Synopsis
Atara Vertasi, the no-nonsense president of the Arts Club, has her world measured in brushstrokes, blueprints, and deadlines. Calm, friendly, but sharp when serious, she thrives on order and precision. Across the hall, Asher Sullivan, the messy-hearted guitarist of an up-and-coming band, thrives on sound-raw, imperfect, and alive. Their worlds shouldn't overlap. Yet through passing glances, overheard melodies, and silent observations, Atara begins to notice cracks in her own indifference. What was once "just some band boy" becomes harder to ignore, especially as the school festival looms-a stage where arts and music can no longer stay apart. It's not love. Not yet. But it's the first note of something neither expected.

Chapter 1 - Fresh Start

The first bell of the school year echoed through the courtyard, bouncing between the old walls of Building A and the sleek glass panels of Building B. Students poured into the pathways, waving excitedly, comparing schedules, dragging overstuffed bags. It smelled like new notebooks, cafeteria bread, and a little bit of chaos.

Atara moved through the hallway of Building A with practiced calmness, clutching her sketchpad. She slipped between noisy clusters of students taking selfies and giggling freshmen who kept blocking the path.

"First day," she thought. "Let's not die this early."

She stepped into the Arts Club room, breathing in the cleaner, quieter air.

Lira was already there, surrounded by posters and rolls of tape. "Uy, Atara! Ang aga mo ah." She was half-standing, half-struggling with a crooked poster.

"Maingay sa hallway," Atara said simply, placing her sketchpad on a chair. "Dito mas... manageable."

Lira laughed, dropping the tape on the table. "Ayun! Alam ko na 'yan. Nagtatago ka na naman sa katahimikan."

"I just like peace," Atara replied, smoothing the tablecloth with efficient movements. "At least for the first morning."

"Good luck," Lira said with a grin. "Pag nagsidatingan yung members mamaya, goodbye sa peace na 'yan."

Atara let out a quiet sigh-half tired, half amused. "Expected."

"Pero enjoy muna natin 'to," Lira added, stretching. "Tahimik ngayon... for now."

Atara nodded. "Temporary happiness."

Meanwhile, chaos had already taken over Building B.

Asher spotted Mia by the lockers and practically jogged towards her. "Miaaa! First day! Hindi ka man lang nagpakita kahapon!"

Mia snapped her locker shut and eyed him. "Hindi ako lumalabas pag patapos na ang summer. Rule ko 'yon."

"Ay ganun?" Asher slung his bag over his shoulder. "So ako pala ang unang biktima ngayong taon?"

"Obvious ba?" she said, smirking.

He raised a hand dramatically. "Grabe. The betrayal."

"Ano pang bago?" Mia shot back as they walked.

They found Ken turning the corner with a bottle of water tucked under his arm.

"Oh, ayan na ang makulit," Ken said as soon as he saw Asher.

Asher put a hand to his chest, pretending to be offended. "Uy, bakit ako agad pinaparinggan ng mga people today?"

Mia answered before Ken could. "Kasi totoo siya."

Ken nodded, satisfied. "Exactly."

Asher groaned exaggeratedly. "Unbelievable. First day pa lang bullied na ako papaguidance ko kayo!"

"First day mo lang ba?" Mia muttered.

They all laughed.

A little farther down, Rafael passed by with his bass case slung effortlessly over one shoulder. Elise followed behind him carrying her keyboard bag, giving a polite smile before rushing toward her classroom. Bryan leaned out of a doorway just long enough to yell:

"Asher! Sabongon later, ha! Don't chicken out!"

Asher laughed. "Pre, bad yun!!!"

Bryan only winked and disappeared.

Asher shook his head, smiling. "Same school, same circus," he thought. "Kinda missed this."

Back in Building A, Atara arranged the markers and brushes on the table with neat, careful precision. A couple of students peeked through the door.

"Ang aga ng Arts Club," one whispered.

"Atara kasi," Lira replied with pride. "Queen of preparedness."

Atara didn't comment, she simply continued organizing.

"Quiet start," she thought. "Please stay like this."

The bell had rung, sending a wave of students spilling into the hallways of Building B. Atara walked alongside Lira on the second floor, her sketchpad clutched against her chest. The second floor hummed with chatter, lockers slamming, and students rushing to their classrooms.

"Prez, ikaw na naman tahimik ha," Lira nudged her shoulder playfully. "Seryoso ka pa rin kahit first day palang!"

"I'm fine," Atara replied calmly, her eyes scanning the crowd. She thought, "Better to watch than get caught in all that noise."

Lira rolled her eyes. "Seryoso ka talaga. Pero 'wag kang magtataka kung ma-miss mo yung energy sa labas ah. Ang dami pa namang nagkakatuwaan!"

Atara smirked faintly. "She's still too energetic for me... but it's fine."

Downstairs on the first floor, Asher leaned casually against the wall outside the Music Club room. His guitar case slung over his shoulder, he spotted Mia coming down the stairs.

"Asher, wag ka naman dito nakasabit sa pader, baka matapilok ka sa excitement," she teased, a grin tugging at her lips.

Asher laughed. "Matapilok? Wala namang ganung panganib, Mia. Pero yes, exciting ang first day!"

Ken and Bryan appeared nearby, Bryan carrying his bass. "Grabe, ang dami na namang tao sa hallway," Ken commented.

Asher smirked. "Oo nga eh. Pero at least fun naman, di ba? First day na, may konting chaos."

Mia rolled her eyes at him. "Seryoso, Asher... you never change."

Meanwhile, Atara and Lira strolled past the Arts Club room. Half-finished posters leaned against the walls, paintbrushes scattered across tables.

"Ganda na ng set-up natin, Prez," Lira said, picking up a small paint palette. "Pero kailangan pa ng konting ayos sa corner na ito."

Atara glanced around quietly. "Noted. Mas maayos kapag walang kalat sa simula." She thought, "It's easier to focus when everything's in place."

A few other students passed by, peeking into the room curiously. Atara noticed them and felt a faint smile tug at her lips. Nice to see them interested... even for something simple.

From the first floor, Asher's laughter carried upstairs. He waved at Atara and Lira.

"Atara! Dito ka muna sakin!" he called.

Lira nudged her. "Go na, Prez. Konti lang naman."

Atara carefully walked down to the first floor. As she reached him, Asher handed her a doodle he'd done over the summer.

"Thought you might like this," he said with a grin. "Old habits die hard."

Atara examined it, lips twitching into a tiny smile. She thought, "Still ridiculous... but somehow, it makes me feel better."

Mia peeked from behind him, smirking. "Uy, baka ma-kilig ka pa."

"Shut up," Atara muttered softly, though her thoughts betrayed her. "I'm not... maybe a little..."

Ken and Bryan leaned against the stair railing, whispering. "Parang lumalapit sila, ha," Bryan muttered.

Ken smirked. "Friends na sila matagal na, pero siguro, timing lang ang kulang."

The bell rang again, signaling the next class. Students began to scatter, some chatting, some rushing to their rooms.

Asher nudged Atara gently. "Kita tayo sa lunch, ha? Eat tayo together" he said lightly.

Atara nodded. "Sige. Don't make me wait too long," she replied, thinking, "I'll keep an eye on him, as usual."

The courtyard filled with movement, laughter, and the hum of the campus coming fully alive. Between the first and second floors of Building B, two friends shared a quiet, fleeting connection-a small moment that would carry through the day.

The morning rush had settled into a quieter hum. Students wandered through the courtyard, some heading to the canteen, others lounging under the sun, catching up with friends. Atara moved along the edge of the crowd, her sketchpad pressed to her chest, looking for a quiet spot to eat. "Finally, a moment without chaos,"

From the opposite side of the courtyard, Asher spotted her sitting alone on a bench beneath a small awning. He jogged over, guitar case bouncing lightly on his back.

"Uy, Atara! Bakit parang antahimik mo?" he asked, plopping down beside her with a grin.

Atara raised an eyebrow, lips twitching. "Tahimik? Hindi mo ba nakikita ang paligid? Ang dami ng tao dito."

Asher laughed. "Oo nga, pero ang vibes dito... parang kulang ka sa kalokohan," he teased, nudging her lightly with his elbow.

Atara shifted slightly away but didn't frown. "Hindi lahat ng tao kailangan kalokohan," she said, picking up her sandwich. "...pero okay, siguro fine na rin na may kasama sa lunch."

"Sandwich lang?" he asked, leaning back on his hands. "Ang simple-simple mo talaga, Prez."

Atara shrugged, picking at the edges of her sandwich. "Wala lang. Hindi ako gutom eh."

Asher shook his head with a grin. "Naku, hindi pwede 'yan. Sandali lang, may solusyon ako." He stood up and jogged toward the campus canteen. A few minutes later, he returned with a small tray of rice, grilled chicken, and vegetables. "Boom. Ang complete na lunch. Para lang sa'yo."

Atara blinked, a bit surprised. "Asher, hindi mo naman kailangan-"

He waved her off, plopping down beside her again. "Shh. Huwag mo nang labanan. Kain ka na. Para magka-energy tayo sa buong araw."

She hesitated, but eventually took a bite, quietly appreciating the effort. She didn't say it aloud, but she thought, "Well... he does have a point. Mas okay nga kung kumain."

Asher munched on his own food, still grinning. "Teka, hindi ko alam kung gusto ko ba o nakaka-good vibes ang ganitong sitwasyon. We're basically sharing a proper lunch, Prez."

Atara raised an eyebrow, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. "Alam mo, nakakatuwa pa rin na nakaupo lang ako dito, tahimik... tapos ikaw pa ang nag-aasikaso ng lunch ko."

He grinned, nudging the lunch box slightly toward her. "Eh, syempre. Konting effort lang para masiguro, hindi ka lang busog, safe ka pa rin. Win-win, 'di ba?"

Nearby, Mia passed by and noticed them. "Ayy, cute niyo ha," she teased, elbowing Ken lightly. "Ang sweet naman ni Asher, nagdadala pa ng rice sa'yo, Atara."

Atara coughed into her tissue, cheeks heating up, while Asher shot Mia a playful glare. "Uy, wag niyo naman i-overthink ha. Lunch lang 'to, nothing more."

Mia just grinned, walking off. Atara looked at Asher and thought, "Huh... maybe lunch with him isn't that bad.

The sun was warming the courtyard, students walking by, chatting, and laughing. The simple act of sharing a meal made the world feel lighter, quieter, even amidst the usual chaos of the first day back.

Atara wiped her hands with a tissue and leaned back slightly on the bench, exhaling. For the first time since morning, her shoulders weren't tense.

"Asher," she said casually, glancing at him, "salamat... sa lunch."

He shrugged, looking ahead at the students crossing the path. "No problem-o!.l Hindi ka naman pwedeng puro sandwich tas diet lang buong buhay mo."

A faint smile tugged at Atara's lips.

"Hindi naman buong buhay," she said. "Today lang."

"Today lang daw, eme mo" Asher echoed, shaking his head lightly. "Prez, next time sabihin mo lang kung wala ka pang kain. Hindi 'yung hinihintay mo pang mahilo bago kumain, okay?"

Atara rolled her eyes, but there was no bite in it.

"Hindi ako mahihilo ng basta basta."

"Sure."

They sat in silence for a moment, not awkward, just quiet. The kind of quiet that comes when neither person feels the need to fill it.

A group of students passed by laughing loudly, breaking the stillness. Atara watched them for a second, her expression softening.

"Ang dali lang sa kanila, noh?" she murmured.

Asher glanced at her. "Hmm?"

"Wala lang," she said, shaking her head. "Iniisip ko lang... mukhang magaan ang buhay nila."

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he leaned forward, elbows on his knees, looking at the same group of students now disappearing around the building.

"Hindi natin sure," he said at last. "Baka iniisip din nila na ang dali ng buhay ng iba."

Atara looked at him, surprised by the answer.

He noticed her stare and smirked slightly.

"Anong tingin mo sa'kin, puro kalokohan lang?"

"Mostly," she replied without missing a beat.

Asher let out a quiet laugh. "Grabe ka talaga."

They both stood up after a while, carrying the empty tray toward the return area near the cafeteria entrance. The afternoon heat had softened into a warm breeze, rustling the trees around the courtyard.

As they walked along the shaded pathway, Atara glanced around. Students were gathered under trees, some reviewing notes, others just talking. The campus felt alive in a way she hadn't noticed earlier.

"Tagal ko na dito," she said quietly, almost to herself, "pero parang ngayon ko lang ulit nakita 'to."

Asher walked beside her, hands in his pockets.

"Kasi lagi kang nagmamadali," he said. "Class, duties, meeting... uwi. Paulit-ulit."

She didn't deny it.

They slowed as they reached the open field, where a few students were tossing a ball around. The sky was bright, wide, endless.

Atara crossed her arms lightly. "Ikaw? Hindi ka ba nagmamadali?"

Asher shrugged. "Minsan. Pero... sayang naman kung hindi mo titignan 'yung paligid paminsan-minsan."

She looked at him again, studying his expression. He wasn't joking now. Just calm. Honest.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Asher stretched his arms over his head.

"May next class ka pa?"

"Meron," Atara said. "Mamaya pa naman."

"Same," he replied. "May oras pa."

They began walking again, slower this time, with no real destination, just following the shaded paths between buildings.

And for the first time in a long while, Atara didn't feel like she was rushing toward the next responsibility.

She was just... walking.

The shaded path curved along the side of Building B, where the noise from the courtyard softened into a distant murmur. Leaves rustled overhead, and the late-afternoon light filtered through the trees, broken into shifting patches on the ground.

Asher walked beside her, unhurried, occasionally kicking at small pebbles along the path.

"Ang tahimik dito, noh?" he said, glancing around.

"At kaya nga dito ako dumadaan minsan, eh" Atara replied. "Konti lang kasi tao."

"Ahhh," he nodded. "So secret route mo pala to."

"Hindi naman sa secret. Hindi lang kasi pinapansin ng iba." Atara replied.

They reached the stairwell entrance at the side of the building. A few students passed by, talking quietly, but the hallway inside was noticeably calmer than the courtyard.

As they started up the stairs, Asher spoke again

"Anong subject mo next?"

"Math," Atara answered. "Ikaw?"

"Filipino," he said, making a face. "Hindi naman siya mahirap, pero inaantok ako palagi dun."

Atara glanced at him.

"Baka kasi hindi ka nakikinig, tsk tsk."

"Uy, nakikinig ako ah," he protested. "Minsan nga lang."

She let out a small laugh, almost under her breath.

They reached the landing between floors and paused automatically to let a group of students come down. The chatter echoed briefly, then faded as the stairwell quieted again.

As they resumed climbing, Atara found herself speaking without thinking.

"Salamat ulit kanina."

Asher looked at her. "Sa lunch ba?"

She nodded.

He shrugged lightly. "Wala lang 'yun."

For a moment, he hesitated, then added more quietly,

"Mas okay din naman kumain pag may kasama ka diba?"

Atara didn't answer right away. She just kept walking, her hand trailing lightly along the railing.

"I guess," she said at last.

They reached the second floor. The hallway stretched ahead, lined with classrooms and windows overlooking the open field. Afternoon light spilled across the floor, warm and steady.

This was where their paths usually split.

Atara slowed slightly, then stopped.

"Dito na 'ko," she said.

Asher nodded. "Sige. Kita ulit mamaya, ingat!"

She turned to go, then paused.

"Asher."

"Hm..?"

"Next time... hindi mo na kailangang bumili ng lunch para lang sa'kin."

He smiled a little.

"Ehh bakit?" he said. "Gusto ko eh, hehe."

Atara looked at him for a second, caught off guard, then turned away before her expression could give anything away.

"Bahala ka nga," she said simply, walking down the hallway.

Asher watched her go for a moment, then rubbed the back of his neck and let out a quiet breath.

"Ehh..? bakit niya kaya sinabi yun.." he though.

A few seconds later, he turned and headed up the stairs toward the third floor, the faint noise of students and classroom classes approached.

And as the bell rang in the distance, the calm of lunch slowly gave way to the rhythm of the school day once more.

Classrooms filled with the scrape of chairs, and the low hum of conversations dying down as teachers began their lectures. The warmth of the afternoon lingered through the open windows, carrying faint sounds from the field outside.

Atara sat near the window, notebook open, pen poised. Numbers and formulas covered the board in neat rows, but her mind drifted for a split second.

"Ehh bakit? Gusto ko eh, hehe."

She blinked and straightened in her seat.

"Focus," she murmured under her breath, flipping to a clean page.

Across the building on the third floor, Asher leaned back in his chair, twirling his pen between his fingers while their Filipino teacher discussed symbolism in poetry.

"Sullivan," the teacher called.

He straightened immediately. "Po?"

"Pakibasa ang susunod na talata."

He cleared his throat and read, voice steady. surprisingly serious, A few classmates glanced at him, maybe expecting a joke-but none came.

When he finished, the teacher nodded in approval.

Asher sat back down, exhaling quietly. For once, he wasn't distracted.

"Mas okay din naman kumain pag may kasama ka diba?"

The thought lingered longer than he expected.

Back in her classroom, Atara solved a problem on the board when called. Her handwriting was precise, confident. A few classmates whispered impressed comments as she returned to her seat.

But as she sat down, her gaze drifted briefly to the window again.

The courtyard below looked smaller from up here.

Calmer.

Her phone buzzed softly against her desk

She hesitated before glancing at it.

Asher:

"Buhay k p ba dyan, Prez?"

She stared at the screen for a second before typing back.

Atara:

"Ye."

A few seconds passed.

Asher:

"Anlamig ah, freezer yarn?"

She almost smiled.

Atara:

"OA ka talaga. Sorry if that's what it seemed like though. I'm well and the lesson's pretty interesting for me. How about you?"

Asher:

"Saks lang naman, di siya exciting.. gusto ko nga matulog eh hehe."

Across the building, Asher bit back a grin, quickly muting his phone as the teacher turned around.

The rest of the period passed quietly, but lighter somehow.

When the dismissal bell rang, chairs scraped again and students poured into the hallways.

Atara packed her things carefully, stepping into the flow of students outside her classroom

At the end of the hallway, near the stairwell, she spotted a familliar figure leaning casually against the wall.

Asher looked up as if he had been waiting.

"Timing!" he sod. "Sabay?"

Atara adjusted the strap of her bag. For a split second, she considered saying she had somewhere else to be.

But instead-

"Sige, pwede naman." she replied.

And together, they moved with the current of students down the stairs, the afternoon stretching ahead of them.

The hallway buzzed with end-of-day noise, lockers closing, laughter echoing, footsteps rushing towards gates and waiting rides. The sunlight had softened, turning the windows gold.

Asher walked beside Atara, hands in his pockets, matching her pace without really thinking about it

"Ang haba ng araw," he said, stretching his shoulders. "First day pa lang, parang pagod na agad lahat."

Atara glanced at him. "Hindi naman. Normal lang. Nakakapanibago lang ulit."

"Hmm," Asher nodded. "Kaya nga eh. Parang reset button lang."

They reached the stairwell and joined the slow stream of students heading down. Someone ahead nearly tripped, and a ripple of laughter followed. The atmosphere felt lighter now that classes were over.

At the ground floor, Ken caught sight of them from across the hall.

"Uy!" he called, jogging over. "Pauwi na ba kayo?"

"Malapit na," Asher replied. "Ikaw?"

"Dadaan pa ako sa tindahan sa labas eh. May pinapabili si Mama." Ken looked between them, a small grin tugging at his lips. "Sige, mauna na ako."

"Paalam," Atara said politely.

Ken waved and disappeared into the crowd.

They stepped outside into the courtyard again. The heat of noon had faded into a comfortable warmth, and the sky was starting to soften toward late afternoon.

For a few moments, they walked in comfortable silence.

Not awkward.

Just quiet.

A group of freshmen ran past them, laughing loudly about something neither of them caught. Somewhere near the field, a whistle blew from the PE area.

Asher glanced sideways. "Busy ka ba mamaya?"

Atara shook her head slightly. "Hindi naman. Bakit?"

"Wala lang," he said quickly. "Na-curious lang ako."

She studied him for a second, then looked ahead again.

He asks things like that so casually, she thought.

They reached the main gate, where students clustered while waiting for tricycles, rides, or friends. The late sun painted long shadows across the pavement.

Asher stopped near the curb. "Dito na ako."

Atara nodded. "Ako rin."

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Asher scratched the back of his neck lightly. "Ah... Atara."

"Yes?"

"Salamat sa lunch... I mean-" He stopped himself and laughed softly. "Sa company pala."

Atara blinked once, surprised, then answered simply, "Salamat din."

And that was enough.

They parted ways after that, blending into different directions of the crowd, the distance between them growing slowly with every step.

But neither of them felt quite as separate as they had that morning.

That night, the campus was quiet again, classrooms dark, hallways empty, the noise of the first day fading into memory.

Somewhere in Building B, chairs sat neatly under desks, the sunlight gone from the windows.

It had been an ordinary day, classes, conversations, small meetings, shared lunches.

Nothing extraordinary.

Nothing dramatic.

And yet...

For two friends who had known each other for years, something subtle had shifted-not loud enough to notice, not clear enough to name.

Just a quiet change, like the first breeze before a season turns.

And neither of them realized it yet.

TO BE CONTINUED.
