Chapter 37 - Chapter 37:Borrowed monsters..

The roof beneath them groaned.

Half-collapsed beams burned around the edges, casting long orange shadows over shattered concrete. Beyond the warehouse, the coast was chaos, boats fleeing, screams fading into distance, thunder rolling overhead.

But here

Everything narrowed.

Sam.

The Hierophant.

Three elite vampires.

And the surviving swarm circling below.

The armored elite moved first.

Fast.

Too fast for something so bulky.

He lunged with both claws extended.

Sam twisted sideways and raised his forearm to block

CLANG

The impact rang like metal striking stone.

Sam blinked.

"…right."

His new traits.

Without thinking, he activated them.

Minor shapeshifting altered the density of his muscles. Bone subtly repositioned. Tendons tightened. Skin thickened.

Then he layered Stone Skin Resistance with Weak Earth Affinity.

Mineral dust from the shattered roof rose and fused across his forearms.

His limbs darkened into rough, armored gauntlets.

The elite vampire recoiled.

"Ugh! He's doing wizard grossness!"

Sam punched him in the jaw.

BOOM

The vampire flew through a pillar.

The dramatic vampire clapped excitedly.

"Ooooh! Punch encore!"

Then he blurred forward with twin daggers.

Sam ducked the first slash

Second blade cut across his ribs.

Blood spilled.

Sam hissed.

The vampire licked the blade.

"Sharp enough."

Sam's eyes narrowed.

Minor shapeshift triggered again.

His shoulder joint loosened unnaturally.

He bent backward farther than a normal human should, dodging the next strike by inches.

The vampire froze.

"…that was upsetting."

Sam grabbed his wrist.

Lightning surged.

The dagger user screamed as current ran through his arm.

Sam headbutted him.

Then slammed a stone-coated knee into his stomach.

Ribs snapped audibly.

He threw him off the roof.

The third elite, thin and pale, never stopped moving.

He circled like mist, looking for angles.

"Too many tricks," he muttered.

Sam planted his feet.

Used earth magic.

The cracked rooftop beneath him rippled.

Chunks of concrete rose into floating plates.

The pale vampire blinked.

"…that's illegal."

Sam kicked the slabs one after another.

Stone projectiles launched like cannonballs.

The vampire dodged the first two,

Third crushed his leg.

Fourth shattered his shoulder.

Sam was already there.

Sword in one hand.

Stone fist in the other.

He struck once with the fist

Then finished with the blade.

Above them, the Hierophant watched from broken rafters, smoking flesh regenerating slowly.

His voice came smooth again.

"You adapt quickly."

Sam turned.

Bloodied.

Breathing harder.

Arms partially armored in stone.

Lightning crawling through the cracks.

"…I learn from ugly things."

The Hierophant sighed.

"Teenagers."

Then his body swelled again.

Wings widening.

Horns lengthening.

The bat-goat chimera grew larger, feeding on the blood he'd stolen.

Sam felt the pressure shift.

This one was stronger now.

Below, remaining vampires began climbing the warehouse walls to aid their lord.

Too many.

Too soon.

Sam clenched both fists.

Stone armor spread further up his arms.

Lightning storm clouds gathered tighter overhead.

His body was becoming a patchwork of every enemy he had survived.

Human.

Mutant.

Vampire.

Wizard.

Rainicorn.

Goblin.

All forged into one fighter.

The Hierophant grinned with too many teeth.

"Come then, little collector."

Sam rolled his neck once.

"…gladly."

Then both launched at the same time.

The Hierophant descended like a nightmare to meet the in coming Sam...

Wings tearing the air.

Horns lowered.

Claws wide.

His laugh echoed across the burning harbor.

"Die dramatically!"

Sam stood still.

Too still.

Lightning coiled around him.

Then mana joined it.

Pure mana wrapped his body in a dense shimmering layer while storm energy coursed over it like living armor. Blue-white arcs ran across his shoulders, chest, legs, face.

Every nerve sharpened.

Every muscle primed.

The remaining vampires hesitated.

Even the Hierophant felt something wrong.

But he was already committed.

Too close.

Too fast.

Sam grinned.

At the last second

He opened the system.

And dumped every available stat point into Strength.

A violent surge tore through his frame.

Muscles compressed.

Bones reinforced.

Power flooded his limbs so suddenly the ground cracked beneath him.

The Hierophant's eyes widened.

"…what?"

Sam moved first.

He stepped inside the dive, caught the giant chimera by the throat and one wing-joint

Then threw.

Not pushed.

Not struck.

Thrown.

The Hierophant became a missile.

Sam roared and released storm energy through both arms at the same time.

Lightning poured into the vampire lord mid-flight, frying him as he screamed through the air.

"Aaaagh! This is unfair!"

He smashed across the docks..

Through debris..

Straight into a small shack near the coast.

The same shack Elena and the kids had briefly used earlier.

There was one tiny problem.

The Hierophant had not been invited in.

For one stunned second, nothing happened.

Then ancient vampire law took hold.

The shack glowed faintly.

The Hierophant blinked.

"…oh no."

He exploded into glittering ash and sparkling smoke.

Gone.

Sam stared.

The remaining vampires stared.

One whispered:

"…house rules…"

Another screamed:

"RUN!"

Sam didn't let them.

He became a streak of thunder.

Blitzing through the remaining swarm.

One punch shattered torsos.

One kick launched bodies into the sea.

Lightning lances pinned elites to walls.

Static fields froze runners in place.

Mana bursts erased clusters trying to flee underground.

In less than two minutes..

It was over.

The harbor fell silent except for fire and waves.

Ash drifted through the night.

Sam stood alone, breathing hard.

Then

DING DING DING

System notifications flooded his vision.

Then closed everything.

No celebration.

Only one thought.

Vault.

He ran.

He became a flash across the ruined streets.

Doors shattered open as he passed buildings.

Wind spiraled behind him.

Within moments he reached the bank.

He grabbed the vault door and tore it free.

Inside

Elena shielded the children instinctively.

Then saw him.

Alive.

Covered in ash and blood and lightning.

The kids screamed happily and ran first.

"Sam!"

He caught them both in a hug.

Elena followed slower, tears already falling.

"…you came back."

Sam pulled her close with one arm.

"…told you I'd be back."

Then he placed a hand gently on her stomach.

Warm.

Safe.

Alive.

Outside, the night still smoked.

Inside the vault

For one quiet moment

The storm was home.
