Chapter 4 - Chapter 4:The Shadow Of Past

Greyford was the kind of town where nothing unusual ever seemed to happen.

At least, that was what Daniel had thought when he first arrived.

But now, as he walked down the quiet street toward his apartment, he couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching him.

It had started the moment that strange man entered the café.

The way he looked at Daniel.

The way his eyes didn't show any surprise.

Almost like he already knew him.

Daniel tried to convince himself it was nothing.

Just a stranger.

Just his imagination.

But the uneasy feeling remained.

He unlocked the bookstore door and stepped inside.

George looked up from behind the counter.

"Back already?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yeah."

George folded his newspaper.

"So how's Greyford treating you so far?"

Daniel shrugged slightly.

"It's quiet."

George chuckled.

"That's the best thing about this place."

Daniel forced a faint smile and headed toward the stairs.

As he climbed up to his apartment, he glanced through the small window on the staircase.

Across the street, a black car was parked near the corner.

The same black car he had noticed earlier.

His stomach tightened slightly.

Maybe it belonged to someone in the town.

Still…

Something didn't feel right.

Daniel entered his apartment and closed the door behind him.

The silence inside felt heavier than before.

He tossed his bag onto the couch and walked toward the window.

The black car was still there.

Parked.

Waiting.

After a few seconds, the car engine started.

The vehicle slowly drove away and disappeared down the street.

Daniel let out a quiet breath.

Maybe he really was imagining things.

Maybe the past couldn't follow him here.

Maybe Greyford really was a fresh start.

But hundreds of miles away, in a quiet hospital room, a woman slowly opened her eyes.

Her face was covered in bandages.

Machines beeped softly beside the bed.

A nurse standing nearby noticed the movement and rushed forward.

"Miss, can you hear me?"

The woman blinked slowly.

Her vision was blurry.

Everything hurt.

Her lips moved weakly.

One word escaped.

"Daniel…"

The nurse looked confused.

"Try not to speak," she said gently.

But the woman's mind was already racing.

Fragments of memory flashed through her head.

Rain.

A crash.

The sound of breaking glass.

And Daniel calling her name.

Tears slowly formed in her eyes.

She had survived.

But the life she once knew was gone.

Meanwhile, back in Greyford, Daniel stepped outside again later that evening.

The town was quieter now.

Most shops were closing.

The orange glow of streetlights filled the streets.

As he walked, he noticed the café lights were still on.

Nora stood inside, cleaning the tables.

When she saw him through the window, she waved.

Daniel hesitated for a moment before stepping inside.

"Working late?" he asked.

Nora smiled.

"Someone has to keep the coffee flowing."

He leaned against the counter.

"I didn't realize coffee shops stayed open this late in small towns."

She shrugged.

"Greyford has its night people."

"Night people?"

"Insomniacs. Writers. People running from their problems."

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"You say that like you know a lot about them."

Nora poured two cups of coffee and handed one to him.

"Let's just say this town attracts people who need a second chance."

Daniel stared at the cup for a moment.

A second chance.

Maybe that's exactly why he came here.

But somewhere far away…

Someone else was also preparing for a second chance.

And soon, the past Daniel tried so hard to escape would find its way back to him.
