Chapter 13 - Chapter 13. Ethan’s Regret

The apartment felt strangely quiet.

Ethan Blake sat on the couch staring at the glow of his laptop screen, the faint blue light reflecting in his tired eyes.

Outside the large windows, the city stretched endlessly beneath the night sky, glittering with life.

But inside the apartment, everything felt still.

Too still.

He hadn't noticed the silence at first. For two years, there had been plenty of nights when Alessia wasn't here. She was always busy—running meetings, traveling for business, attending events.

Ethan used to enjoy those quiet evenings.

Now the silence felt… uncomfortable.

Like something important had been removed from the room.

He leaned forward and refreshed the banking page again.

The numbers didn't change.

His jaw tightened.

Transaction Declined.

The message blinked on the screen like it was mocking him.

"That's ridiculous," he muttered.

He clicked another tab.

Another notification appeared.

Payment Failed.

Ethan leaned back into the couch, staring at the ceiling for a moment before exhaling sharply.

Just weeks ago, none of this had been an issue.

Luxury dinners.

Exclusive lounges.

Weekend trips.

Designer clothes.

Private club memberships.

All of it had felt normal.

Effortless.

Now suddenly everything seemed… expensive.

Too expensive.

Ethan closed the laptop and dropped it onto the coffee table.

The sound echoed through the apartment.

He stood up and began pacing slowly across the living room.

"This is insane."

He wasn't broke.

Far from it.

As a business consultant, he made good money.

Comfortable money.

But the lifestyle he had been living recently?

That lifestyle had quietly depended on someone else.

Someone he had apparently underestimated.

Alessia Kane.

The realization made him frown.

For two years, she had been part of his life in ways he hadn't really thought about.

If they went to an expensive restaurant, she often paid without mentioning it.

If they traveled, she handled the reservations.

If he admired something—a watch, a jacket, a bottle of rare whiskey—it sometimes appeared as a gift days later.

She never bragged about it.

Never made a big deal out of it.

At the time, Ethan had simply accepted it.

After all, Alessia was wealthy.

Founder and CEO of Kane Luxe Group.

Money was practically part of her identity.

But now that she wasn't here anymore…

The difference was impossible to ignore.

His phone buzzed on the table.

Ethan grabbed it quickly.

For a split second, hope flickered in his chest.

Maybe it was Alessia.

Maybe she had cooled down.

Maybe she wanted to talk.

But the message on the screen killed that hope immediately.

Credit Card Alert: Payment Declined

Ethan groaned and tossed the phone back onto the couch.

"Unbelievable."

He walked toward the window, staring down at the city.

Somewhere out there, Alessia was probably still working.

She had always been like that.

Focused.

Disciplined.

Always planning something.

Ethan rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

Maybe she was just upset.

That would make sense.

The situation yesterday had been… unfortunate.

Walking into his apartment and finding him with another woman?

Yes, that had been bad timing.

Very bad timing.

But it wasn't like it meant anything serious.

Ethan frowned slightly.

Alessia had taken it too personally.

It had just been a mistake.

People made mistakes in relationships all the time.

The important thing was fixing them.

And he could fix this.

He walked back to the couch and picked up his phone again.

He opened her contact.

Alessia Kane

For a moment he hesitated.

Then he pressed the call button.

The phone rang once.

Then the call ended.

Ethan blinked.

"What?"

He tried again.

This time the call didn't connect.

A message appeared.

Call Failed

He stared at the screen.

Then it hit him.

She had blocked him.

Ethan let out a short laugh.

"That's dramatic."

Blocking him completely?

After two years together?

That felt extreme even for Alessia.

He opened their message thread.

His last message still sat there from yesterday.

Ethan:

You're overreacting. Let's talk.

Below it appeared a small notification.

Message Not Delivered

Ethan sighed and ran a hand through his hair.

Alessia had always been stubborn.

Once she made up her mind, she stuck to it.

But that didn't mean the relationship was over.

Not really.

She just needed time.

Time to calm down.

Time to remember everything they had shared.

Ethan leaned back into the couch again.

Two years.

That wasn't something people threw away overnight.

They had built a life together.

Attended events together.

Traveled together.

Introduced each other to their professional circles.

Those kinds of connections didn't just disappear.

And if Alessia was being honest with herself…

She would realize that too.

Ethan grabbed his phone again and opened a shopping app.

If words wouldn't work, maybe actions would.

Women appreciated effort.

Romantic gestures.

Grand apologies.

Yes.

That was exactly what he needed to do.

He searched for a luxury flower boutique.

Rows of elegant bouquets filled the screen.

Roses.

Tulips.

Orchids.

He scrolled slowly until something caught his eye.

White roses.

Simple.

Beautiful.

Expensive.

Perfect.

Ethan smiled.

He selected the largest bouquet available.

Tomorrow he would go to Kane Luxe Tower.

He would bring the flowers himself.

Look Alessia in the eyes.

Apologize properly.

Explain everything.

Once she saw how serious he was…

She would forgive him.

After all, Alessia had always been practical.

Logical.

She wasn't the type of woman who destroyed a relationship over a single mistake.

At least…

That was what Ethan believed.

He completed the order and leaned back with satisfaction.

Yes.

Tomorrow would fix everything.

He turned off the lights and walked toward the bedroom.

But across the city, Alessia Kane had already closed the door on that chapter of her life.

She simply hadn't told Ethan Blake yet.

And Ethan still believed he was walking toward reconciliation.

Not realizing he might actually be walking toward something very different.

When someone refuses to accept the end of a relationship, is it love…

Or simply the fear of losing what they once benefited from?
