Chapter 38 - Chapter 10: Reputation as Life

Eurostate's reputation system began as a method for measuring social influence but it became something far more consequential over time, ending up affecting access to resources, employment, and social participation. Because of this shift, low reputation gradually restricted a person's opportunities. Eventually individuals with extremely low reputation became socially invisible, an invisibility that produced psychological and physiological collapse. Doctors began noticing a disturbing pattern which was that individuals whose reputation reached zero often died shortly afterward. This phenomenon was labeled relevance failure.

To lose all reputation was to lose narrative existence and without narrative existence, the body itself seemed to lose the will to continue. This was Clause One's most radical outcome.

In this outcome, words did not merely replace swords but became capable of killing, killing not through direct physical force but through the slow erosion of meaning.
