Back upstairs, Emily tried to focus on her work.
But Sophia's words kept echoing in her mind.
"Girls like you usually end up getting hurt."
Emily shook her head.
"Why am I even thinking about that?"
Just then Alexander stepped out of his office.
"You disappeared."
Emily looked up.
"Just getting coffee."
Alexander narrowed his eyes slightly.
"You look distracted."
Emily quickly shook her head.
"I'm fine."
Alexander studied her for a moment.
But he didn't press further.
Instead, he handed her a stack of documents.
"Prepare these contracts for the board meeting tomorrow."
Emily stared at the thick folder.
"This is a lot."
Alexander raised an eyebrow.
"You've handled worse."
Emily sighed.
"True."
For the rest of the day she buried herself in work.
Yet every once in a while—
She noticed Alexander glancing at her.
Like he knew something was wrong.
