Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: “I Believe You”

The night refused to breathe.

Riyana could still hear it, the sound of impact, echoing in her skull like it had no intention of ever leaving. Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she stumbled back from where Alex lay, unmoving, her mind refusing to process what her eyes were seeing.

"I didn't…" she whispered, shaking her head, tears blurring everything. "I didn't mean to…"

Footsteps.

Closer now.

Not distant.

Not imagined.

Real.

Riyana's head snapped up, panic flooding her veins. For a second, she thought—this is it. Someone would see. Someone would decide. Someone would take this moment out of her hands forever.

And then,

"Riyana?"

That voice.

Her breath hitched.

Bosco.

He was standing a few feet away, having just stepped into the dim spill of the parking lights. His gaze moved quickly—from her tear-streaked face, to her shaking hands… and then to Alex.

On the ground.

Still.

Something in Bosco's expression changed.

Not confusion.

Not immediate anger.

Just… sharp awareness.

"Riyana," he said again, quieter this time, stepping closer. "What happened?"

That was all it took.

The control she had been barely holding onto shattered.

"I didn't kill him," she blurted out, her voice breaking completely. "I didn't...Bosco, I didn't mean to, he....he just.."

Her words collapsed into each other, breath uneven, panic spilling out faster than she could manage.

Bosco didn't interrupt.

He reached her, steady, grounded in a way that felt almost unreal compared to the chaos inside her.

"Hey," he said softly. "Look at me."

She couldn't.

"I didn't, he tried to.." her voice shook violently. "He wouldn't let me go, and I told him to stop, I told him so many times and he didn't listen and I just.... I pushed him."

Her hands came up to her head, fingers clutching her hair as if she could hold herself together physically.

"And he fell," she whispered, horror filling every word. "He just fell, Bosco… I didn't know, I didn't think."

Silence.

Not empty.

Heavy.

Bosco exhaled slowly, his eyes flickering once more toward Alex, assessing the situation in a single, sharp glance. Then his attention returned fully to her.

He stepped closer.

Close enough that she could feel his presence anchor her.

"Riyana," he said, firm but calm. "Look at me."

This time, she did.

Her eyes were wide, terrified, searching his face for something, anything, that could tell her what this meant now.

"I didn't mean to," she said again, almost pleading. "I was just trying to get away. He wouldn't stop… he tried to..."

Her voice broke again, the implication hanging unspoken but clear.

Something dark flickered in Bosco's eyes.

Anger.

But not at her.

Never at her.

He took a slow breath, steadying himself before speaking.

"I know," he said.

She blinked.

"I believe you."

The words landed gently.

But they held weight.

Real weight.

Riyana stared at him, like she hadn't heard correctly. "What…?"

"I believe you," he repeated, unwavering.

"No, you don't understand, he's....he's not moving, I think he's....". Her voice cracked again as she shook her head desperately. "This is my fault."

"It's not."

Her breath stilled.

Bosco's gaze didn't waver. "You were defending yourself."

"I pushed him"

"Because he didn't stop."

"I could've....I should've...."

"You did what you had to do."

His voice wasn't loud.

But it cut through the noise in her head like nothing else could.

Tears streamed down her face as she shook her head again, struggling to accept it. "What if… what if he's..."

Bosco didn't let her finish.

"We'll deal with that," he said calmly. "Right now, you need to breathe."

"I can't..."

"You can."

He stepped even closer, his hands gently but firmly holding her shoulders—not restraining, not forcing, just grounding.

"Breathe with me."

She tried.

Failed.

Tried again.

His voice stayed steady. "In… and out."

Slowly, unevenly, her breaths began to follow his rhythm.

The world stopped spinning as violently.

Just a little.

"I'm here," he added quietly. "You're not alone in this."

That broke something in her again, but this time, it wasn't panic.

It was relief.

Fragile.

Shaky.

But real.

Her hands clutched at his shirt, like she needed physical proof that he was actually there.

"Bosco…" she whispered.

"I've got you."

Behind him, the stillness of the night remained unchanged.

But between them

Something shifted.

Not just comfort.

Not just closeness.

Trust.

The kind that doesn't question.

Doesn't hesitate.

Doesn't leave.

After a moment, Bosco glanced once more toward Alex, his expression tightening briefly, calculating, controlled.

Then he looked back at her.

"Listen to me carefully," he said, his tone more serious now. "You didn't attack him. You didn't plan this. He crossed a line, and you reacted."

Riyana nodded weakly, though fear still lingered in her eyes.

"We're going to handle this properly," he continued. "No running. No hiding."

Her grip on him tightened slightly.

"I'm scared…"

"I know," he said softly. "But I'm right here."

Another pause.

Then, quieter,

"And I'm not going anywhere."

That promise settled into her like something solid.

Something she could hold onto when everything else felt like it was slipping.

For the first time since it happened, her breathing steadied.

Not completely.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

Enough to stand.

Enough to face what came next.

Because now,

She wasn't facing it alone.
