Episode: "Hold the Line"
The reunion lasted only moments.
There wasn't time for tears.
There wasn't time for explanations.
There was only sunset.
And the warning ticking inside Sam's mind.
Preparing Them
Sam moved like a blur.
He grabbed bags, crates, blankets, tools, everything Elena and the children had packed and relocated it in bursts of lightning-fast motion. Survivors around the docks gasped each time he vanished and reappeared.
One second beside the boats.
Next second halfway down the street with supplies stacked neatly.
Then back again.
The children stared wide-eyed.
"Sam's faster now…"
"He looks stronger too…"
Even Elena could see it.
His shoulders broader.
His eyes sharper.
The calm intensity around him deeper than before.
But beneath it all,
He still looked at them gently.
That hadn't changed.
He led them quickly inland through cracked streets until he found a half-standing bank building. The front was damaged, but the underground vault remained mostly intact.
Sam walked to the giant steel door.
Placed one hand on it.
Pulled.
Muscles tightened.
Lightning flickered through his arm.
With a groan of twisted metal, the massive vault door tore free and slammed to the floor.
The children's mouths dropped open.
"…that's so cool…"they said in unison..
Sam tested the hinges, interior space, emergency vents, and possible exits. Satisfied, he nodded.
"Good enough."
He brought blankets and supplies inside.
Then turned to them.
"Stay here no matter what happens ok..!."
Elena grabbed his wrist.
"…Sam, wait.. ."
He looked at her.
For a second, the chaos outside disappeared.
He knelt and placed a soft kiss on her stomach.
His child.
Then stood and hugged both children tightly.
He crouched before Daniel and held out the Demon Eye Sword.
The boy hesitated.
"This is too big for Sam.. …"
"You don't need to swing it," Sam said calmly. "Just hold it. It hurts monsters."
He placed the sword carefully in the boy's hands.
"Protect your mother and sister."
Daniel swallowed hard.
"…I will... I promise... "as he puffs out his chest...
Sam ruffled his hair once.
Then he looked at Elena again.
So much to say.
No time to say any of it.
She stepped forward and kissed him quickly.
"Come back."
"I will."
He stepped outside.
Lifted the vault door back into place.
And sealed them in darkness and safety.
Sam ran.
Back through ruined streets.
Back to the docks.
The final edge of sunlight slipped beneath the horizon.
Shadows lengthened instantly.
The ocean darkened.
And then
From every sewer grate, tunnel mouth, storm drain, and shattered underground entrance
Footsteps.
Fast.
Light.
Many.
Thousands of tapping sounds like claws on stone.
The survivors on the docks froze.
Sam turned slowly toward the sewer openings.
Lightning gathered around him.
Then he roared
"GET ON THE BOATS! NOW!"
Panic exploded across the harbor.
People rushed.
Ropes snapped.
Wood groaned.
Children screamed.
And from the darkness emerged the swarm.
Pale figures with glowing eyes.
Leaping forms.
Sharp teeth.
Elegant monsters and feral feeders alike.
At their center, walking calmly as if attending a dinner invitation,
The Hierophant.
His expression was almost amused.
"…ah," he said softly. "The storm."
Sam didn't answer.
Didn't posture.
Didn't negotiate.
He raised one hand to the sky.
Clouds that had been gathering for hours churned violently overhead.
Wind slammed across the harbor.
The first line of vampires lunged..
Sam brought his hand down.
BOOOOOM, CRACK!!
A colossal bolt of lightning speared from the clouds and vaporized the front ranks instantly.
Screams tore through the night.
He moved his arm again..
Another strike.
Then another.
Then three in rapid succession.
The docks flashed white again and again as elite vampires were blasted apart mid-sprint, thrown into walls, burned to ash, hurled into the sea.
The survivors on the boats stared in disbelief.
It looked less like a battle,
And more like nature itself had declared war.
The Hierophant's smile faded.
"…interesting."
But the swarm kept coming.
Hundreds more poured from below.
Sam stepped forward into the stormlight.
Bleeding skies above.
Ocean behind.
Humanity fleeing.
And between them all
One teenage boy with lightning in his veins.
Holding the line....
The coast had become a nightmare of shadows and flashing light.
Smoke rolled across the docks.
Boats pushed desperately into dark water.
Survivors cried out to one another through panic and thunder.
And in the middle of it all
Sam fought alone.
The vampire swarm changed tactics.
No longer charging mindlessly.
Now they moved with intelligence.
Some rushed from the front.
Others climbed broken buildings and leapt from above.
Several stayed back, hurling debris and forcing Sam to divide his attention.
They had learned.
Sam ducked under one claw swipe, cut another across the chest, then blasted three more with a short-range mana burst.
But every second he spent fighting grunts
More slipped past.
More spread outward.
His breathing sharpened.
"…annoying."
Then he felt it.
A presence above.
He looked up.
The Hierophant had changed.
His elegant humanoid shape was gone.
Now he was a towering bat-goat chimera, wings broad and leathery, horns curling back from a narrow skull, eyes glowing like coals. He circled high above the battlefield, letting the lesser vampires die below.
Watching.
Waiting.
Planning.
The creature's voice drifted downward, amused.
"Such admirable effort."
He banked sharply and vanished behind smoke.
Sam's eyes narrowed.
"…coward."
A cluster of elite vampires lunged together.
He blocked one strike, kicked another away, but a third slashed across his shoulder. Blood sprayed.
More came.
Tactical.
Relentless.
They pinned him in place.
And then
Screams from the harbor.
Sam turned.
Too late.
The Hierophant had dropped onto a half-loaded boat. Survivors scattered in terror. His jaws opened unnaturally wide, fangs sinking into two people at once.
Their bodies withered in seconds.
Dry.
Empty.
Dead.
He tossed them aside like trash.
The chimera laughed.
"Delicious."
Something in Sam snapped.
The air changed.
Every vampire on the field felt it.
The storm above went silent.
Then violently still.
Sam planted one foot.
Mana surged through every channel in his body, mixing with lightning until blue-white energy wrapped him like burning armor.
His voice came low.
"…you picked the wrong night."
He slammed his hand into the ground.
And pointed upward.
The clouds answered.
A bolt descended
No.
A pillar of wrath.
It crashed from sky to earth, wider than three buildings, swallowing half the battlefield in blinding white.
KRAAAAAA-BOOOOOM
The docks shattered.
Stone liquefied.
Sand became glass.
Hundreds of vampires vanished instantly.
Others were thrown screaming into the sea.
Even far above, the Hierophant was caught by the edge of it. One wing scorched black. Flesh burned from part of his face.
He shrieked in fury.
"My skin!"
Sam was already moving.
He launched upward using minor flight and lightning propulsion, rising like a missile.
The Hierophant barely turned in time.
Sam slammed into him midair.
They crashed through smoke and spiraled downward.
Sam locked onto his torso and activated Static Field Overload.
Electric arcs exploded across the chimera's body.
The Hierophant spasmed violently.
"Aaagh! Insolent child!"
Sam gritted his teeth.
"Drink this."
They smashed into the roof of a warehouse, caving it in.
Dust burst upward.
The Hierophant kicked free, wings beating wildly.
Before Sam could press the attack
Three elite vampires landed around their lord.
One wore broken armor and hissed through missing teeth.
"Master, retreat!"
Another glared at Sam.
"You burn too bright, boy."
The third sniffed the air dramatically.
"He smells… angry."
The Hierophant, half-charred and twitching from electricity, straightened with offended dignity.
"I am aware."
Sam landed opposite them, lightning crawling across his arms.
Typical absurdity in the middle of carnage.
He stared.
"…are all vampires weird?"
The armored elite pointed.
"Kill him!"
The dramatic one gasped.
"So rude."
Then all three attacked at once.
Behind them, surviving swarm members regrouped in the burning dark.
Ahead of them stood Sam.
Wounded.
Enraged.
And no longer holding back.
The night itself seemed to hesitate.
