Chapter 88 - Chapter 88 – The First Mother

Chapter 88 – The First Mother

Every world went dark.

Not night.

Not an eclipse.

Darkness.

A darkness so complete that even the stars seemed to have forgotten how to shine.

For several seconds, there was no sound.

Then—

Boom.

A heartbeat.

The underground chamber shook.

Boom.

Another heartbeat.

The black lake rose.

Boom.

And somewhere beyond the walls of the chamber, something enormous moved.

Evetyl stood frozen.

Her father's hand was still resting on her shoulder.

Aren and Elara stood beside her.

Kai had not let go of her hand.

The Curator slowly picked up his book.

Its pages were blank.

The First Thought stared at the darkness.

The Eye had stopped moving.

Even the First Thing remained silent.

Then Cr-Hook whispered,

"I have a question."

Nobody answered.

"Are we supposed to be this scared?"

The First Anomaly looked at him.

"I think so."

"Great."

Cr-Hook swallowed.

"I was hoping we were just being dramatic."

Nobody laughed.

That frightened him more than anything else.

---

The young man was staring into the darkness.

Evetyl noticed.

"You know her."

He didn't answer.

"You know the First Mother."

Still nothing.

Evetyl stepped toward him.

"Tell me."

The young man finally looked at her.

"I know what she can do."

"That's not what I asked."

His expression was tired.

"I knew her before she became what she is now."

Aren frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The young man looked at him.

"She wasn't always the First Mother."

Elara stepped closer.

"Then what was she?"

He hesitated.

"Your mother."

Evetyl frowned.

"That's obvious."

"No."

His voice became quieter.

"I mean she was human."

The chamber became silent.

Aren stared at him.

"Our mother was human."

"Yes."

"Then how did she become this?"

The young man looked toward the enormous eyes.

"She remembered too much."

Evetyl felt a chill.

"Like me?"

"No."

He shook his head.

"Much worse."

---

The black lake suddenly moved.

A wave rose into the air.

It didn't fall.

It remained suspended.

Inside the wave, Evetyl saw countless images.

Worlds.

People.

Cities.

Wars.

Births.

Deaths.

Entire civilizations appearing and disappearing in seconds.

Then she saw her mother.

Young.

Human.

Standing in a field.

Aren was beside her.

Elara was holding her hand.

Evetyl was sitting beneath a tree.

Their mother was smiling.

It was such an ordinary memory.

So peaceful.

So warm.

Evetyl's chest tightened.

"That's her."

Her father nodded.

"Yes."

"What happened?"

He looked at the image.

"She wanted to protect us."

Evetyl stared.

"From what?"

"From death."

Aren's expression changed.

"Our mother tried to stop death?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she lost someone."

"Who?"

Her father didn't answer immediately.

Then he looked at Evetyl.

"You."

Evetyl froze.

"Me?"

"You were the first of us to die."

The words hit her harder than she expected.

"I died?"

"Long before the First World."

"What happened?"

Her father closed his eyes.

"You were sick."

"Very sick."

"Your mother couldn't accept it."

"She searched for a way to save you."

Evetyl looked toward the vision.

Her mother was holding a small child.

Evetyl.

She was crying.

Aren stood beside her.

Elara was crying too.

The vision changed.

Their mother entered a strange place.

A place without time.

Without space.

Without boundaries.

And there...

She found something.

A light.

A small, impossible light.

The First Thought whispered,

"The Origin."

The young man shook his head.

"No."

"The Origin came later."

"Then what is it?"

The young man looked toward the light.

"The first possibility."

---

Evetyl stared.

"What did she do?"

"She touched it."

"And?"

"She asked it for one thing."

"What?"

"More time."

The vision changed.

Her mother returned home.

Evetyl was alive.

Healthy.

Laughing.

Aren was running around the house.

Elara was chasing him.

Their father was sitting outside.

For a while...

Everything was perfect.

Then their mother started hearing voices.

At first, only one.

Then hundreds.

Then thousands.

Every possible version of reality.

Every world that could exist.

Every person who could ever be born.

Every death that could ever happen.

She heard all of it.

She couldn't stop hearing.

She began remembering things that hadn't happened.

Things that would never happen.

Things that could happen.

Evetyl whispered,

"She became like me."

The young man shook his head.

"No."

He looked at her.

"You became like her."

---

The vision disappeared.

The First Mother spoke.

Her voice filled the chamber.

"My children..."

The sound made the walls tremble.

"I remember every world."

The black lake rose higher.

"Every child."

"Every death."

Her voice became softer.

"I remember losing them."

Evetyl looked upward.

"Mother..."

The enormous eyes moved toward her.

Everything stopped.

The First Mother looked directly at Evetyl.

"My daughter."

Evetyl's heart raced.

"I remember you."

A pause.

Then the voice answered:

"No."

The entire chamber shook.

"You remember what they allowed you to remember."

Evetyl looked toward the young man.

He lowered his head.

The First Mother continued.

"They took my children from me."

"They erased our home."

"They called it protection."

"They called it balance."

Her voice became filled with anger.

"They lied."

---

Aren stepped forward.

"Mother."

The eyes moved toward him.

Aren swallowed.

"It's me."

The First Mother became silent.

Then—

"Aren."

Aren smiled through his tears.

"Yes."

"You died."

"I know."

"I watched you die."

"I know."

"I searched for you."

Aren lowered his head.

"I'm sorry."

The First Mother remained silent.

Then her voice changed.

"You came back."

"Yes."

"How?"

Aren looked at Evetyl.

"She remembered me."

The First Mother looked at Evetyl.

The chamber trembled.

"You remembered him."

Evetyl nodded.

"Yes."

"Then remember everything."

The moment she said it—

Evetyl's mind exploded.

Millions of memories rushed toward her.

She saw worlds.

Infinite worlds.

She saw Aren dying.

Again.

And again.

And again.

She saw Elara disappearing.

She saw Kai standing alone.

She saw Crosshaven burning.

She saw the Curator closing his book.

She saw the Warden breaking its chains.

She saw the First Anomaly dying.

She saw Noah crying.

She saw the young man standing alone in darkness.

And then...

She saw herself.

Standing before the First Mother.

A thousand years ago.

Or perhaps a million.

Time made no sense.

Her older self was crying.

"Mother."

The First Mother was holding her.

"Don't go."

"I have to."

"Why?"

"Because they're afraid of us."

"I don't care."

"I do."

"You're my daughter."

"I know."

"Then stay."

Evetyl's older self smiled.

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because if I stay..."

She looked toward the countless worlds.

"...everyone else dies."

The First Mother screamed.

"No!"

Evetyl stepped away.

"Mother."

"No!"

"I'll come back."

"When?"

"When I remember."

The First Mother reached for her.

But Evetyl disappeared.

The memory ended.

---

Evetyl collapsed.

Kai caught her.

"Evetyl!"

She was breathing heavily.

"I remember."

"What?"

"My mother."

Kai held her carefully.

"What happened?"

"I left her."

"Why?"

"To save the worlds."

Kai looked toward the First Mother.

Then back at Evetyl.

"Did it work?"

Evetyl shook her head.

"No."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I only made everything worse."

---

The First Mother spoke again.

"You promised you would return."

Evetyl looked upward.

"I did."

"You never came."

"I forgot."

"Because of him."

The First Mother turned toward the young man.

He didn't move.

Evetyl stepped between them.

"No."

The First Mother became silent.

"He didn't make me forget everything."

Evetyl looked at the young man.

"He helped me survive."

Aren nodded.

Elara stepped beside Evetyl.

"He saved us too."

The First Mother remained silent.

Then she asked:

"Why?"

The young man answered.

"Because she asked me to."

The First Mother said nothing.

He continued.

"She knew she couldn't carry everything."

"She knew she would destroy herself."

"So she asked me to erase the memories that were killing her."

The First Mother stared.

"Then why did you erase me?"

The young man lowered his head.

"Because you wouldn't let her go."

The First Mother's voice became cold.

"And you thought you had the right?"

"No."

"Then why?"

The young man looked toward Evetyl.

"Because she was dying."

---

The First Mother suddenly became still.

Then the enormous eyes closed.

The pressure in the chamber disappeared.

For several seconds...

Everything was peaceful.

Evetyl thought it was over.

Then her mother spoke softly.

"I understand."

Everyone relaxed.

Then she continued.

"But I still hate you."

The young man nodded.

"I know."

"I hate what you did."

"I know."

"I hate that you were right."

The young man looked at her.

She continued:

"And I hate that my daughter forgave you."

Evetyl stepped forward.

"I didn't say I forgave him."

The young man looked at her.

Evetyl continued.

"I'm still angry."

Aren smiled.

"Good."

Evetyl looked at him.

"What?"

"You're definitely our sister."

Elara laughed quietly.

"She always gets angry when she's hurt."

"I can hear you."

"I know."

For the first time since the First Mother appeared...

Everyone smiled.

Even Kai.

Cr-Hook whispered,

"We survived the family reunion."

The First Anomaly looked at him.

"Don't celebrate yet."

The smile disappeared from Cr-Hook's face.

"Right."

---

Suddenly...

The First Mother opened her eyes.

The smile vanished from her face.

"Something is coming."

The First Thought immediately looked at its book.

The pages began turning rapidly.

"What?"

"Something entered the timeline."

The Eye moved toward the ceiling.

"I can't see it."

The First Thing frowned.

"Neither can I."

The Warden raised its chains.

"Then it is outside observation."

The Curator's face became serious.

"Outside Crosshaven?"

"No."

The First Thought shook its head.

"Outside reality."

Evetyl looked toward the young man.

"Can you see it?"

He shook his head.

"No."

Aren looked at him.

"Then what are you afraid of?"

The young man answered:

"The thing that existed before my existence."

Silence.

The First Mother suddenly spoke.

"It has found us."

The ground cracked.

A strange sound came from above.

Not a voice.

Not an explosion.

It sounded like someone scratching a fingernail across glass.

The sound repeated.

Slowly.

Closer.

Scratch.

Everyone looked upward.

Scratch.

A thin white line appeared across the ceiling.

Scratch.

Another line crossed it.

Then another.

Something was drawing a shape from the other side.

The First Thought whispered,

"That isn't an opening."

The Curator asked,

"Then what is it?"

The First Thought's face became pale.

"It's writing."

The white lines formed symbols.

Evetyl recognized them.

They were the same symbols from the ancient door.

A sentence appeared.

The First Thought read it.

Then stopped.

"What does it say?" Kai asked.

The First Thought didn't answer.

"Tell us."

It finally whispered:

"THE FIRST MOTHER WAS NOT THE FIRST."

Everyone froze.

A second sentence appeared.

"THE FIRST MEMORY WAS NOT THE FIRST."

Then another.

"THE FIRST WORLD WAS NOT THE FIRST."

A final symbol appeared.

It was different from the others.

Evetyl stared at it.

Something inside her recognized it.

Her mother suddenly screamed.

"NO!"

The entire chamber shook.

Evetyl turned toward her.

"Mother?"

The First Mother stared at the symbol.

For the first time...

She looked terrified.

"Don't let it speak."

"What?"

"Don't let it say your name."

"Whose name?"

The First Mother looked at Evetyl.

Then whispered:

"Your real name."

Evetyl froze.

"My real name?"

Aren stepped backward.

Elara grabbed his arm.

The young man closed his eyes.

Kai looked at Evetyl.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then the symbol on the ceiling changed.

It began forming letters.

Slowly.

One by one.

Evetyl watched them appear.

E

V

E

T

Y

L

Her own name.

The First Mother screamed again.

"NO!"

The symbol completed itself.

The chamber went completely silent.

Then a voice came from beyond the ceiling.

A voice older than memory.

Older than creation.

Older than the First Mother.

It spoke only one sentence.

"That is not your real name."

Evetyl's blood ran cold.

The voice continued.

"Your real name is the name of the first thing that ever existed."

Kai tightened his grip on her hand.

The young man whispered,

"We're too late."

Aren looked at him.

"Too late for what?"

The young man stared at Evetyl.

"She's remembering."

Evetyl's eyes widened.

Something was awakening inside her.

Not a memory.

Not a power.

A name.

A name she had never heard...

Yet somehow had always known.

Her lips began moving.

Kai leaned closer.

"Evetyl?"

She whispered the first syllable.

Then another.

The First Mother covered her face.

Aren looked horrified.

Elara began crying.

And the young man said the words none of them wanted to hear:

"Don't finish it."

But Evetyl couldn't stop.

She finally spoke the name.

And the instant she did...

Every world in existence heard it.

"Aeterna."

The darkness shattered.

And something on the other side of reality answered:

"Welcome back."
