Chapter 7 - Chapter 7:The Feeling Of Being Watched

The walk back from the lake was quieter than the walk there.

The sun was beginning to set behind the trees, painting the sky with shades of orange and pink. The path back to Greyford felt longer now, but not in a bad way.

Daniel walked beside Nora, occasionally glancing at her.

She seemed calm, like the strange noise in the forest earlier hadn't bothered her much.

But Daniel couldn't forget it.

He was almost sure someone had been there.

Watching them.

"You're quiet," Nora said suddenly.

Daniel looked at her.

"Just thinking."

"About the noise?"

He nodded.

She shrugged.

"This place is full of animals. Could've been a deer."

"Maybe."

But Daniel wasn't convinced.

They reached the edge of town just as the streetlights flickered on.

Greyford looked peaceful again.

Too peaceful.

Nora pointed toward the café.

"I should get back before my boss thinks I disappeared."

Daniel smiled slightly.

"You are the boss."

She laughed.

"Exactly. Which means I have no excuse."

They stopped outside the café.

For a moment neither of them moved.

Then Nora said, "You know… you don't have to hide everything."

Daniel frowned slightly.

"I'm not hiding."

"Everyone hides something."

He looked away toward the street.

The truth was, he was hiding a lot.

His past.

His real name.

The accident.

And the fear that someday it would all catch up to him.

Nora opened the café door but paused before stepping inside.

"See you tomorrow, Daniel."

He nodded.

"Yeah. See you tomorrow."

She disappeared inside.

Daniel stood there for another moment before turning toward the bookstore.

As he walked down the street, he suddenly felt it again.

That same strange feeling.

Like someone's eyes were on him.

Watching every step.

He slowed down.

Then quickly turned around.

The street was empty.

Just parked cars and quiet buildings.

Daniel shook his head slightly.

"Get a grip," he muttered to himself.

But the feeling didn't go away.

Across the street, hidden behind a parked delivery truck, a man stood silently in the shadows.

The same mysterious man.

Victor.

His cold eyes followed Daniel as he walked away.

Victor pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

The call connected almost immediately.

"Report," the voice on the other side said.

Victor's gaze remained fixed on Daniel.

"He's settled in," Victor replied calmly.

"Has he recognized you?"

"No."

"Good."

Victor's lips curved slightly into a smile.

"But he's starting to feel something."

"What do you mean?"

Victor said quietly, "Instinct."

The voice on the phone chuckled.

"Fear is a powerful weapon."

Victor slipped the phone back into his pocket.

"He still thinks Elena is dead."

There was a brief silence on the line.

"Keep it that way," the voice said.

Victor ended the call.

Then he stepped into the darkness and disappeared.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, Elena stood near the window of her hospital room.

The night sky stretched outside.

Her reflection stared back at her from the glass.

But the face looking back wasn't the same one she remembered.

The doctors had done everything they could.

Reconstructive surgery.

Skin grafts.

Months of recovery.

But the accident had changed her forever.

She slowly touched her cheek.

The scars were hidden now.

But the memories weren't.

A nurse entered the room.

"You should rest."

Elena didn't move.

Instead, she asked a quiet question.

"Did they find him?"

The nurse hesitated.

"You mean Daniel?"

Elena nodded.

The nurse sighed softly.

"The investigators stopped searching months ago."

Elena's hands tightened slightly.

"He's alive," she said firmly.

The nurse looked confused.

"How do you know?"

Elena stared out into the darkness.

"Because if he was dead…"

Her voice trembled slightly.

"I would feel it."

And deep inside her heart, she knew one thing for certain.

Daniel Hayes was still out there.

Somewhere.
