The hallway grew quiet again after Kai's laughter faded.
For a moment, the three of them simply stood there.
Elena shifted slightly against the wall, still trying to process everything that had just happened. Adrian's presence alone already made the air feel heavier, but with Kai around, the conversation had taken an even stranger turn.
Kai glanced between them like someone watching an interesting scene unfold.
"Well," he said casually, "this reunion is more awkward than I expected."
Elena gave him a small smile.
"Is that your polite way of saying we look uncomfortable?"
"Not at all," Kai replied. "You look curious."
He nodded toward Adrian.
"He looks like he's thinking too much."
Adrian sighed softly.
"Kai."
"Yes?"
"Stop talking."
Kai grinned, clearly not offended.
"I'll stop if you finally ask the question you've been thinking about for the last five minutes."
Elena looked at Adrian, surprised.
"You've been thinking about something?"
Adrian's expression remained calm, but there was a brief pause before he answered.
"Yes."
Elena waited.
He didn't say anything else.
Kai shook his head.
"Incredible."
"What is?" Elena asked.
"The man runs companies worth billions," Kai said, gesturing toward Adrian, "but asking someone to dinner apparently requires intense strategic planning."
Elena blinked.
"Dinner?"
Adrian finally spoke.
"Elena."
She looked at him.
"Would you have dinner with me tonight?"
The question was simple.
Direct.
But something about the way he asked it made Elena hesitate.
It wasn't the invitation itself.
It was everything behind it.
The memories of the academy.
The years that had passed.
The quiet tension still hanging between them.
Kai leaned casually against the wall, watching Elena with clear amusement.
"No pressure," he said. "But he rarely asks twice."
Adrian ignored him.
Elena let out a small breath.
"This feels sudden."
"It is," Adrian admitted.
"Why now?"
His gaze held hers steadily.
"Because you're here."
The answer was so straightforward that it caught her off guard.
Elena looked down for a moment, considering.
Part of her was curious.
Another part of her was cautious.
The boy she once knew had become someone powerful and difficult to read.
And yet…
Standing here now, she could still see glimpses of the quiet listener who used to sit in the shadows of the music hall.
Kai checked his watch dramatically.
"I feel like I should start a countdown."
Adrian didn't look at him.
"Kai."
"Right. Silence."
Elena laughed softly despite herself.
"You two are unbelievable."
Kai smiled.
"We hear that a lot."
She looked back at Adrian.
"If I say yes… where exactly are we going?"
"A restaurant."
Elena raised an eyebrow.
"Very specific."
"You'll like it."
"That sounds confident."
Adrian's expression softened just slightly.
"I remember what you like."
The words lingered in the air longer than expected.
Elena felt a strange warmth rise in her chest.
He remembered.
After all these years.
Kai noticed the change in her expression and smirked quietly to himself.
"Well," he said, pushing away from the wall, "I'll leave you two to finalize the details before Adrian starts analyzing the situation again."
He gave Elena a polite nod.
"It was nice finally meeting you."
Then he turned and walked down the hallway, leaving them alone.
Silence returned once more.
Elena looked at Adrian.
"You planned that, didn't you?"
Adrian's brow furrowed slightly.
"Planned what?"
"Sending him away."
"I didn't."
She studied his face.
For someone so powerful, he looked strangely patient standing there waiting for her answer.
Elena finally sighed.
"Alright."
Adrian waited.
"I'll come to dinner."
For the first time since their conversation began, something shifted in Adrian's expression.
Not a smile exactly.
But close.
"I'll pick you up at seven."
Elena pushed herself away from the wall.
"You assume I'll let you."
Adrian met her gaze calmly.
"You will."
She shook her head with a small laugh.
"You're very confident."
"Yes."
"And if I change my mind?"
His answer came without hesitation.
"I'll convince you not to."
Elena stared at him for a second before smiling.
The boy who used to hide in the shadows had definitely changed.
But somehow…
He was still the same person who listened to her music like it mattered more than anything else.
And for reasons she didn't fully understand yet…
She had agreed to dinner.
