Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Dungeon

The second week of school introduced the "Simulated Dungeon Battles." In the old days, these were bloodbaths. Now, they were "Resonance Trials" held in a massive chamber beneath the World-Tree. The goal was to reach the center of a maze by syncing your thoughts with your pet to solve puzzles.

"Team 7: Ren, Zane, and Elara. You're up," Professor Marcus announced.

The three students entered the "Iron-Rose Maze." Zane immediately tried to take command. "Alright, my Chrome-Hound can't use its lasers, but its nose is still Grade-A. We follow him."

"Wait," Elara said, her eyes glowing with a faint blue light—the mark of the Star-Sect. "The walls are moving. It's a Fractal Maze. If we just follow a scent, we'll end up in a loop. We need to find the 'Anchor-Point'."

Ren looked at Pip. The newt wasn't looking at the walls; it was looking at the floor. It began to tap its tail on the ground in a specific rhythm.

"What is he doing?" Zane sneered. "Playing drums while we fail?"

"He's listening to the roots," Ren realized. He knelt and placed his ear to the moss.

Through the Silver Pulse, Ren could "see" the maze from below. The maze wasn't made of stone; it was made of Solidified Intent. Every time Zane felt frustrated, a new wall appeared. Every time Elara felt anxious, the path narrowed.

"Zane, stop thinking about winning!" Ren shouted. "You're making the maze harder! You have to let go of the 'Ranks'."

"Easy for you to say, 'Trash-Tamer'!" Zane snapped.

Suddenly, the simulation glitched. The green moss turned grey. The walls didn't just move; they began to "De-pixelate," turning into sharp, jagged edges of static. The "Safety Protocols" of the Academy turned red.

"This isn't part of the trial," Elara whispered, her Cloud-Cat arching its back.

From the center of the maze, a Glitch-Wraith appeared—a creature made of distorted data and broken code. It looked like a twisted version of the old ATC extraction drones. It lunged at Zane, its "Erasure-Claw" inches from his face.

"Pip! Thermal Overload!" Ren didn't think; he just felt.

He poured his own heat into the newt. Pip didn't breathe fire, but its body suddenly glowed with the intensity of a small star. The heat was so pure, so "Analog," that it acted as a firewall. The Glitch-Wraith shrieked as its digital form melted under the raw, physical warmth of the bond.

The simulation crashed, and the students were dumped back onto the training floor. Professor Marcus and Samuel were already there, their faces grim.

"It's happening again," Marcus muttered to Samuel.

"What is?" Ren asked, his gold eye still glowing. "What was that thing?"

Samuel looked at Ren, then at the little newt. "It's a Data-Leak, Ren. When your Uncle Leo merged with the world, he didn't just upload the good parts. He had to absorb the 'Trash Data' of the old system too. We thought it was buried in the core... but it seems the new generation is digging it up."

Ren looked at Pip. The newt looked exhausted, its scales dim. Ren realized then that the "Tournament" everyone was talking about wasn't just going to be a school event. It was going to be a battle to see if the Fused World could survive its own memories.

"Get some rest, Ren," Samuel said, placing a heavy hand on the boy's shoulder. "The next lesson... is how to fight something that doesn't exist."
