Chapter 16 - V1 Ch14- The Surgery...

Chapter 13 – The Surgery

Last Goodbye – Care & Cole

The hospital room felt impossibly quiet. Machines hummed softly, lights flickered faintly. I could feel the weight of tomorrow—or rather, today. The surgery was minutes away.

Cole stood beside me, his fingers holding mine like he'd never let go. My chest tightened. "Cole…" I whispered, voice trembling, "I… I don't want to leave like this. Not without…"

He cut me off with a single, fast, desperate kiss. A kiss that was all emotion: fear, love, hope, regret. It was quick, but it held a lifetime of unspoken words.

"I'm not letting go," he whispered, pressing his forehead to mine. His breath was uneven, voice breaking. "I swear… survive. Just… survive, Care."

I nodded faintly, swallowing back my fear. "I'll… I'll try."

The doors opened. The nurses were ready. Time to go.

Author's POV – Inside the OR

The operating room was stark and sterile. Machines beeped in a rhythm that seemed almost cruel in its steadiness. The surgical team moved quickly, voices clipped and precise.

"Vitals are unstable," the anesthesiologist murmured. "BP dropping. Heart rate erratic."

The lead surgeon, a tall man with calm eyes, nodded. "We've prepped. Start sedation slowly. Keep monitoring. I want everything documented."

Care lay on the table, fragile as porcelain, her chest rising and falling unevenly. Tubes, wires, and monitors were her lifeline, the only things holding her to the world she had loved so much.

"Scalpel," the surgeon commanded. The team moved with synchrony, but the tension was palpable.

Her blood pressure dipped again. The anesthesiologist's voice tightened. "She's slipping. We need to stabilize, now."

A nurse moved swiftly, injecting medications, adjusting the oxygen mask. Another nurse held her hand, whispering reassurances that she couldn't hear.

Time stretched. Every second was unbearable. The OR felt endless, like a suspended heartbeat between hope and fear.

Waiting Room – Cole's POV

I couldn't sit. My hands were clenched tightly into fists. The floor seemed to shake beneath me with every beep of the monitors I imagined.

"She's going to make it," I muttered to myself. "She has to."

But my throat was tight. My fingers trembled. I couldn't imagine a world without her.

I paced. I stopped. I stared at the OR door, willing the minutes to pass faster, willing the surgeons to succeed.

And then a nurse came out, brisk steps. She glanced at us—at me, at Ash, Lyra, Ben, Daisy, Nova. But she said nothing. Just a curt nod. And I panicked.

"She's stable?" I asked before anyone could.

The nurse shook her head slightly and disappeared back inside.

I sank into the chair, chest heaving. "Come on… you have to survive…"

Waiting Room – Ash's POV

I gripped the edge of the chair like it was the only thing keeping me tethered to the floor. My hands were trembling so hard I thought they'd break.

She was lying there, fighting. Alone, in that OR. The thought of her—my soul sister—slipping away was unbearable.

Every time a door opened, I jumped. Every step in the hallway made my chest tighten.

"I should be there," I whispered, voice breaking. "I should be holding her hand, telling her… she's stronger than this…"

I felt Lyra's hand on my shoulder. She squeezed it, murmuring something. I barely registered. My mind was with her, in that OR, each second a knife twisting in my chest.

Waiting Room – Lyra's POV

I couldn't stop my hands from shaking. Care had been my anchor for so long. And now… now she was so small, so fragile on that operating table.

I tried to speak, tried to reassure the others, but my voice failed me. Every nurse that came out made my heart leap—or drop.

I wanted to scream, to go in, to tell her to wake up. But I couldn't. All I could do was sit, trembling, praying, hoping.

I caught Nova's eye. Her face was pale, but resolute. I squeezed her hand. "We have to be strong. For her."

For her. Every thought returned to that. Care. My friend, my sister, my light.

Waiting Room – Nova's POV

I sat rigid in the chair, fists clenched, eyes fixed on the OR door. I had kept her secret all this time, protected her from stress, fought for her every day. And now, as the reality of the surgery hit, I felt powerless.

The nurse came out again. I held my breath, my chest tight.

I felt Ben and Daisy next to me, their hands clasped together. Everyone silent. Waiting. Wishing. Hoping.

I whispered under my breath. "Stay with us… stay alive, Care. You've fought too long to leave now."

Waiting Room – Ben's POV

I had never felt so helpless. She was my little sister. And now she was slipping into the hands of strangers, no—surgeons, fighting for her life.

I gripped my knees, rocking slightly. My head down. My mind raced. What if… no. I couldn't. I wouldn't let myself think that way.

"She's going to pull through," I murmured. But my voice sounded hollow even to me.

Waiting Room – Daisy's POV

I had been jealous once. Competitive. Distrustful. But now… I couldn't breathe. Seeing her like this—so small, so vulnerable—I understood the truth. She wasn't perfect. She was just a girl. A girl we loved. A girl we couldn't lose.

I wanted to be angry. I wanted to fight. But all I could do was sit, frozen, tears streaming.

Waiting Room – Ash's POV (Again)

I couldn't stop shaking. I thought about the first day we met. The scared, quiet girl. The one no one cared about. I had been there for her. And now… I had to be there again, but I couldn't touch her, couldn't hold her, couldn't protect her from this.

"Please, Care… survive," I whispered. My throat ached. My heart felt like it was being ripped apart.

Waiting Room – Cole's POV (Again)

I sat on the edge of my chair, hands gripping the arms so tightly I thought they might break. Every step, every sound from the OR made me flinch.

I kept thinking about that kiss—the last time I held her before she went under. How fragile she was. How alive she was.

"Don't leave me," I muttered. Over and over. "Don't leave me…"

Author's POV – OR & Cliffhanger

Inside the OR, the surgeons worked with precision, but Care's vitals were dropping. Blood pressure falling. Heart rate irregular. Machines beeped frantic warnings.

The anesthesiologist injected medications, adjusted the oxygen, tried desperately to stabilize her. But despite all efforts, her body was fragile, slipping.

The lead surgeon checked the monitors, murmured instructions. Sweat beaded on his forehead.

A nurse exited the OR quickly, then returned. Another nurse whispered updates. Time stretched. Every second was a pendulum of fear.

Finally, a shadow moved near the anesthesia machine. The surgeon scribbled something on a clipboard, noting the exact moment—his eyes betraying the grim certainty in that room.

Outside, the waiting room was unaware. They did not know. They only saw the nurses moving in and out, holding their breath, giving updates with careful words. They could only wait.
