black lake filled the center.
No waves.
No movement.
Just darkness.
At the far end stood a throne.
Empty.
Evetyl stared at it.
"I know that place."
Aren looked at her.
"You've been here?"
"No."
"But..."
She touched her chest.
"I remember sitting there."
The young man suddenly spoke.
"You did."
Everyone turned.
"When?"
"Before the First World."
Evetyl looked at the throne.
"What was I doing?"
The young man hesitated.
"You were choosing."
"Choosing what?"
"Which world would exist."
Evetyl stared.
"Then my father was the guardian."
"Yes."
"And I..."
"You were the creator."
The words echoed.
Evetyl shook her head.
"No."
The young man continued.
"You created the first worlds."
"Your father protected them."
"Aren remembered them."
"Elara watched them."
"And you..."
He looked at Evetyl.
"...eventually became the First Memory."
Evetyl looked toward her siblings.
Aren nodded.
"It's true."
Elara nodded too.
"All of it."
Evetyl whispered,
"Then why don't I remember?"
The young man answered:
"Because you asked me to erase it."
---
Aren's eyes hardened.
"Not again."
The young man looked at him.
"You know why."
"You always use that excuse."
"It's not an excuse."
"You could have trusted her."
"I did."
"Then why didn't you tell her?"
"Because she wouldn't have survived the truth."
Aren stepped toward him.
"You don't know that."
"I watched her die."
The room became silent.
The young man's voice cracked.
"More times than you can imagine."
Aren stopped.
The young man looked at Evetyl.
"Every time the First World ended..."
"You remembered."
"Every time, you tried to save it."
"Every time, you failed."
"Eventually..."
"You stopped sleeping."
"You stopped eating."
"You stopped speaking."
"You only remembered."
Evetyl stared at him.
"You watched?"
"Every time."
"Then you knew what I needed."
"Yes."
"What?"
He looked away.
"To forget."
---
A deep heartbeat echoed through the chamber.
Boom.
The black lake moved.
Everyone turned.
A hand rose from the darkness.
Then another.
Something enormous began pulling itself from beneath the surface.
The water flowed from its body like smoke.
A tall figure emerged.
Its body looked human.
Its skin was pale.
Its hair was long and silver.
But its face...
Was empty.
No eyes.
No nose.
No mouth.
Yet everyone heard its voice.
"Evetyl."
She froze.
The creature took one step forward.
"My daughter."
Aren moved in front of her.
"Stay back."
The creature stopped.
"Aren."
Aren's expression changed.
It knew him.
"My son."
Then it turned.
"Elara."
Elara began crying.
"Father."
The creature raised its hand.
For the first time...
A face appeared.
Not fully.
Just enough.
A tired old man.
A sad smile.
Eyes filled with centuries of loneliness.
He looked at Evetyl.
"I thought you had forgotten me."
Evetyl couldn't speak.
He smiled.
Then his eyes moved toward the young man.
The smile disappeared.
"You."
The young man remained still.
The father stepped forward.
"You broke your promise."
The young man answered quietly.
"I kept it."
"You erased her."
"Yes."
"You erased my children."
"Yes."
"You erased the world."
"Yes."
The father looked toward Evetyl.
"And you still call that protection?"
The young man said nothing.
The father raised one hand.
The entire chamber shook.
The Warden's chains snapped against the floor.
The Curator's book flew from his hands.
The Eye was forced backward.
The First Thought couldn't move.
Kai grabbed Evetyl.
"Evetyl!"
She looked at her father.
He wasn't attacking them.
He was crying.
"I waited."
His voice broke.
"For so long..."
"I waited for my children to come home."
Evetyl slowly stepped forward.
Kai tried to stop her.
She gently removed his hand.
"I need to."
She walked toward her father.
He lowered his hand.
Evetyl stood before him.
"You waited for us."
"Yes."
"I'm sorry."
The father closed his eyes.
"I don't want your apology."
"Then what do you want?"
He opened his eyes.
"I want my daughter back."
Evetyl's heart broke.
"I don't know who she was."
He touched her forehead.
"I do."
The moment his fingers touched her...
The chamber vanished.
Evetyl saw everything.
Her birth.
Her childhood.
Her first world.
Her siblings.
Her parents.
The first creation.
The first death.
The first timeline.
The first anomaly.
The creation of Oblivion.
The birth of Memory.
The making of Crosshaven.
The countless worlds.
The endless failures.
The moment she asked the young man to erase her memories.
The moment she created Kai.
The First Promise.
Everything.
Thousands of years of memories flooded into her mind.
Evetyl screamed.
Kai shouted her name.
The silver mark on his hand exploded with light.
He grabbed her.
"Evetyl!"
She couldn't hear him.
Voices filled her head.
Millions.
Billions.
Every world.
Every death.
Every beginning.
Every ending.
Then—
One voice became louder than all the others.
Kai's.
"Remember me."
Evetyl's eyes opened.
She looked at him.
He was crying.
"You don't have to remember everyone."
He held her hand.
"Just remember me."
The memories began settling.
Not disappearing.
Just becoming quiet.
Evetyl breathed.
She was still standing.
Still herself.
Her father watched in shock.
"You survived."
Evetyl nodded.
"Because I wasn't alone."
Her father looked toward Kai.
For a moment...
He smiled.
Then the chamber began collapsing.
The young man looked upward.
"Too late."
The Curator picked up his book.
"What?"
The young man looked toward the ceiling.
"The Observers have opened the outer seal."
The First Thought's face went pale.
"What happens if the seal breaks?"
The young man answered:
"The world beneath this world wakes up."
Aren stared.
"That's impossible."
The father turned toward the darkness.
"No."
His expression became serious.
"It is already awake."
Everyone froze.
The black lake began rising.
The father looked at Evetyl.
"You need to leave."
"Why?"
"Because what is coming..."
He looked toward the darkness.
"...is not an enemy."
The lake rose higher.
"It is your mother."
Evetyl stopped breathing.
Aren whispered,
"Mother?"
Elara's face became pale.
"No..."
The father looked at them.
"She has been asleep beneath creation since the beginning."
The darkness behind him began opening.
Two enormous eyes appeared.
Evetyl felt a presence older than the First World itself.
Then a voice echoed through the chamber.
"My children..."
The ancient city began shaking.
"Why did you wake me?"
Evetyl looked at her father.
He whispered:
"I didn't."
Then his eyes turned toward the young man.
The young man was staring at the darkness in horror.
And for the first time since Evetyl had met him...
He whispered a name.
A name none of them had ever heard before.
"The First Mother."
The enormous eyes opened completely.
And every world in existence went dark.
To Be Continued...
