Chapter 17 - Chapter 17. An Unexpected Encounter

The Imperial Galleria was alive with light.

Crystal chandeliers cast golden reflections across polished marble floors while soft music from a live quartet drifted through the grand hall. Conversations flowed between guests dressed in elegant suits and designer gowns, their voices blending into a quiet murmur of wealth and influence.

This was not just a social event.

It was a gathering of power.

Investors, fashion executives, luxury brand owners, and developers filled the space, exchanging pleasantries that often hid serious negotiations.

Near the entrance, Alessia Kane stepped inside.

Her arrival was graceful but understated.

She wore a midnight-black gown designed by Maya Laurent, founder of Laurent Atelier. The dress hugged her silhouette with effortless elegance, the fabric flowing smoothly as she walked.

Delicate gold embroidery traced the edges of the sleeves—Maya's subtle signature.

Her natural afro framed her face beautifully, giving her presence a striking individuality among the polished crowd.

Alessia never dressed loudly.

She didn't need to.

Her confidence carried enough weight on its own.

As CEO and founder of Kane Luxe Group, she had long grown accustomed to spaces like this.

People greeted her as she moved through the hall.

"Good evening, Ms. Kane."

"Pleasure seeing you again."

"Congratulations on your Milan expansion."

Alessia responded politely, offering brief smiles and measured conversation before continuing through the room.

Across the hall, Dominic Vale stood near the bar.

Beside him was Julian Cross, casually holding a glass of champagne while scanning the room.

Julian noticed Dominic's attention shift almost immediately.

He followed his friend's gaze.

And smiled.

"There she is."

Dominic said nothing.

His eyes remained on Alessia as she moved through the crowd.

Calm.

Focused.

Completely self-assured.

Julian leaned lightly against the bar.

"Seeing her in person again makes the report feel very real, doesn't it?"

Dominic took a slow sip of his drink.

"Yes."

Julian had been the one who investigated her.

After the night Alessia had collided with Dominic at the bar and disappeared before he could learn more.

Julian had uncovered everything.

Founder of Kane Luxe Group.

Strategic business leader.

Daughter of Victor Kane, the powerful founder of Kane Entertainment Group.

But despite the powerful family name, the company Alessia ran was entirely her own creation.

Julian studied Dominic carefully.

"You know," he said casually, "most people would have introduced themselves by now."

Dominic's voice remained calm.

"This is not most situations."

Julian chuckled.

"Still observing?"

"Yes."

Across the room, Maya Laurent had just finished speaking with a pair of fashion editors when she spotted Alessia.

Her face lit up instantly.

"There she is."

She excused herself and crossed the room quickly.

"Alessia!"

Alessia turned and smiled slightly.

"Maya."

The two friends embraced briefly.

Maya stepped back to admire the dress.

"You look incredible."

Alessia raised an eyebrow.

"You designed it."

"Exactly," Maya replied proudly. "Which means I'm allowed to admire my own work."

The gown truly was one of Maya's finest creations.

Elegant.

Sharp.

Powerful without being loud.

Alessia glanced down briefly.

"It fits perfectly."

"Of course it does," Maya said with satisfaction. "I designed it specifically for you."

A waiter passed carrying champagne.

Maya grabbed two glasses and handed one to Alessia.

"So," Maya said, scanning the room, "half the fashion world is here tonight."

"And half the investors," Alessia replied calmly.

"Which means this is technically work."

They clinked glasses lightly.

Across the hall, Julian watched them.

"That's Maya Laurent," he said casually. "Owner of Laurent Atelier."

Dominic nodded once.

"I know."

Julian studied Alessia again.

"Your mystery woman certainly has powerful friends."

Dominic didn't respond.

His attention remained quiet but focused.

He wasn't staring.

He was observing.

Noticing small things.

The way people approached Alessia rather than the other way around.

The calm way she listened during conversations.

The ease with which she moved through the room.

Julian noticed Dominic's silence.

"You really are interested."

Dominic's voice remained steady.

"I'm curious."

Julian smirked.

"That word again."

Across the hall, Alessia and Maya continued talking.

"You should come to the studio next week," Maya said. "I want your opinion on the new collection."

"You know I'm not a fashion critic."

"You're honest," Maya replied. "That's better."

Alessia laughed softly.

Moments like this were rare during events.

A brief pause from the constant calculations of business.

After a moment, Alessia glanced around the room again.

Her eyes scanned the guests instinctively.

Investors.

Developers.

Brand founders.

For a moment, her gaze paused.

A familiar face near the bar.

Dominic Vale.

The man she had accidentally collided with weeks earlier.

Recognition flickered briefly in her mind.

But it was distant.

A small memory from a busy night.

She looked away again and continued her conversation.

Across the hall, Julian noticed the brief moment.

"She remembers you."

Dominic shook his head slightly.

"Barely."

Julian smiled.

"That might change."

Dominic didn't respond.

Instead he watched Alessia one more time.

He had not come to Imperial Galleria by accident.

Julian had mentioned she would be attending.

And Dominic had decided to attend as well.

Not to corner her.

Not to impress her.

Simply to allow another encounter to happen naturally.

Because sometimes the most powerful move wasn't pursuit.

It was patience.

Across the room, Alessia felt a strange sense of awareness she couldn't quite explain.

She didn't look back again.

But something about tonight felt… different.

Two people in the same room.

Two paths crossing again.

Neither of them fully aware yet—

That this was only the beginning.
