Chapter 13 - V1 Ch11- The Relapse...

Chapter 11 – The Relapse

Cole's POV – Racing Against Time

Her body was limp in my arms, and my chest was tight, adrenaline and panic mixed with fear that I could barely breathe. The park, the laughter, the sunlight… all gone. Only this—Care, fragile and fading, in my arms.

"Stay with me, Care," I whispered, voice shaking. "Don't you dare… I need you. Just hold on."

I practically ran to my car, lifting her carefully into the passenger seat. My hands trembled as I buckled her in. I gripped the steering wheel so tight it was almost painful, pressing the accelerator.

The streets blurred past. I didn't care about the red lights, about pedestrians, about anything. I only cared about getting her to the hospital.

"Hold on, Care," I muttered, staring straight ahead, jaw tight. "I'm right here. Just breathe. Don't… don't leave me now."

Her hair fell across her face, and I brushed it back gently, murmuring her name over and over. "You've survived everything. You can survive this too."

Minutes stretched into eternities. My heart raced faster than the car. Every moment felt like an impossible wait.

Hospital Arrival

I skidded into the hospital parking lot, ignoring everything but her. I ran inside with her in my arms, shouting, "Emergency! Brain tumor patient—critical!"

Doctors rushed toward us. They guided me, but I barely registered their instructions, my eyes locked on her pale face.

"Nova! Ash! Lyra! Ben! Daisy! Get here—NOW!" I shouted into my phone, voice shaking.

Lyra's POV – The Call

I was sitting quietly beside Nova, Ash, Ben, and Daisy, reviewing notes for exams, when my phone vibrated violently.

It was Cole.

"Care… something's wrong," the voice cracked through the speaker. "She's… she's fainted. I'm at the hospital. Come now!"

My chest seized. My hands trembled. I could barely speak. "We… we have to go. Now."

Nova grabbed her bag, Ash and I following. Ben and Daisy were already running toward the car, eyes wide with fear. The air felt heavy, like it had been waiting for this moment all along.

Arriving at the Hospital

We arrived in minutes, though it felt like hours. Cole met us outside the ER doors, carrying Care carefully, his face pale and tense.

"She… she passed out. I don't know if—" His voice cracked. He barely noticed us, focused entirely on getting her safely to the doctors.

I followed closely, clutching Nova's hand tightly. Ash and Daisy flanked me, Ben silently walking beside us, jaw tight with worry.

When the doctors took Care from Cole's arms, the reality hit me. Her small, fragile frame… pale, limp, barely breathing. My heart froze.

"She's stable for now," one of the doctors said briskly, but I barely heard the words.

Cole slumped against the wall for a moment, closing his eyes, hands still trembling from holding her. I could see the tension in him, the silent terror that he couldn't speak of.

The Doctor's Revelation

Minutes later, we were ushered into a small waiting room. The doctors came in—new faces this time, more specialized. One stepped forward, looking grave.

"I'm Dr. Sharma," he began carefully. "We ran scans immediately. Care's tumor… it has relapsed. It has worsened significantly."

The room fell silent. My hands flew to my mouth.

Dr. Sharma continued. "The tumor's growth has affected her neurological functions. She's stable now, but tomorrow morning, she will need surgery. The chances are risky. We want you all to prepare for that."

The words hit like a thunderbolt.

Lyra's POV – Shock and Panic

I felt my knees go weak. "No… no, it can't be… she just recovered… she just came back to normal…" My voice cracked. Tears spilled down my face.

Nova gripped my hand tightly, trying to ground me. "Lyra… we need to stay strong. For her."

But my chest hurt so badly, I could barely breathe. I had seen her fragile, sick, and now… relapse? How could it be possible?

I swallowed hard, trying to hold it together. "She… she fought so hard… why… why now?"

Nova's POV – Silent Anguish

Sitting beside Lyra, I held her hand tightly, but inside, my heart was screaming. Care had survived so much… how could this happen again?

I wanted to run to her, to hold her, to tell her it would be okay—but she was in the hands of doctors now. I had to stay calm, for everyone else, for her.

Cole looked broken. Ben and Daisy were silent, eyes wide with fear. Ash was clutching her bag, trembling. And I… I felt the weight of everything crash down on me.

I whispered under my breath, "Please… let her survive this. She's already fought so much. Please… please…"

Ash's POV – Anguish

I couldn't stop pacing. I wanted to scream, to throw something, to do anything. My eyes kept flicking to the door where they had taken her.

"She's… she's awake, right?" I choked out, voice tight.

Nova shook her head slowly. "Not yet. The doctors are preparing for surgery. It's… serious."

I sank into a chair, hands trembling. "I can't… I can't lose her again. Not after everything. She's been through too much…"

Ben and Daisy's POV – Silent Pain

Ben leaned against the wall, jaw tight, eyes unfocused. He never spoke much, but the tension radiating off him was raw. His little sister instinct kicked in automatically—Care was like that to him now. He had to protect her, but all he could do was wait.

Daisy's hands were clasped together tightly. "She's… she's strong," she whispered, though her voice trembled. "She survived everything… she'll… she'll fight again. She has to."

Cole's POV – Total Desperation

I sat slumped against the wall, staring at the door. My fists clenched. My chest ached like someone was squeezing it from the inside. I could still feel her hair brushing against my face as I ran to the car.

"She was laughing… just a minute ago," I muttered under my breath. "She was alive… happy… smiling… and now… this?"

I didn't notice my knees shaking. I didn't notice my hands trembling until I pressed them against my face. I had to stay strong. For her. For all of them.

"She can't leave me," I whispered fiercely. "Not after everything. Not now. You hear me? She's not leaving. I won't let her."

Lyra's POV – Holding Back

I gripped Nova's hand tighter. "We have to stay calm… she needs us calm. She can feel us, even unconscious. We can't break down. We need to be strong… for her."

But inside, my heart was screaming. I wanted to rush to her bed, to hold her hand, to tell her everything would be okay. But I couldn't. I had to wait. And the waiting… it was torture.

Nova's POV – Silent Vigil

I closed my eyes, thinking of every moment Care had smiled, laughed, survived. The hospital room, the machines, the doctors… all of it blurred into a single thought: Care is strong. She survives. She fights. She can do this.

But the tears fell anyway. Quiet, desperate, for the girl who had given so much to everyone else, who had smiled through pain and fear… and now needed us more than ever.

Waiting Room Breakdown

Hours passed, though it felt like minutes. Every sound of a doctor walking down the hallway made us tense. Every beep of the machines somewhere beyond the doors felt like a countdown.

I looked around. Cole was still slumped against the wall, hands gripping his knees, jaw tight. Ben and Daisy were silent, Daisy clutching a tissue. Lyra was holding Nova's hand. Ash was rocking slightly, unable to sit still.

All six of us were united in fear, helplessness, and love.

We couldn't see her. We couldn't touch her. But we could feel her. We could fight with her in spirit.

And I knew, deep down, that none of us were leaving her side, no matter what happened next.
