Chapter 39 - The Moment Her Mother Sees

The morning Mira chose to visit her daughter again began with a quiet determination that felt heavier than any boardroom decision she had ever made.

She told no one.

Not even her husband.

Not because she wanted secrecy — but because something inside her needed to see the truth with her own eyes before anything else happened.

For days after the meeting between the two families, the same question had followed her relentlessly.

How bad is it really?

They had heard pieces of it.

Hints.

Minjun's innocent remarks.

The bruises Jinseok had seen on Daehyun's arm.

The subtle signs Mira herself had noticed in the house.

But all of it still existed in fragments.

Rumors.

Observations.

Secondhand truths.

None of them had actually seen it.

And Mira needed to.

Because the thought of sending her daughter to a long-term care facility — even if it was the safest option — was not something a mother could accept without certainty.

So that morning she told her driver to take her to the Kang residence.

The House Before the Storm

The mansion appeared calm when she arrived.

The gates opened smoothly.

The gardens were perfectly maintained.

The house looked exactly like the home of two powerful corporate heirs should look.

Quiet.

Elegant.

Stable.

Inside, the staff greeted her politely.

"Madam Han."

"Good morning."

She nodded politely, but something inside her felt tense.

"Is Sooah awake?" she asked.

A brief hesitation passed between two house staff members.

"Yes, madam."

"Where is she?"

"In the living room."

That answer felt reassuring.

Good.

Normal.

Mira walked slowly down the hallway.

She expected to see her daughter sitting with tea, perhaps reading something, perhaps playing with Minjun's toys while waiting for him to return later.

Instead—

She heard shouting.

The Voice

The sound froze her in place.

It was Sooah's voice.

But not the voice Mira knew.

This voice was sharp.

Panicked.

Frightened.

"Don't touch me!"

Another sound followed.

Something hitting the floor.

Then Daehyun's voice.

Low.

Calm.

"It's okay."

"Please calm down."

Mira's heart dropped violently.

She moved quickly toward the living room.

What She Sees

The scene inside stopped her completely.

Sooah stood near the center of the room.

Her hair was disheveled.

Her breathing fast.

Her eyes wild with fear.

And she was holding a glass vase.

Raised like a weapon.

Across from her stood Kang Daehyun.

He wasn't approaching her aggressively.

He wasn't shouting.

He wasn't angry.

He stood with his hands slightly raised, keeping a careful distance.

Like someone approaching a frightened animal.

"Sooah," he said softly.

"It's me."

Her response came instantly.

"Stay away!"

The vase trembled in her hand.

"You kidnapped me!"

Mira felt her body go cold.

Kidnapped.

Sooah's voice shook violently.

"Where am I?!"

"You're at home," Daehyun said gently.

"No!"

She stepped backward.

"You're lying!"

The fear in her voice sounded real.

Terrifyingly real.

Her eyes darted around the room like someone searching for an escape.

Then she noticed the hallway.

And Mira standing there.

For a moment recognition flickered.

"Mama?"

Relief washed across her face.

Then confusion replaced it.

"…Why are you here?"

Before Mira could answer, Sooah's gaze snapped back toward Daehyun.

The fear returned instantly.

"He's keeping me here!"

The Escalation

The vase flew before anyone could react.

It shattered against the wall behind Daehyun.

Glass exploded across the floor.

Mira gasped.

Daehyun didn't move toward her.

Instead he stepped closer slowly.

"Sooah, please."

"Don't come near me!"

She grabbed the nearest object.

A wooden tray from the coffee table.

And swung it.

Hard.

The impact against his arm echoed sharply through the room.

Mira flinched.

But Daehyun didn't retaliate.

Didn't even raise his voice.

He simply moved forward and caught her wrists gently but firmly before she could strike again.

"I'm sorry," he murmured quietly.

"I have to hold you."

The Truth

Sooah struggled violently.

Panicked.

Terrified.

"Let go!"

"You're hurting me!"

"I don't know you!"

The words cut deeper than anything physical.

Mira's hands trembled.

Because she was seeing something no mother should ever witness.

Her brilliant daughter.

The woman who once negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions with perfect composure.

Now thrashing in pure fear.

Unable to recognize the man she loved.

And Daehyun —

Holding her carefully.

Restraining her without hurting her.

Even as she hit him repeatedly with her free hand.

"Please," he whispered.

"Just breathe."

But Sooah's panic only grew.

She twisted suddenly and bit his shoulder through the fabric of his shirt.

Hard.

Mira gasped again.

Daehyun winced.

The first clear sign of pain she had seen.

But he still didn't let go.

Because if he did—

Sooah might hurt herself.

Or someone else.

The Moment That Breaks Her

Eventually the episode began to fade.

Like a storm slowly losing strength.

Sooah's struggling weakened.

Her breathing slowed.

Confusion replaced panic.

"…What happened?"

Daehyun loosened his grip carefully.

"You had a bad moment," he said gently.

"That's all."

She looked around the room.

Broken glass on the floor.

The tray lying nearby.

Her own hands trembling.

Then she looked at him.

"…Did I do that?"

His answer came instantly.

"It's nothing."

Mira saw it then.

As Sooah stepped closer.

As she touched his arm lightly.

The sleeve of his shirt had torn during the struggle.

And beneath the fabric—

Bruises.

Deep ones.

Old ones.

Layered beneath fresh marks.

Mira felt her breath disappear.

Because now she knew.

Everything.

After

Sooah noticed her mother again.

"Mama?"

Her voice sounded small now.

Embarrassed.

"I don't remember what happened."

Mira forced herself to smile.

"It's okay."

But inside her chest something had shattered.

Because the meeting between the parents suddenly felt far less hypothetical.

The decision they discussed no longer felt premature.

It felt inevitable.

Because Mira had finally seen the truth herself.

The violence.

The fear.

The desperation in Daehyun's quiet restraint.

And the horrifying reality that Sooah had no memory of any of it.

As Mira left the house later that day, one thought echoed painfully in her mind.

Minjun had seen this before.

Many times.

And now she understood why the families had gathered in that quiet meeting room days earlier.

Not to punish Sooah.

Not to abandon her.

But to protect the people she loved most.

Even from herself.
