Chapter 1 - Chapter one- The Night the world Crumbled

Peter Lim stepped onto the balcony of his penthouse and gazed down at the city sprawled beneath him like a living map. Lights shimmered off glass towers, streetlights traced the avenues in gold, and the river cut through the metropolis like a silver ribbon. The city had always belonged to him, or at least he liked to think so. Every building, every corner, every deal carried his influence. Wealth, power, control—they were his, absolute and unquestioned.

He held a glass of rare scotch, letting the burn roll down his throat. It reminded him he was alive and untouchable. Inside, the penthouse was alive with music, laughter, and the clink of crystal. Guests moved through the space in elegant waves, unaware that tonight would become a memory of terror. Peter watched them with a faint smile. They thought they understood power and influence, but they only saw the surface. He had built his empire on strategy, charm, and risk. Every skyscraper in his portfolio, every yacht in his marina, every private jet in his hangar—all carried the imprint of his vision.

Kael walked by the grand staircase, his gaze sweeping the room. "The wine looks overstocked," he said calmly.

Peter raised a brow. "Appearances matter more than inventory. You know that."

Kael said nothing and returned to his silent vigil. His attention was everywhere, noticing the angles, the exits, the people. That was why Peter trusted him.

Nyx crouched near the DJ booth, her tablet alive with a thousand lines of data. Cameras, alarms, social feeds. Her focus was absolute. The guests did not see her, but Peter did. She was indispensable.

Elara glided past in silver silk, her eyes bright but holding a hint of unease. "Peter, be careful tonight," she whispered, brushing his arm.

"I always am," he said, letting calm mask the tension in his chest.

The first sound came quietly, almost a note out of tune. A small pop, the clink of a glass. Peter glanced toward the balcony. Guests paused, uncertain, eyes darting. Then came a second pop, louder.

Then a sharp crack that split the music in two. Laughter turned into gasps, a scream cut across the room. A woman fell near the balcony, crimson spreading across her white dress.

"Get down!" Kael shouted, yanking Peter and Elara toward the service corridor.

Chaos erupted. Smoke rolled in through the balcony doors, carrying the acrid sting of chemicals.

Guests tripped over one another, screaming and stumbling across shattered furniture. Chandeliers swayed as bullets cracked against the walls. Music distorted into a haunting echo beneath the sound of panic. Peter's stomach tightened. He had no idea who was attacking or why.

Varek covered their backs, silent and precise. Seraphine disappeared into the crowd, shepherding terrified guests toward exits. Elias smiled calmly, his charm now a tool of survival, guiding frightened people to safety. Every member of his team moved with purpose, but even their skill could not erase the panic that had taken hold.

Peter's mind raced. He scanned the grand staircase and glimpsed a shadow moving behind a column. He froze. Was it a threat or another guest caught in the chaos? His instincts screamed danger, muscles tensed.

The team reached the maintenance shaft, the walls cold against their skin. Bullets ricocheted somewhere above, echoing through the corridors. The penthouse, the empire, the life he had built—everything seemed fragile now.

Nyx's voice crackled in his ear. "They are monitoring us. Our escape routes are compromised."

Peter clenched his fists. "Then we move faster. Panic is exactly what they want."

They navigated the shafts, each step amplifying tension. The air smelled of dust, damp, and smoke. Every creak, every shuffle, every distant siren heightened their senses. Peter could feel the heat of adrenaline, the icy grip of fear.

At the end of the corridor, a lift opened. Peter ushered everyone inside. The doors slid closed with a hiss. His eyes scanned the cabin, noting every corner, every panel, every hidden observation point.

A faint click sounded. Peter froze. Kael's hand hovered over the weapon beneath his suit. Nyx's fingers hovered over the tablet, red indicators blinking like warning lights.

In the reflection of the steel doors, a shadow shifted outside. Someone had survived the chaos above. Someone was still hunting them.

Peter exhaled slowly. His chest burned from adrenaline, sweat slicked his skin. He was alive. His team was alive. But the penthouse, the empire, the life he had taken for granted—all of it lay in ruins.

The city below continued, unaware, lights streaming along avenues, cars moving through intersections, oblivious to the violence that had erupted in a tower above.

Yet in the glow of the metropolis, Peter Lim felt fear he had never known.

Somewhere, someone smiled.

And he had no idea who.
