For a moment, no one spoke.
The music from the orchestra floated softly through the ballroom, but around the three of them, the atmosphere had grown noticeably still.
Seraphina swirled the champagne in her glass with effortless grace.
"I didn't realize my curiosity would cause such tension," she said lightly.
Adrian's expression remained calm, though his voice carried a quiet firmness.
"There isn't any tension."
Seraphina's lips curved slightly.
"Of course."
Her eyes drifted toward Elena again, studying her as if trying to understand something.
"You played beautifully tonight," she said.
"Thank you," Elena replied politely.
"I can see why the audience was so captivated."
Elena nodded slightly, unsure if the compliment was genuine or simply polite.
Seraphina glanced at Adrian.
"You've always had an interesting taste in music."
Adrian didn't respond.
Instead, his attention shifted briefly to Elena.
"Have you eaten yet?" he asked.
The sudden change of subject caught Elena off guard.
"No, not yet."
"Then we should leave."
Seraphina raised an eyebrow.
"So soon?"
Adrian's gaze remained steady.
"Elena has already fulfilled her part of the evening."
Elena blinked slightly.
"My part?"
"You performed," Adrian said simply. "You don't need to stay if you're tired."
Seraphina gave a quiet laugh.
"That sounds suspiciously protective."
Adrian ignored the comment.
But Elena noticed something subtle.
His hand had moved slightly behind her.
Not touching her.
Just close enough that anyone watching would see the gesture.
A quiet signal.
Seraphina noticed it too.
Her sharp eyes flicked to his hand, then back to his face.
"Interesting," she murmured.
Elena suddenly felt very aware of the unspoken conversation happening between them.
Adrian spoke calmly.
"We're leaving."
Seraphina tilted her head.
"You say that as if it's not a suggestion."
"It isn't."
Elena almost laughed at how direct he sounded.
Seraphina studied him for a moment before setting her glass aside.
"Well," she said smoothly, "I suppose I've interrupted your evening long enough."
She turned toward Elena again.
"It was lovely meeting you, Miss Rivera."
Elena gave a polite nod.
"You too."
Seraphina's smile returned, elegant and composed.
"I look forward to seeing you again."
There was something about the way she said it that made Elena suspect she meant it in more ways than one.
Then Seraphina turned and walked gracefully back into the crowd, disappearing among the glittering guests.
Only when she was gone did Elena release a small breath.
"That was intense."
Adrian didn't disagree.
"Yes."
Elena glanced at him.
"You two seem to have… history."
"Business history."
"That sounds complicated."
"It is."
They stood in silence for a moment before Elena spoke again.
"You didn't have to rush us out like that."
Adrian looked down at her.
"I did."
"Why?"
His gaze moved briefly toward the direction Seraphina had gone.
Then back to Elena.
"She was observing you."
Elena folded her arms.
"She introduced herself. That's normal."
Adrian shook his head slightly.
"Seraphina doesn't do anything without a reason."
The seriousness in his voice made Elena pause.
"You think she was testing me?"
"Yes."
Elena frowned.
"That seems dramatic."
Adrian's expression softened just slightly.
"It isn't."
He gestured toward the ballroom doors.
"Come on."
Elena followed him as they began walking toward the exit.
The noise of the gala slowly faded behind them as they stepped into the quieter hallway outside.
After a few steps, Elena glanced at him again.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"That thing you did back there."
"What thing?"
She smiled slightly.
"The possessive bodyguard stance."
Adrian frowned faintly.
"I wasn't doing that."
"You absolutely were."
"I was making a point."
Elena laughed softly.
"That's exactly what I mean."
They reached the entrance where the cool night air drifted through the open doors.
Adrian paused beside her.
"You didn't seem uncomfortable."
"With Seraphina?"
"Yes.
Elena thought for a moment.
"She's intimidating," she admitted.
Adrian didn't look surprised.
"But," Elena added, "I've met worse people in orchestra competitions."
That earned the smallest hint of a smile from him.
As they stepped outside together, Elena realized something strange.
Back inside the ballroom, surrounded by powerful strangers, she had felt completely out of place.
But standing here beside Adrian…
She felt oddly calm.
Even if she still wasn't sure why he was looking at her the way he was tonight.
Or why that look felt so difficult to ignore.
