Night settled over Wizard City like a velvet curtain.
The city's upper districts remained lively. Floating lanterns drifted overhead. Apprentice wizards argued over spell formulas in cafés. Strange magical creatures wandered the streets with little concern for what happened below.
But beneath the bright avenues...
Wizard City changed.
The deeper one descended, the fewer smiles remained.
The shops became quieter.
The buildings older.
The magic darker.
Knowledge was traded here.
So were curses.
So were lives.
The elite vampire pulled its hood lower as it entered the district known among smugglers simply as the Underbelly.
Its enhanced hearing sifted through dozens of conversations.
"...forbidden scroll of actual death ..."
"...possession ritual of vomiting wraiths ..."
"...artifact smuggling..."
"...wizard bounty..."
"As expected.. nothing useful." the vampire thought..
Then
Laughter spilled from a weathered tavern whose sign hung crookedly above the entrance.
The vampire paused.
Several voices.
Drunk.
Relaxed.
Loose tongues.
Exactly what it wanted.
It slipped inside without drawing attention.
The tavern smelled of smoke, old wood, enchanted alcohol, and burnt herbs.
A troll bartender polished cracked glasses while pretending not to notice the questionable clientele.
Mercenary mages.
Artifact thieves.
Hex dealers.
Independent bounty hunters.
The vampire selected the darkest corner and quietly listened.
For several minutes...
Nothing.
Then one nervous voice rose above the others.
"...I'm telling you man , I don't care how much they offer me next time..."
"...I'm never taking another bounty involving that crazy lightning freak."
The vampire's attention sharpened.
A blue-skinned shapeshifter sat with three companions, gripping a mug tightly enough to crack it.
One companion laughed.
" aaarh.. You always like to exaggerate."
The shapeshifter shook his head violently.
"No!"
"You weren't there!"
"We surrounded him!" the shapeshifter said...
"We matched him!"
"We almost had him!"
His breathing quickened as old memories surfaced.
"He was bleeding everywhere like crazy ..."
"We tore him apart..."
"...one of us even ripped off his arm during the chaos ."
Several nearby patrons glanced over.
The vampire remained perfectly still.
An arm...
Interesting.
One of the listeners frowned.
"So then why are you still alive and you're crew isn't ?"
The shapeshifter swallowed.
"Because everything after that went wrong."
His hands trembled.
"He just..."
"...kept fighting through the pain , killing all of us.. The boss told me to escape with the arm before everything crashed down.. ."
Another wizard leaned forward.
"I heard he controls lightning."
The shapeshifter laughed nervously.
"Lightning?"
"I wish that was all."
"He covered himself in mana and stuff ."
"He fought like a swordsman."
"Used some kind of telekinesis."
"Earth magic too, I saw it on his arms when he punched the head off one us and he has some kind of blood-draining spell."
"He even changed his body during the fight but not like us though ."
The vampire's eyes narrowed beneath the hood.
Body alteration...
The conversation continued.
One mercenary scratched his beard.
"So what happened after the building crashed down ?"
The shapeshifter looked toward the floor.
"We lost."
"...everyone left died, even the boss ."
Silence settled over the table.
"but I managed to escape with the arm . ."
"You sold it or something ?" one asked
"No."
"The original contract changed."
"They paid me extra."
"For delivering the arm..."
"...to some creepy cult beneath Wizard City."
The vampire almost stopped breathing.
A cult.
Not ordinary bounty hunters.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
One of the drinkers frowned.
"What would they want with an arm?"
The shapeshifter shrugged.
"I didn't ask."
"I like being alive guys ."
"They looked..."
He shivered.
"...wrong."
"Candles everywhere."
"Strange cube."
"Lots of strange chanting."
"I took my money and left, fast... ."
The vampire had heard enough.
It quietly stood.
No one noticed.
As it reached the doorway, it remembered that he had seen the lightning wizard with both arms at the coast during that fight.
"He grew it back!" he realized..
The vampire left immediately.
Outside
Its thoughts raced.
Regeneration.
Multiple magical disciplines.
Adaptive abilities.
Lightning.
Storms.
Body alteration.
Blood magic.
Now regeneration.
This was no ordinary human.
The Vampire King needed this information immediately.
If delivered personally...
Perhaps...
Promotion.
Perhaps even recognition within the Court itself.
Without another glance toward the tavern, the elite vampire disappeared back into the shadows, already planning the fastest route through the underground tunnels.
Deeper Still...
Far beneath Wizard City...
Beyond abandoned foundations...
Beyond forgotten catacombs...
Past doors sealed centuries ago...
The cult continued its work.
The chamber had transformed dramatically.
Where once there had been a simple ritual hall now stood an enormous magical array stretching across the entire cavern floor.
Hundreds of runes glowed in concentric circles.
Thousands of tiny symbols continuously shifted position like living script.
The half-finished stasis cube floated silently at the center.
It no longer appeared incomplete.
It breathed.
Slowly.
Almost imperceptibly.
Like something asleep.
Around it stood dozens of hooded cultists.
None spoke.
Only chanted.
Ancient syllables echoed through the chamber in perfect rhythm.
Their voices blended into one continuous drone.
The cult leader stepped toward a raised altar.
Resting upon it...
Sam's severed arm.
Preserved perfectly.
Lightning still flickered faintly beneath the skin.
The leader smiled.
"Remarkable..."
"No decay."
"No mana loss."
"The connection remains intact."
He raised both hands.
The chanting intensified.
Runes beneath the arm awakened.
Golden light surrounded it.
Then
The arm began dissolving.
Not into ash.
Not into dust.
Into countless microscopic particles of living mana.
The leader watched with satisfaction.
"Excellent."
The glowing particles rose gently into the air before drifting toward an enormous scroll suspended above the ritual.
The scroll unfurled by itself.
Its surface was completely covered in impossibly complex sealing formulas.
Each particle entered a different symbol.
The symbols changed immediately.
Growing brighter.
Sharper.
More complete.
A younger cultist stared in fascination.
"...we're rewriting the seal."
An elder nodded.
"Not rewriting."
"Personalizing."
Another added quietly,
"The arm provides identity."
"The seal now recognizes only one target."
"The Lightning Wizard."
The younger cultist hesitated.
"...if he changes?"
The elder smiled.
"He evolves."
"So..."
"...the seal evolves with him."
The younger wizard's eyes widened.
"Impossible."
"No."
The elder looked toward the glowing scroll.
"Merely expensive."
The cult leader placed one hand upon the nearly completed stasis cube.
Its surface rippled.
Inside...
For just an instant...
A human silhouette appeared.
Then vanished.
The leader's expression remained calm.
"Synchronization..."
"Ninety-one percent."
One of the attendants approached.
"The arm has almost completely converted."
The leader nodded.
"Continue."
The chanting resumed.
Faster now.
The last fragments of Sam's arm dissolved into brilliant streams of light before disappearing into the scroll.
One by one...
The remaining empty symbols filled.
The entire chamber trembled.
The cube responded.
Its edges became perfectly defined.
Smooth.
Flawless.
Ancient.
The leader closed his eyes.
"...beautiful."
He could already imagine it.
The Lightning Wizard trapped within.
Unable to move.
Unable to grow.
Unable to interfere.
For centuries if necessary.
The cultists around him lowered their heads.
Their work was approaching completion.
Far away, Sam continued walking with Elena and the children, completely unaware that the ritual was entering its final stages.
Every step he took toward his future...
Brought him closer...
To a prison already learning the shape of his soul.
