The convoy moved through the darkness like a pack of predators.
Three black SUVs sped down the empty highway, their engines roaring as they cut through the silent night. The city lights had long faded behind them, replaced by endless stretches of dark forest and winding roads.
Inside the lead vehicle, Darius Romano stared through the windshield, his eyes cold and focused.
Every second that passed meant Lily was farther away.
Adrian gripped the steering wheel tightly. The speedometer climbed higher as he pushed the vehicle harder.
"They're heading north," Adrian said, glancing at the GPS screen. "If they keep going this way, they'll reach the old industrial district near the mountains."
Marco's voice came through the radio from the second SUV.
"That's Black Serpent territory."
Lucien spoke next, calm but serious.
"DeLuca owns several abandoned facilities out there. Old factories, private warehouses… even a fortified estate."
Darius finally spoke.
"Then that's where we'll find them."
His voice carried the quiet certainty of a man who had already decided the outcome.
The Serpent's Nest
Lily stepped out of the armored car slowly.
The cold air brushed against her skin as she looked around.
They had arrived at a massive estate hidden deep in the mountains. Tall iron gates surrounded the property, and powerful floodlights illuminated the large stone building in the center.
Guards were everywhere.
Men armed with rifles patrolled the grounds while others stood watch along the walls.
It looked less like a home and more like a fortress.
Alessandro DeLuca stepped out of the vehicle behind her.
"Welcome," he said calmly, "to my home."
Lily crossed her arms defensively.
"I'm not staying."
Alessandro smiled faintly.
"You'll stay until I get what I want."
Two guards approached and escorted Lily toward the main building.
As she walked through the large entrance doors, she noticed something strange.
The interior was beautiful.
Expensive paintings covered the walls. Crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting soft golden light across the marble floors.
Everything looked elegant.
But beneath that elegance, Lily could feel something darker.
Danger.
The War Begins
Back on the highway, Adrian slowed the SUV as they approached a narrow road leading toward the mountains.
"We're getting close," he said.
Lucien's voice crackled through the radio again.
"I see lights ahead. Looks like a heavily guarded property."
Marco whistled softly.
"That's definitely DeLuca's fortress."
Adrian glanced at Darius.
"So what's the plan?"
Darius didn't hesitate.
"We break in."
Marco laughed through the radio.
"Simple and violent. I like it."
Lucien added more seriously, "There will be dozens of guards inside that compound. Maybe more."
Darius's eyes darkened.
"Then they'll learn tonight why people fear the Romano name."
Lily's Truth
Inside the fortress, Lily was led into a large study room.
Bookshelves lined the walls, filled with hundreds of leather-bound volumes. A large wooden desk sat near the windows overlooking the mountains.
Alessandro entered moments later.
The guards quietly left the room, closing the doors behind them.
Lily turned toward him.
"You said my father betrayed you."
Alessandro nodded slowly.
"He did."
"What exactly did he steal?"
Alessandro walked toward the desk and opened a drawer.
He pulled out a small metal device and placed it on the table between them.
"This," he said.
Lily stared at it.
It looked like a small encrypted drive.
"My father stole that?"
"No," Alessandro said calmly.
"He stole the access code for it."
Lily frowned.
"So why do you need me?"
Alessandro leaned against the desk.
"Because your father hid the code somewhere no one would ever find it."
Lily felt a knot forming in her stomach.
"And you think I know where it is?"
Alessandro shook his head.
"I know you do."
The Assault
The SUVs stopped at the edge of a forest overlooking the massive estate.
Darius stepped out of the vehicle first.
The fortress stood in the distance, its bright lights glowing against the dark mountain sky.
Lucien approached beside him.
"That's definitely the place."
Marco checked the magazine in his rifle.
"Looks like a hundred guards."
Adrian cracked his neck.
"Maybe more."
Darius studied the compound carefully.
Tall fences.
Security cameras.
Armed patrols.
Heavy gates.
It was built to stop armies.
But Darius Romano wasn't bringing an army.
He was bringing something worse.
"Adrian," he said.
"Yeah?"
"Disable the power."
Adrian smiled slightly.
"Already working on it."
Lucien looked at Darius.
"And then?"
Darius loaded his weapon.
"Then we go get Lily."
A Hidden Memory
Inside the study, Alessandro watched Lily closely.
"Your father was a genius," he said.
"He designed encryption systems that governments couldn't break."
Lily looked down at the metal drive on the desk.
"And the code?"
Alessandro stepped closer.
"He hid it inside your mind."
Lily froze.
"What?"
"When you were a child," Alessandro continued, "your father created a memory trigger."
Lily shook her head.
"That's impossible."
Alessandro pressed a small button on the device.
The screen lit up.
Numbers flashed across the display.
"Your father encoded the access key inside a childhood memory."
Lily's heart began racing.
"I don't remember anything like that."
Alessandro smiled slightly.
"You will."
Darkness Falls
Outside the fortress, Adrian typed quickly on his laptop.
"Security grid is connected to a central power line," he muttered.
Marco crouched nearby, watching the guards through a sniper scope.
Lucien glanced at Darius.
"This is going to get messy."
Darius's voice was cold.
"It already is."
Adrian suddenly snapped his fingers.
"Got it."
He pressed a key.
Across the fortress, every light suddenly went out.
The compound was plunged into darkness.
Guards shouted in confusion.
Alarms began blaring.
Marco grinned.
"That's our cue."
Darius raised his weapon.
"Move."
The four men sprinted toward the fortress like shadows in the night.
Inside the building, Lily looked up as the lights suddenly died.
"What happened?"
Alessandro's eyes narrowed slightly.
Then he smiled.
"It seems," he said calmly, "that Darius Romano has arrived."
Far outside the building, the first gunshot shattered the night.
The war had reached the serpent's nest.
