Chapter 10 – Laughter Before the Storm

Care's POV – Walking in the Park

The park was bathed in the warm glow of late afternoon, leaves rustling gently as a cool breeze brushed against my face. I couldn't remember the last time I had felt this… free.

Cole walked beside me, calm and steady, hand occasionally brushing against mine, and I could feel the warmth of his presence without even looking.

"I can't believe we're actually here," I whispered, my voice soft. "I mean… after everything, being able to just… walk… talk… laugh…"

Cole glanced at me, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "I know. It's been a long road. But look at you. You're walking, laughing, alive… and nothing can take that away."

I took a deep breath, letting it fill my chest. "You know… I didn't realize how much I had missed just… being around people. Feeling like I belonged. After the hospital… after the treatment… I felt so small, so… invisible sometimes."

Cole's hand brushed mine again, firmer this time. "You were never invisible to me, Care. You've always been… important. More than you know."

I felt my throat tighten. "It's hard… you know? Surviving everything, coming back to normal life… and realizing how much everyone cared all along. Ash, Nova, Lyra… Ben… Daisy… even you. I… I'm grateful for every single moment. Every single word of support, every laugh, every little gesture. It's… overwhelming sometimes."

Cole slowed his pace, looking at me with gentle intensity. "You deserve that, Care. You deserve every bit of love and care. You fought through pain that no one should ever face… and now, you get to experience happiness fully."

I nodded, eyes watering slightly. "It's just… I've always been the 'strong one,' you know? The invincible, untouchable… Care. But being strong doesn't mean I don't need them. And… I realized I do. I need all of them. And I need… you."

Cole's lips curved into a smile, and he brushed my hair back. "Good. Because you've got all of us. Always."

I laughed softly, feeling my heart lift. "And here I thought I had to carry everything alone. I was wrong."

Cole chuckled low, his voice warm. "You don't have to ever again. That's my job, now."

I nudged him playfully. "You sure you can handle that? I'm… kind of a lot sometimes."

He laughed, a deep, comforting sound that made me feel safe. "I've waited long enough to find out. Bring it on."

Talking About Friends

We walked along the winding paths, leaves crunching under our feet. The park smelled of fresh grass and late blooms. I glanced at him, heart swelling with gratitude.

"You know," I said, "I've never thanked everyone properly. Ash, Nova, Lyra… even Ben and Daisy. They've all been there, in their own ways. They didn't just care—they fought for me. Made sure I wasn't alone when I felt like disappearing."

Cole nodded, eyes soft. "You fought too, Care. You didn't give up when it would've been easier to just… let go. You're the strongest person I know. And the people around you… they're lucky to have you, just as much as you're lucky to have them."

I smiled faintly. "I think… I finally realize that. After three months of treatment, hospitals, injections, sleepless nights… I feel alive again. I can laugh again. I can feel normal again. And… I want to live like this, surrounded by them, by you, by friends, by love."

Cole reached for my hand and held it. "Then do it. Live fully, Care. That's all I want for you. No regrets. No holding back."

I squeezed his hand, letting the warmth seep in. "I will. I promise. I want to treasure every moment. Every laugh. Every small thing. Because… life… it's fragile. And I've learned that the hard way."

He smiled softly, brushing his thumb against mine. "You're right. But you're here now. And we're going to make every moment count. Together."

I laughed lightly, a genuine, bubbling sound that made my chest ache with relief and joy. "Together."

We fell into a comfortable silence for a few minutes, walking side by side, letting the wind carry away old fears.

Gratitude

"You know," I said quietly, my voice catching a little, "I don't say this enough. But… thank you. For waiting for me. For staying. For never giving up on me. Even when I wanted to hide, even when I thought I didn't deserve… any of it. Thank you for being patient with me."

Cole's eyes softened. "Care… you don't have to thank me. It was never about waiting. I stayed because it was never a question. You're worth everything. Every worry, every sleepless night… everything."

My throat tightened, and I took a deep breath. "I hope… I can be that for someone else someday. You know? Supportive, loving… steady. Because… I've seen what it feels like to be cared for. And it's… everything."

Cole's gaze lingered on me, his voice quiet but firm. "You already are, Care. You've always been… for all of us. And now… I get to be there for you. For real."

I smiled, tears prickling at the corners of my eyes. "I'm… grateful. For all of you. For this. For life. For today."

He nodded, squeezing my hand. "Then let's make today count. Every second."

Laughter and Light Moments

We walked past the small fountain, and I twirled slightly, letting the breeze catch my hair. "I feel like… like I'm really alive again," I said.

Cole chuckled. "You're glowing, Care. Like you always do, but… brighter. Happier."

I laughed, leaning slightly on him as we walked. "I think… this is the first time in months I can just… be. No treatments, no hospitals, no exams… just me. And you."

He smiled softly, brushing my hair back again. "I like this version of you. Full of laughter, alive, unstoppable."

I laughed lightly again. "Stop complimenting me. You'll make me blush."

Cole just laughed along, the sound steady, comforting, warm.

The Sudden Collapse

We were walking along a quiet path, talking about Ash, Lyra, Ben, Daisy… sharing stories from school, funny anecdotes from nights at Ash's house, and even teasing one another about study habits.

I was laughing at one of his jokes, letting my head fall back slightly in the sunlit glow… when suddenly, the world tilted. My stomach churned, my vision blurred, and my legs wobbled.

I tried to take a step… then another… and the next thing I knew, my knees buckled.

"Care!" Cole shouted, his hand shooting out instinctively.

I felt his arms catch me just before I hit the ground. My vision was a whirl of sunlight, leaves, and panic… and then everything went black.

Cole's POV – Horror and Panic

The laughter that had just filled the air was gone.

One second she was alive, glowing, smiling… and the next, her body was limp in my arms.

"Care!" I yelled, panic surging. My chest tightened, adrenaline sharp in every vein. I shook her gently. "Stay with me! Don't you dare pass out now!"

Her body was surprisingly light, but my heart felt like it was being crushed. She had survived so much… months of treatments, pain, everything… and here she was, fainting now, in my arms.

I looked around desperately. People were walking in the distance, but this was our moment, and I couldn't wait. I had to get her help. Now.

"Hold on, Care," I muttered fiercely, voice breaking. "I'm taking you. No ambulance. We're going. Just stay with me. Please."

Tears prickled my eyes as I lifted her carefully into my arms, holding her close. I could feel her heartbeat—weak, but present. I could feel her breath, shallow and faltering.

My jaw tightened. I didn't care about speed limits or honking cars. I just had to get her to a hospital, fast.

And as the park faded behind us, the last thing I remembered before sprinting toward the car was her laughter… just moments ago. Alive, vibrant, radiant.

And now, it felt wrong.
