Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Unseen Trap

The encounter at the office was just the spark. Akila knew that Suresh wouldn't sit quiet. He was a man driven by greed and fear, a dangerous combination. As she walked back to her small house, she felt the eyes of the town on her. They weren't just curious anymore; they were suspicious.

"Let them watch," she thought. "A shadow is most powerful when everyone is looking at the light."

That evening, Akila spent hours looking through the old black diary she had found. It wasn't just a diary; it was a record of every transaction, every lie, and every bribe Suresh had taken during his time at the office. Her father had kept these records secretly, perhaps knowing that one day they would be the only shield his daughter would have.

Suddenly, a loud knock echoed through the thin wooden door. Akila's heart raced, but her hands remained steady. She hid the diary under the floorboard and opened the door.

It was Inspector Rathnam, a man known for being in Suresh's pocket.

"We received a complaint, Akila," he said, his voice dripping with false authority. "Suresh says you've been threatening him at his workplace. Disturbing the peace is a serious offense."

Akila didn't flinch. She looked him straight in the eye. "Threatening? I only went to ask for what is mine, Inspector. Is asking for justice a crime in this town now?"

Rathnam leaned in, a cold smile on his face. "Justice is expensive, girl. A girl like you can't afford it. Stay in your limits, or the shadows won't be the only place you'll be hiding."

As he walked away, Akila realized the trap was closing. But she wasn't the prey this time. She was the one laying the bait.
