Chapter 35 - Sooah’s Mother Notices

The visit had not been planned.

That, more than anything, would later trouble Han Mira.

In families like theirs — families that controlled companies like Hanseong Holdings — visits were usually scheduled days in advance. Assistants arranged everything. Drivers coordinated arrivals. Even casual lunches often appeared in shared calendars weeks ahead.

But this morning had been different.

The feeling had come suddenly.

A quiet unease that had followed her through breakfast, through her morning walk in the garden, through the first hour of reviewing documents in her study.

Something was wrong.

Not dramatically wrong.

Just… wrong.

At first she told herself she was imagining it. Mothers worried too much sometimes. Even when their children were adults, married, and running global corporations.

Still, the feeling remained.

So she told her driver to prepare the car.

An hour later she arrived at the Kang residence.

The House

The mansion stood exactly as it always had.

Large.

Elegant.

Quiet.

It was the kind of home built to represent generational wealth — tall glass windows, wide stone pathways, carefully arranged gardens that looked untouched by time.

From the outside, everything appeared perfect.

Exactly what people expected from the marriage between the heir of KGI Group and the heiress of Hanseong Holdings.

Security opened the gates immediately when her car arrived.

Inside, the staff greeted her politely.

Nothing seemed unusual.

But Han Mira had lived long enough to know that appearances meant very little.

She stepped into the living room.

Daehyun was already there.

The First Thing She Notices

He stood when she entered.

As always, polite.

Respectful.

Calm.

"Mother," he greeted, bowing his head slightly.

She had always appreciated that about him. Despite being the son of the richest man in the world, he never treated elders carelessly.

But today something about him felt… different.

Not obviously.

Just subtly.

He was wearing long sleeves.

That alone meant nothing — except the weather outside was warm.

Very warm.

Yet the sleeves remained buttoned down to his wrists.

She said nothing.

Instead she smiled.

"I was nearby and thought I'd visit."

Daehyun returned the smile easily.

"You're always welcome."

His tone sounded perfectly natural.

But something about his eyes looked tired.

Very tired.

Sooah

"Where is Sooah?" Mira asked.

Daehyun gestured toward the hallway.

"She's resting."

"Resting?"

"She was tired this morning."

That explanation made sense.

Technically.

Everyone in the family knew Sooah had taken medical leave from work. The doctors had recommended rest after she began experiencing periods of memory instability. It was concerning, yes, but manageable.

At least that was what everyone had believed.

But Mira noticed something else.

This wasn't the first time Sooah had been resting when she visited recently.

Not the second either.

Sooah had always been energetic.

Driven.

The kind of woman who thrived on activity.

Now she seemed to sleep… a lot.

Mira glanced briefly down the hallway.

"She's still asleep?"

Daehyun nodded.

"She took her medicine earlier."

Again.

A reasonable explanation.

Yet the uneasy feeling returned.

Small Things

They sat together in the living room while tea was prepared.

Minjun soon wandered into the room with his dinosaur toy clutched in his hand.

The boy immediately brightened when he saw her.

"Grandma!"

Mira smiled warmly, opening her arms.

"Minjun."

He ran into her embrace happily.

Children brought warmth into any room they entered.

But even in that joyful moment, Mira noticed another small detail.

When Daehyun leaned down to pick up a dropped toy near the table—

He flinched.

It was subtle.

So subtle that most people would never have noticed.

But Mira had raised Sooah.

She had spent decades observing people carefully in boardrooms and negotiations.

She knew what pain looked like when someone tried to hide it.

Daehyun recovered immediately.

Standing straight.

Expression unchanged.

But the moment had happened.

She had seen it.

Her eyes moved slowly back to his sleeves.

Long sleeves.

In warm weather.

Interesting.

Sooah Joins Them

Eventually Sooah appeared.

She walked into the living room slowly, still looking slightly drowsy.

"Mama?"

Her voice sounded surprised.

"You came?"

Mira smiled gently.

"Just visiting."

Sooah sat beside Daehyun.

For a few minutes the conversation flowed normally.

Family things.

Small updates.

Minjun showing his dinosaur toy.

Everything looked peaceful.

Until it happened.

Sooah was in the middle of explaining something about a documentary she had watched the previous night.

"…and then the scientist said that memory is connected to—"

She stopped.

Her expression changed slightly.

Confused.

"…wait."

She frowned.

"What was I saying?"

The room went quiet.

Daehyun answered immediately.

"You were talking about the documentary."

"Oh."

Sooah blinked.

Then she laughed softly.

"Right."

She continued speaking as if nothing had happened.

But Mira felt the unease inside her grow heavier.

That wasn't simple forgetfulness.

That had been abrupt.

Sharp.

Like a sentence that simply disappeared from her mind.

Minjun Speaks

Minjun climbed onto the couch beside his grandmother.

Children often spoke the most honest truths in a room.

He leaned toward her and whispered with the seriousness only toddlers possessed.

"Mommy got mad yesterday."

Mira looked down at him.

"Mad?"

Minjun nodded.

"Yeah."

He demonstrated by scrunching his face dramatically.

"She shouted."

The room grew slightly still.

Mira glanced toward Sooah.

But Sooah was looking confused.

"What?"

Minjun continued happily, unaware of the tension.

"Daddy was playing with Mommy."

"Playing?"

"Yeah."

He made punching motions with his hands.

"Like fighting."

Daehyun laughed softly.

The sound was calm.

Relaxed.

"Oh, that."

He reached over and ruffled Minjun's hair.

"We were playing a game."

Minjun nodded, satisfied.

Children accepted explanations easily.

But Mira did not.

Her gaze slowly returned to Daehyun.

Still smiling.

Still calm.

Still wearing long sleeves.

Still slightly careful with how he moved his arms.

The Realization Begins

She didn't say anything immediately.

Instead she continued the visit normally.

Tea.

Light conversation.

Watching Minjun play.

Observing.

That was when she noticed the final detail.

When Sooah stood up suddenly to get water, she paused halfway across the room.

Confused.

"…Why did I come here again?"

Daehyun answered gently from behind her.

"You wanted water."

"Oh."

Sooah smiled.

"Right."

She walked toward the kitchen again.

And Mira felt the quiet dread inside her settle into something heavier.

They had known Sooah's memory problems were real.

Doctors had confirmed it.

But they believed it was manageable.

Temporary episodes.

Not something that affected daily life this deeply.

But now—

The long sleeves.

The flinch.

Minjun's strange comments.

Sooah forgetting mid-sentence.

Sleeping constantly.

The pieces were forming a picture she didn't want to see.

Her eyes moved slowly toward Daehyun again.

He looked composed.

Patient.

Kind.

Exactly the same man everyone praised.

Yet suddenly Mira wondered something she had never asked before.

How much has he been hiding from us?

Because the longer she sat there, the more one quiet thought began forming in her mind.

The condition they believed was mild…

…might have become something far worse.

And if that was true—

Then Kang Daehyun had been carrying the weight of it alone.

For far longer than anyone realized.
