Chapter 27 - Heiress at the Gala

The gala hall shimmered with soft golden light.

Crystal chandeliers hung from the high ceiling, scattering reflections across polished marble floors. Elegant conversations floated through the room while waiters moved gracefully between guests carrying trays of champagne.

Elena stood near the edge of the grand ballroom, trying not to look overwhelmed.

She had attended performances before.

But this event felt different.

This wasn't just a concert hall filled with music lovers.

This was a gathering of powerful people.

Business leaders.

Politicians.

Influential families.

The kind of people whose names appeared in newspapers.

And tonight, she was somehow part of it.

Elena adjusted the sleeve of her dark evening dress and quietly observed the crowd.

Her performance earlier that night had gone well. The applause had been warm and genuine, but once the music ended, she suddenly felt out of place among the glittering conversations around her.

Her eyes instinctively searched the room.

Adrian.

He had brought her here.

But after greeting a few guests, he disappeared into a conversation with several powerful-looking men across the hall.

Even from a distance, he stood out.

Tall.

Composed.

Commanding attention without trying.

The quiet boy from the academy had become someone people listened to carefully.

Elena was still watching him when a smooth voice spoke beside her.

"Beautiful performance."

She turned.

The woman standing there was striking.

Tall and elegant, with perfectly styled dark hair and a calm, confident expression. Her silver dress caught the light with every movement, and there was something unmistakably powerful about the way she carried herself.

Not just wealthy.

Important.

Elena offered a polite smile.

"Thank you."

The woman studied her carefully for a moment.

"You're Elena Rivera."

It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

The woman extended her hand gracefully.

"Seraphina Orlov."

The name landed with quiet weight.

Elena felt a faint jolt of recognition.

Of course she knew the name.

Seraphina Orlov.

The heiress whose family name appeared beside Adrian's in business headlines.

The woman who had once been rumored to be his future wife.

Elena shook her hand politely.

"It's nice to meet you."

Seraphina's smile was calm.

"Yes."

But her eyes were sharp.

"I've heard a great deal about you."

Elena raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Hopefully good things."

Seraphina tilted her head.

"Mostly curious things."

She glanced briefly across the room toward Adrian.

He was still speaking with the group of businessmen.

But Elena noticed something interesting.

Even from that distance…

Adrian's eyes briefly shifted toward them.

Watching.

Seraphina noticed it too.

Her smile deepened slightly.

"So," she said lightly, returning her attention to Elena, "you and Adrian seem… close."

Elena chose her words carefully.

"We knew each other years ago."

"At the academy."

"Yes."

Seraphina nodded slowly.

"I remember hearing about that."

Something in her tone made Elena pause.

Not hostile.

But calculating.

"You play beautifully," Seraphina continued. "Adrian has always had a strange relationship with music."

Elena blinked.

"You know about that?"

Seraphina gave a small amused laugh.

"Elena, our families have known each other for decades."

Of course she did.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Seraphina added softly,

"You should be careful."

Elena frowned slightly.

"Careful?"

Seraphina's expression remained elegant and composed.

"Adrian lives in a world that is not always… gentle."

Elena held her gaze.

"I'm aware."

Seraphina studied her for a moment longer.

As if deciding something.

Then she smiled again.

"Well."

She picked up a glass of champagne from a passing tray.

"I suppose we'll see how long you remain aware."

Before Elena could respond, a familiar voice spoke behind them.

"Seraphina."

Adrian.

He stepped beside Elena, his presence instantly changing the atmosphere.

Seraphina turned toward him calmly.

"Adrian."

For a brief second, the three of them stood in silence.

Two powerful worlds.

And Elena standing directly between them.

Adrian's eyes flicked toward Elena briefly.

Checking.

Then he looked back at Seraphina.

"What are you doing here?"

Seraphina took a slow sip of champagne.

"I was invited."

Her gaze shifted between them again.

"And I was curious."

Adrian's voice cooled slightly.

"About what?"

Seraphina smiled faintly.

"About the pianist who managed to capture your attention after all these years."

Elena suddenly felt like the entire room had become much quieter.

Adrian's expression didn't change.

But the tension in the air definitely did.

And Elena realized something very clearly.

The night had just become far more complicated than a simple dinner.
