Chapter 1 - The First Glance

The beginning

The first rays of sunlight spilled across the quiet streets of Westwood City, reflecting off the glass windows of the school buses as they made their way toward Westwood High School. For most students, it was just another ordinary morning, filled with routine, chatter, and the predictable rhythm of hallways echoing with footsteps and laughter. But for Lucinda Leo, today was anything but ordinary.

Clutching her notebooks tightly to her chest, Lucinda stepped off the bus, her hazel eyes scanning the sprawling campus before her. It was her first day at this new school—a fresh start after a long summer of moving and adjusting to her mother's new job in the city. She could feel the weight of the unknown pressing on her chest: new classrooms, new teachers, new classmates. But beneath that nervous energy was something else—a spark of curiosity, a faint whisper of excitement that maybe, just maybe, something extraordinary was waiting for her here.

She adjusted the strap of her bag and took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. "Okay, Lucinda… you've done this before. You can do it again," she whispered to herself. Her voice barely carried over the distant hum of students gathering near the entrance.

Lucinda walked slowly toward the main gate, her heels clicking softly against the tiled pavement. Around her, clusters of students greeted each other with high-fives, laughter, and casual teasing. Some were immersed in their phones, others were already engaged in animated conversations, and a few, like her, seemed hesitant, scanning the crowd for familiar faces that weren't there.

She reached the edge of the courtyard and paused. The school's sprawling architecture was both intimidating and awe-inspiring. Large windows reflected the early morning sun, and banners advertising clubs and upcoming events swayed gently in the breeze. The scent of fresh grass mixed with the faint aroma of cafeteria breakfast, making the air feel alive with possibility.

"Lucinda!" a cheerful voice called out, breaking through her thoughts.

She turned to see her new best friend—or so she hoped—Maya, waving excitedly from across the courtyard. Maya had arrived early, as if determined to scout the territory and claim her role as Lucinda's guide through the social labyrinth of Westwood High.

"Good morning, Maya," Lucinda said, offering a small smile as she approached.

Maya's grin was wide and infectious. "You're finally here! I've been saving a spot for you." She gestured to a shaded bench under a blooming cherry blossom tree. "I swear, if this place intimidates you, I'll be right by your side."

Lucinda chuckled softly, feeling a little of her tension ease. "Thanks… I think I'm going to need it."

As they sat down, Maya's eyes sparkled with mischief. "So, have you heard? There's a new student joining today, and everyone's been talking about him all week."

Lucinda raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Who?"

Maya leaned closer, lowering her voice as if revealing a secret. "His name's Leo… Lucinda, you have to see him. He's… well, let's just say, he's hard to ignore."

Lucinda laughed lightly, shaking her head. "You always say that about every new student."

"I'm serious this time! Trust me," Maya insisted. "I heard he's charming, talented, and… you'll see. Just wait."

Lucinda felt a flutter in her chest, a mix of curiosity and apprehension. She wasn't sure what to expect, but something about the way Maya spoke made it feel like fate was already nudging her toward him.

The morning bell rang sharply, sending a wave of students surging into the hallways. Lucinda and Maya walked together, navigating the crush of bodies, lockers slamming, and the constant hum of voices. The school was alive with energy, and Lucinda felt a mix of awe and anxiety as she tried to memorize the route to her first class.

It was then that it happened.

A sudden collision—someone bumped into her from the side. Books tumbled to the floor in a messy pile, papers fluttering like startled birds.

"Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry!" a deep, apologetic voice said immediately.

Lucinda looked up and froze.

Standing before her was a tall boy with tousled black hair that fell just above his eyes, and a pair of warm brown eyes that seemed to look straight into her very thoughts. He bent down quickly, gathering her scattered notebooks with careful hands.

"Here… you dropped these," he said, handing them back to her, his fingers brushing hers lightly.

Lucinda felt a strange flutter in her chest, a sensation she couldn't quite place. "Thank… thank you," she murmured, her voice catching slightly.

He gave a small, almost shy smile. "I'm Leo. I just transferred here… um, I mean, I guess we're both new to each other, right?"

Lucinda blinked, caught off guard by the gentle warmth in his voice. "I… I'm Lucinda Leo," she replied, a small smile forming on her lips despite herself.

Leo's eyebrows lifted slightly in surprise. "Wait… your name is Lucinda Leo?" He said it carefully, as if tasting the words. "That's… a beautiful name."

Her cheeks warmed at his compliment. For a moment, the sounds of the bustling hallway faded into the background. All she could hear was the quiet rhythm of her own heartbeat, echoing in her ears.

Before she could say anything else, a loud voice echoed down the corridor.

"Leo! Practice starts in ten minutes!"

A group of students appeared at the end of the hallway, waving. Leo sighed dramatically but smiled. "Duty calls," he said, turning toward them. Then he glanced back at Lucinda. "I hope I see you around."

And just like that, he disappeared into the crowd, leaving her standing there with a fluttering chest and a thousand thoughts racing through her mind.

Lucinda gathered her belongings, her hands trembling slightly. She couldn't explain why, but meeting Leo felt significant, as though something had shifted in the world—something that might change everything.

She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. The morning continued, classes, teachers, and new faces filling her day, but Leo lingered at the edge of her mind. Every glance out the window, every rustle of movement in the hall, every whisper of a passing student made her wonder if he was nearby.

After school, Lucinda retreated to the music room—a quiet sanctuary where she could think, reflect, and lose herself in the melodies of the piano. She ran her fingers lightly over the keys, producing a gentle tune that mirrored her restless thoughts.

The door creaked softly. Lucinda turned, expecting an empty room, but found herself face-to-face with… Leo.

He stood quietly in the doorway, watching her play. His expression was unreadable, but there was a softness in his eyes that made her pulse quicken.

"You play beautifully," he said finally, his voice low and steady.

Lucinda felt her cheeks flush again. "Th-thank you," she stammered.

For a moment, neither spoke. The sound of the piano filled the room, weaving around them like a bridge between two hearts that hadn't yet met.

Leo stepped closer, the soft echo of his footsteps blending with the fading notes. "Your music… it feels like something I've been searching for," he said.

Lucinda's breath caught. "What do you mean?"

He gave her a small, enigmatic smile. "Someday, you'll understand."

And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving her alone with her thoughts, the piano, and a heart that had begun to dream of something far greater than she had ever imagined.

Outside, the stars had long faded into the dawn, but somewhere beyond the city lights, destiny had already begun to weave its invisible threads, connecting two souls in a story that would reach… beyond the stars.
