Chapter 39 - Chapter 39: “What They Thought They Saw”

The night hadn't ended.

It had only… shifted.

The flashing lights arrived before the silence could settle.

Red and blue streaks cut through the darkness of the parking lot, painting everything in harsh, flickering colors. The stillness from earlier was gone, replaced by murmurs, footsteps, radioes crackling.

Riyana stood beside Bosco, her fingers gripping his sleeve like it was the only thing holding her upright.

"I'm right here," he said quietly, not looking at her but fully aware of every tremor in her hand.

She nodded faintly.

Two officers moved around Alex's body, one crouching, the other speaking into his radio. Another approached them.

"Who called this in?"

"I did," Bosco replied, calm, composed.

The officer nodded, his eyes shifting to Riyana. "Ma'am, we're going to need a statement."

Riyana's throat went dry instantly.

Bosco's voice came before her panic could rise. "She's in shock. Give her a moment."

The officer studied her for a second, then gave a small nod. "Alright. But we'll need to understand what happened here."

Understand.

If only it were that simple.

Across the parking lot,

Someone else was watching.

Standing near the shadowed edge of the building, partially hidden behind a pillar.

He hadn't meant to stay this long.

At first, he'd just been heading back to grab something he forgot. That's all.

But then he saw them.

Riyana and Alex.

Arguing.

Voices raised.

Tension thick.

He hadn't heard everything, but he had seen enough to know it wasn't a normal conversation.

And then,

That moment.

That one second was now replayed in his mind on a loop.

Riyana's hands were pushing forward.

Alex was losing balance.

Falling.

Hitting the ground.

Hard.

The rest?

Blurred.

Unclear.

But that part,

That part was crystal.

His breathing quickened as he watched the police now surrounding the scene.

Did she just…?

His mind filled in the gaps.

Filled them incorrectly.

He didn't see the struggle before.

Didn't see the fear.

Didn't see Alex grabbing her.

Didn't see what led to that push.

All he saw,

Was the end.

And sometimes…

That's all it takes.

"Riyana."

Bosco's voice pulled her back.

"Hmm?" she whispered, barely audible.

"They're going to ask you what happened," he said gently. "Just tell the truth. Nothing else."

Her eyes flickered with fear. "What if… it doesn't sound right?"

He turned to her then, his gaze steady.

"It will."

"But what if they don't believe me?"

His jaw tightened slightly, but his voice remained calm. "Then I'll make sure they do."

She searched his face, looking for doubt.

She found none.

"Ma'am?"

The officer had returned.

"Are you ready to speak now?"

Riyana swallowed hard.

Bosco gave her a small, reassuring nod.

"I… I'll try," she said.

The officer took out his notebook. "Start from the beginning."

Her hands trembled as she clasped them together.

"He… followed me," she began, her voice shaky. "We started arguing. I told him to leave me alone but he didn't....he grabbed me"

Her words came in fragments, uneven, but honest.

Bosco stayed beside her, silent, present.

Watching.

Listening.

From across the lot, the witness shifted uncomfortably.

That's not what it looked like…

He frowned, confusion creeping in.

Because what she was saying…

Didn't match what he thought he saw.

Or maybe,

He hadn't seen enough.

But doubt is a strange thing.

Once it settles in, it doesn't leave quietly.

He pulled out his phone, hesitating for a moment before opening the camera roll.

There it was.

A short clip.

Shaky.

Unfocused.

But visible enough.

The push.

The fall.

Nothing before it.

Nothing after.

Just that one moment.

Out of context.

Dangerously incomplete.

His thumb hovered over the screen.

Should he show it?

Should he say something?

His gaze lifted toward the officers… then toward Riyana.

She looked… broken.

Not like someone who,

He exhaled sharply, conflicted.

"I didn't mean to…" her voice carried faintly across the distance.

The words lingered.

But so did the image in his phone.

And in that moment,

He made a decision.

"I saw something."

The voice cut through everything.

Riyana's heart stopped.

Bosco's eyes sharpened instantly.

The officer turned. "You did?"

The man stepped forward slowly, holding up his phone.

"I was here earlier," he said, his tone uncertain but firm enough. "I didn't see everything… but I saw part of it."

Riyana's grip on Bosco tightened instinctively.

Bosco didn't move.

Didn't react.

But something in his posture changed, subtle, alert.

"What did you see?" the officer asked.

The man hesitated… just for a second.

Then,

"She pushed him."

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

Riyana's breath hitched, panic surging all over again.

"No..." she whispered. "That's not..."

"I didn't see before that," the man added quickly. "But… I saw her push him. And he fell."

The officer's expression shifted, attention sharpening.

"Do you have any recording?"

A pause.

Then the phone was handed over.

"Yes."

Bosco's jaw tightened slightly.

Riyana felt the ground slip beneath her feet again.

Because suddenly,

The truth wasn't enough anymore.

Now…

It was about what could be proven.

And what could be misunderstood.
