Chapter 86 - Chapter 86 – The First Family

Chapter 86 – The First Family

The sky was filled with eyes.

Thousands of them.

Some were golden.

Some were white.

Some were completely black.

They stared down at Crosshaven without blinking.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the wind had stopped.

Evetyl stood beside Kai, staring at the woman who had just called Aren her brother.

Her sister.

The word felt strangely familiar.

Yet impossible.

Evetyl had spent so long believing she knew the important parts of her past.

Now, every answer seemed to open another door.

And behind every door...

There was another secret.

Aren slowly turned toward the woman.

"You shouldn't be here."

The woman smiled.

"You said that already."

"I mean it this time."

"So do I."

Aren's expression became cold.

"Who brought you back?"

The woman looked toward the young man.

He immediately looked away.

Aren understood.

"You."

The young man said nothing.

The woman laughed quietly.

"Of course it was him."

Evetyl looked between them.

"Stop."

All three turned toward her.

Evetyl stepped forward.

"I'm tired of everyone talking like I'm not standing here."

She looked at Aren.

"You're my brother."

Then at the woman.

"You're my sister."

Finally, she looked at the young man.

"And you're the person who erased both of them from my memory."

The young man lowered his head.

"Yes."

Evetyl's hands tightened.

"Then I want the truth."

"You have it."

"No."

Her voice became firmer.

"I have pieces."

She pointed toward Aren.

"I remember him."

Then toward the woman.

"I remember almost nothing about her."

Then toward the young man.

"And you keep saying you protected me."

She took a breath.

"I want the whole story."

The young man looked at her for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

Aren immediately stepped forward.

"No."

Evetyl looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because once you hear it..."

He glanced toward the sky.

"...you may never look at us the same way again."

Evetyl gave a tired smile.

"At this point, I don't think that matters."

Kai quietly stepped beside her.

"She's right."

Aren looked at him.

Kai continued.

"We've already crossed too many worlds to turn back now."

The woman smiled.

"That's why I always liked him."

Kai frowned.

"Who?"

"You."

She pointed at him.

"You were always stubborn."

Kai looked at Evetyl.

"Apparently I have a reputation."

Cr-Hook whispered to the First Anomaly,

"I like him more every minute."

The First Anomaly nodded.

"Same."

The First Thing stepped forward.

"Enough."

Its voice silenced everyone.

"We need answers."

The First Thought opened its book.

"For once, I agree."

The Eye floated closer.

"And I have another question."

The woman looked at it.

"What?"

"Why are there thousands of eyes in the sky?"

The woman looked upward.

Her smile disappeared.

"Because they are watching the return."

"The return of what?" Noah asked.

She answered quietly.

"The First Family."

---

Aren closed his eyes.

"She shouldn't have said that."

Evetyl looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because now they know we're awake."

"Who?"

Aren looked toward the sky.

"The Observers."

The First Thought immediately turned toward him.

"I know that name."

Aren nodded.

"You should."

"They existed before the first recorded timeline."

"Yes."

"They watched every world."

"Yes."

"They never interfered."

Aren's expression became bitter.

"They lied."

The Eye moved closer.

"Explain."

Aren looked at the thousands of eyes.

"They weren't watching history."

"They were waiting for it."

The sky suddenly trembled.

One of the enormous eyes closed.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The remaining eyes slowly moved toward the same point.

The black-haired woman whispered,

"They've found us."

Evetyl looked around.

"Found us?"

"Yes."

"Who are they?"

She looked at Evetyl.

"The beings who were waiting for the First Family to return."

---

The Curator stepped forward.

"Why would they care about us?"

The woman looked at him.

"Because your existence proves something."

"What?"

"That the First World failed."

The Curator's expression changed.

"Failed?"

"Yes."

She pointed toward Crosshaven.

"This city should never have existed."

The Curator looked around.

"But it does."

"Exactly."

She turned toward Evetyl.

"You created Crosshaven because you were trying to connect worlds that were never supposed to meet."

Evetyl frowned.

"I thought Crosshaven was meant to maintain balance."

"It was."

"Then why was it a failure?"

"Because balance was never the original plan."

"What was?"

The woman looked toward the sky.

"Separation."

She explained slowly.

"The original system was simple."

"One world."

"One history."

"One beginning."

"One ending."

"Nothing crossed between them."

"No timeline touched another."

"No memory escaped its own world."

"That was how existence was supposed to work."

The First Thought frowned.

"Then why create multiple worlds?"

"Because someone wanted to see what would happen."

The First Thing asked,

"Who?"

The woman looked at Evetyl.

"She did."

Evetyl stared.

"Again?"

The woman smiled sadly.

"You have always been curious."

Aren laughed quietly.

"That's an understatement."

Evetyl looked at him.

"You knew all this?"

"Some of it."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you forgot."

"I hate that answer."

"I know."

---

The woman walked toward the center of the plaza.

"My name is Elara."

Evetyl repeated it quietly.

"Elara."

The name triggered something.

A warm room.

Rain against a window.

Three children sitting around a table.

Aren was laughing.

Evetyl was holding a book.

And Elara...

She was trying to teach them something.

The memory disappeared before Evetyl could see more.

Elara noticed her expression.

"You remembered."

"Only a little."

"That's enough."

Evetyl looked at her.

"Tell me about our family."

Elara's expression softened.

"There were three of us."

"Aren."

"Me."

"And you."

Evetyl nodded.

"What about our parents?"

Elara's eyes became distant.

"They were part of the first creation."

"That's not an answer."

"It is."

"No."

Evetyl stepped closer.

"Are they alive?"

Elara hesitated.

Then answered:

"No."

Evetyl looked down.

"How did they die?"

"They didn't."

Evetyl looked up.

"What?"

"They were erased."

"By whom?"

Elara looked toward the young man.

Evetyl slowly turned.

The young man didn't move.

"By him?"

Elara nodded.

Aren stepped forward.

"Not exactly."

Elara looked at him.

"Don't defend him."

"I'm not."

Aren's voice became quiet.

"I'm explaining."

He looked at Evetyl.

"Our parents were part of the old world."

"The world before the First World."

"The world that was erased."

Evetyl felt a chill.

"They were erased when the beginning was created."

"Yes."

"Did they know?"

Aren nodded.

"They knew."

"Did they fight?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because they believed we would survive."

Evetyl's eyes filled with tears.

"They sacrificed themselves."

Aren nodded.

"Yes."

Silence followed.

Kai reached for Evetyl's hand.

She held it tightly.

---

The young man finally spoke.

"I didn't erase your parents."

Evetyl looked at him.

"Then who did?"

"The system."

"What system?"

"The original law of existence."

Evetyl frowned.

"That sounds convenient."

"It isn't."

He looked at the sky.

"Everything that exists must have a beginning."

"And everything with a beginning creates a boundary."

"When the First World was created..."

"The old world became impossible."

"It wasn't destroyed by a weapon."

"It was overwritten."

Evetyl stared.

"Then why do Aren and Elara exist?"

The young man answered:

"Because they refused to be overwritten."

Aren smiled bitterly.

"We were stubborn."

Elara laughed.

"We learned from her."

Evetyl smiled despite herself.

Then her smile faded.

"How did I survive?"

Aren answered.

"You didn't."

Evetyl froze.

"What?"

"You died too."

Kai looked at him.

Aren continued.

"All three of us died when the old world ended."

"Then how am I here?"

"Because you came back."

"How?"

Aren looked at Elara.

Elara answered.

"Memory."

---

The First Thought suddenly understood.

"The First Memory."

Elara nodded.

"You reconstructed yourself from what remained."

"But Aren and I..."

She looked toward her brother.

"...didn't have enough."

Aren continued.

"Evetyl remembered us."

"So we existed inside her."

Evetyl stared.

"Inside me?"

"Yes."

"That's why I kept seeing you."

"Yes."

"The memories weren't visions."

"They were us."

Evetyl looked at her hands.

She suddenly understood why Aren had appeared as a memory.

Why Elara felt familiar.

Why certain places felt like home.

They weren't memories of strangers.

They were memories of family.

---

Kai suddenly asked,

"Then why were Aren and Elara erased from Evetyl?"

Elara looked at the young man.

"Ask him."

Everyone turned.

The young man remained silent.

Evetyl's voice was quiet.

"Tell me."

He finally answered.

"Because you were dying."

Evetyl frowned.

"What?"

"Your body could survive."

"Your mind couldn't."

"You were carrying the memories of an entire world."

"Aren."

"Elara."

"Your parents."

"Everyone."

"You couldn't separate your own identity from theirs."

Evetyl remembered.

The endless voices.

The thousands of faces.

The pain.

The deaths.

The loneliness.

She whispered,

"I was becoming them."

"Yes."

The young man nodded.

"You couldn't tell where you ended."

"And they began."

"So I separated you."

"You erased them."

"I sealed them."

"There's a difference."

Evetyl looked at Aren.

Aren nodded.

"He didn't kill us."

"He hid us."

"Inside you."

Evetyl stared at the young man.

"Why?"

"Because if you remembered us..."

"...you would remember the old world."

"And if I remembered that?"

"You would try to bring it back."

Evetyl's expression became serious.

"And that would destroy everything."

"Yes."

---

The King of Oblivion suddenly spoke.

"That was the correct decision."

Everyone looked upward.

The golden eye had become enormous.

Evetyl looked at it.

"You knew?"

"I knew."

"Then why did you let me remember?"

"Because the conditions have changed."

"What changed?"

The King answered:

"The old world has returned."

Evetyl's blood ran cold.

"Where?"

The King looked toward the horizon.

"Here."

The ground shook.

The peaceful valley began changing.

Mountains appeared where there had been fields.

Ancient buildings rose from beneath the earth.

A river changed direction.

Ruins emerged from the grass.

Then...

The sky turned gray.

A city appeared in the distance.

A city Evetyl recognized.

Her childhood home.

The house.

The street.

The old tree.

Everything.

Evetyl couldn't breathe.

"It's real."

Aren looked toward the city.

"No."

Elara whispered,

"It's a memory."

The First Thought shook its head.

"No."

Everyone turned.

The First Thought's book was glowing.

"This isn't a memory."

"What is it?" Noah asked.

The First Thought stared at the city.

"It's an independent reality."

The Curator's expression changed.

"That means..."

"The old world wasn't erased."

The First Thought's voice trembled.

"It was hidden."

---

The young man suddenly stepped backward.

Aren turned toward him.

"You knew."

He didn't answer.

Aren grabbed his coat.

"You knew!"

The young man pushed his hand away.

"I suspected."

"You lied."

"I protected her."

"You lied to all of us!"

Elara stepped between them.

"Stop."

Aren looked at her.

"How can you defend him?"

"I'm not."

Elara looked at the young man.

"I'm asking the same question."

The young man looked toward the city.

"I didn't know where it was."

"Then how did it return?"

He pointed toward Evetyl.

"She remembered."

Evetyl stared at the city.

"So my memories rebuilt it."

"No."

He shook his head.

"Your memories opened the door."

Aren looked at the city.

"Then something was waiting behind it."

The young man nodded.

"Yes."

---

The ground suddenly split.

A massive black root emerged from beneath the valley.

Then another.

Then another.

They wrapped around the ancient city.

The King of Oblivion's eye narrowed.

"Something is wrong."

The First Thought stared at its book.

The pages were filling with words.

"That's impossible."

The Eye moved closer.

"What?"

The First Thought read aloud.

"Origin..."

"Unknown."

"Age..."

"Unknown."

"Classification..."

"Unknown."

It looked up.

"There's no record."

The First Thing asked,

"Then what is it?"

The First Thought slowly turned the page.

A single sentence appeared.

THE WORLD THAT EXISTED BEFORE MEMORY.

Everyone became silent.

Evetyl whispered,

"Before memory?"

Elara's face became pale.

Aren looked at her.

"You know something."

Elara nodded.

"I do."

"What?"

She stared at the ancient city.

"When we were children..."

"We were told the old world was the beginning."

"But it wasn't."

Evetyl waited.

Elara's voice became quiet.

"There was something before it."

The young man closed his eyes.

"Elara..."

She ignored him.

"The world before the old world."

"The place where the first beings came from."

"The place where memory itself was created."

Evetyl looked toward the black roots.

"What happened to it?"

Elara answered:

"It was never destroyed."

"It was sealed."

"Where?"

She looked directly at Evetyl.

"Inside the First World."

Evetyl's heart sank.

"And now?"

Elara whispered,

"Now you've opened it."

---

The ancient city suddenly went silent.

Every door opened at once.

Every window lit up.

Thousands of figures appeared in the streets.

They looked human.

But none had faces.

They all turned toward Evetyl.

Then they began walking.

Slowly.

Silently.

Toward her.

Kai stepped forward.

"Everyone stay behind me."

Evetyl grabbed his arm.

"No."

He looked at her.

"They're not attacking."

"How do you know?"

"Because..."

She stared at the faceless figures.

"...they're crying."

Kai looked carefully.

He was right.

The figures had no mouths.

Yet tears were falling from their empty faces.

The first figure reached them.

It stopped in front of Evetyl.

Then knelt.

The others followed.

One by one...

Thousands of faceless beings knelt before her.

Aren stared.

Elara covered her mouth.

The young man looked terrified.

Evetyl whispered,

"Why are they kneeling?"

Nobody answered.

Then the first figure raised its head.

A voice came from it.

Not male.

Not female.

Not old.

Not young.

A voice that sounded like an entire world speaking at once.

"Our creator has returned."

Evetyl froze.

Kai looked at her.

"Evetyl..."

The figure continued.

"The one who made us..."

The sky turned completely dark.

"...has finally remembered her name."

Evetyl's heart began pounding.

The figure slowly stood.

Then it spoke the final words.

"Welcome home, First Memory."

Behind the ancient city...

Something enormous opened its eyes.

Not thousands.

Not millions.

Only two.

And Evetyl realized with horror that the golden eyes in the sky had never been watching her.

They had been watching what was beneath the city.

The First Thought looked at the opening ground.

Its voice shook.

"Everyone..."

"Run."

The earth split apart.

Something ancient began rising from beneath the First World.

And before it completely emerged, Evetyl heard a voice inside her mind.

A voice she had never heard before.

Yet somehow...

She knew it.

"Daughter..."

Evetyl froze.

The voice continued.

"Why did you leave me?"
