Chapter 31 - CHAPTER 32: THE ENEMY WITHIN

The mansion didn't sleep anymore.

It watched.

It listened.

It waited.

By morning, the atmosphere had changed completely.

What was once controlled tension had turned into something sharper—something unstable.

Paranoia.

Lily felt it the moment she stepped into the hallway.

Guards weren't just present—they were alert in a way that bordered on aggressive. Every movement was tracked. Every glance lingered a second too long.

Even the staff moved differently.

Quieter.

Careful.

It wasn't just about Victor anymore.

It was about something worse.

Trust.

"He's not working alone."

The words echoed in Lily's mind as she made her way toward the main hall.

Adrian had said it earlier that morning—calm, certain, dangerous.

"He got in too clean."

"Too precise."

"Someone helped him."

The thought alone made her chest tighten.

Someone inside the mansion.

Someone close.

Lily stepped into the dining room.

Marco was already there, leaning against the table, arms crossed, expression dark.

Adrian stood by the window, phone in hand, speaking in low, clipped tones.

"…I don't care how long it takes," he was saying. "I want names. Every contact, every transaction, every anomaly in the last six months."

A pause.

Then—

"No mistakes."

He ended the call.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

"He's digging deep," Marco said.

"He's hunting," Adrian corrected.

Lily stepped further into the room.

"And whoever helped Victor…?"

Adrian turned to her.

"They're already dead."

The cold certainty in his voice sent a chill through her.

Marco pushed off the table.

"That's assuming we find them first."

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"We will."

Lily crossed her arms.

"How can you be so sure?"

Adrian held her gaze.

"Because they made a mistake."

A pause.

"They let him in."

Later—

The entire mansion was under review.

Security footage.

Access logs.

Communication records.

Nothing was being overlooked.

Lily sat in the security room beside Marco, watching as footage played across multiple screens.

Hallways.

Entrances.

Blind spots.

"Pause it," she said suddenly.

Marco glanced at her—but didn't question it.

He stopped the footage.

"Go back five seconds."

The video rewound.

Played again.

"There," Lily said.

Marco leaned forward slightly.

"What am I looking at?"

Lily pointed.

"Door 17."

Marco zoomed in.

At first—nothing.

Then—

A flicker.

The door slightly ajar.

Marco frowned.

"That door was supposed to be locked."

Lily's pulse quickened.

"Exactly."

Marco rewound further.

Watched carefully.

Then his expression changed.

"Someone opened it from the inside."

A heavy silence fell between them.

Lily swallowed.

"So… it's true."

Marco didn't look away from the screen.

"Yeah."

His voice was low now.

Dangerous.

"We've got a leak."

Adrian didn't react outwardly when they told him.

But Lily saw it.

The shift.

The way his entire presence seemed to sharpen.

"Who has access to that corridor?" he asked.

Marco pulled up a list.

"Limited personnel. Inner circle only."

Lily's stomach dropped.

"How many?" Adrian pressed.

Marco hesitated for half a second.

"Seven."

Silence.

Seven people.

Seven possible traitors.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

"Bring them in."

The room felt colder than usual.

Seven men stood in a line.

Each one trained.

Each one trusted.

Each one now under suspicion.

Lily stood off to the side, watching.

Her heart pounded harder with every passing second.

Adrian walked slowly in front of them.

Measured steps.

Controlled breathing.

Predatory calm.

"No one leaves this room," he said quietly.

No one moved.

"You all know why you're here."

A few exchanged glances.

Most didn't.

"Someone inside this house betrayed us."

The words landed like a blade.

"And I'm giving you one chance," Adrian continued.

"To speak."

Silence.

Lily's chest tightened.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Adrian nodded once.

"Wrong answer."

The shift was instant.

Marco moved first.

Grabbing one of the men—slamming him hard against the wall.

"Talk," Marco snapped.

"I didn't do anything!" the man protested.

"Then start proving it," Marco growled.

The room erupted into controlled chaos.

Interrogation.

Pressure.

Fear.

Lily watched it all—

Her stomach twisting.

Her hands tightening into fists.

This was Adrian's world.

Raw.

Unfiltered.

Brutal.

And now—

She was standing in the middle of it.

Minutes passed.

Then more.

Still—

Nothing.

Until—

"I know who it is."

The voice cut through everything.

Everyone froze.

Lily's breath caught.

A man stepped forward.

One of the seven.

Adrian's gaze locked onto him.

"Speak."

The man swallowed hard.

Then—

"It's Daniel."

Every head turned.

Another man in the line stiffened.

"That's a lie," Daniel snapped instantly.

The accuser shook his head.

"No—it's not. I saw you. Two nights ago. Near the east wing. You weren't supposed to be there."

Daniel's expression darkened.

"I had orders."

"From who?" Marco demanded.

Daniel hesitated.

That was all it took.

Adrian stepped forward.

Slow.

Deadly.

"From who?" he repeated.

Silence.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"I don't have to answer that."

Big mistake.

Adrian grabbed him.

Fast.

Violent.

Slamming him against the table with enough force to shake the room.

"You do," Adrian said quietly.

The calm in his voice was terrifying.

Lily felt her heart hammering in her chest.

Daniel struggled—but Adrian didn't budge.

"Last chance," Adrian said.

A pause.

Then—

Daniel laughed.

It was wrong.

Out of place.

Unhinged.

"You really think I'd betray you for nothing?" he said.

Adrian's grip tightened.

"For him?" Daniel continued. "You have no idea what's coming."

Lily's stomach dropped.

"Where is he?" Adrian demanded.

Daniel's smile widened slightly.

"Closer than you think."

And then—

Everything went wrong.

A loud explosion rocked the mansion.

The floor shook.

Lights flickered.

Glass shattered somewhere in the distance.

Lily gasped.

"What the hell was that?" Marco barked into his comms.

"West wing breach!" a voice shouted back.

Adrian released Daniel instantly.

"Lock it down!" he ordered.

Too late.

Gunfire erupted.

Screams followed.

Chaos.

Daniel laughed again.

And this time—

Adrian didn't hesitate.

He knocked him out cold.

"Marco—contain him."

Already moving.

Adrian turned to Lily.

"Stay here."

"No."

There was no hesitation this time.

"I'm not staying behind," she said.

Adrian's eyes locked onto hers.

This time—

He didn't argue.

"Then don't fall behind."

They ran.

The mansion was no longer controlled.

It was under attack.

Smoke filled parts of the hallway.

Guards moved fast—some shouting, some firing.

Lily's heart pounded violently as she followed Adrian.

Gunshots echoed closer now.

Too close.

They turned the corner—

And came face to face with it.

Masked men.

Armed.

Inside the mansion.

"Down!" Adrian shouted.

He fired.

The fight exploded instantly.

Lily dropped low, adrenaline surging through her veins.

This wasn't training.

This was war.

Real.

Loud.

Terrifying.

And she was in it.

Right in the middle.
