Chapter 4: The Resonance Tournament

The "Resonance Tournament" was announced via a planet-wide broadcast that didn't use screens. Instead, the Silver Pulse vibrated the air into a melodic invitation. To the public, it was a celebration of ten years of peace—a chance for the new generation to show off their bonds in the Grand Coliseum of the World-Tree. But to the faculty, it was a honey-trap.

"We need to draw the 'Glitches' out," Samuel explained to the staff in a closed-door meeting. "Every time a tamer pushes their resonance to the limit, the 'Trash Data' from the old system tries to latch onto the signal. If we host a tournament, the corruption will show its face."

Ren Heart sat on the edge of the training fountain, watching his classmates prepare. The atmosphere at the Academy had shifted from academic curiosity to a feverish, almost aggressive competitiveness.

"Ren, are you even practicing?" Mina asked, her Cloud-Leopard prowling in a circle, its fur crackling with localized lightning. "The first round is 'Elemental Synchronization'. How is a newt going to sync with anything other than a warm rock?"

"Pip is plenty fast," Ren replied, though his heart wasn't in it. He was looking at Zane, who was standing at the far end of the field.

Zane wasn't practicing with his Chrome-Hound. He was staring at a small, triangular device hidden in his palm. Every time he pressed a button, the hound's eyes flashed with a jagged, red light—a color that didn't exist in the natural spectrum of the Silver Pulse.

"Zane's different," Ren whispered to Pip.

The little newt chirped, its scales turning a cold, metallic blue. It was sensing "Artificial Resonance."

The tournament began under the gaze of the twin suns. The first round was held in a "Dynamic Arena" that changed its terrain based on the contestants' moods. When Mina stepped onto the sands, the arena became a series of floating pillars and storm clouds. She and her leopard moved like a single bolt of lightning, effortlessly leaping through the air. The crowd—made up of humans and free pets from across the Fused World—roared in approval.

Then it was Ren's turn. His opponent was a boy from the Star-Sect named Kaelen, who commanded a Lunar-Owl.

"Begin!" the referee shouted.

The arena shifted into a dense, misty forest. The Lunar-Owl vanished into the fog, its "Invisibility" skill powered by the silver moonlight. Ren stood still, Pip resting on his head.

"I can't see him, Pip," Ren whispered.

He closed his eyes and tried to ignore the "Visual Data." He reached out with the Sovereign's Link, searching for the owl's heartbeat. But instead of a heartbeat, he felt a "Static-Burst."

SCREECH!

The owl lunged out of the mist, but it didn't look like a bird. Its wings were trailing trails of black pixels, and its eyes were hollowed out. It wasn't Kaelen's owl anymore; it had been "Hijacked" by a nearby signal.

"Ren, move!" Natasha screamed from the balcony.

Ren didn't dodge. He grabbed Pip and held him toward the owl. "Pip... Pure Resonance!"

The newt didn't use heat this time. It emitted a high-frequency hum that matched the "White Noise" of the Silver Pulse. The sound acted like a de-fragging program. The black pixels on the owl's wings shattered, and the bird tumbled to the ground, unconscious but restored to its natural form.

The crowd went silent. The victory was Ren's, but the "Glitch" had been visible to everyone.

"The tournament isn't about skill," Ren realized as he looked at the VIP box, where a group of mysterious men in grey suits—the "New Directors"—were taking notes. "It's a stress test. They're looking for the strongest bonds so they can 'Harvest' the data again."
