Chapter 4 - The First Encounter

Chapter 4 — The First Encounter

The next morning, Lina woke to sunlight slicing through the heavy curtains. The mansion was quiet, almost too quiet. She rubbed her eyes, trying to shake the lingering tension from the night before.

A soft knock at the door made her jump.

"Breakfast," a voice called.

It was the butler, polite but firm.

As Lina followed him down the hall, her stomach churned. Every step felt like walking deeper into another world — a world she hadn't asked to enter.

At the dining room, Adrian was already seated. He didn't look at her as she approached.

"Sit," he commanded, not unkindly, but with that same icy presence that made her heart race.

Lina hesitated before taking the seat across from him. The table was elegantly set — fine china, silver cutlery, steam rising from perfectly cooked food. She wasn't sure whether to be impressed or intimidated.

"You will eat properly," Adrian said, his eyes finally meeting hers. "Weakness is a liability."

She nodded, trying to look composed as she picked up her fork.

Breakfast passed in silence except for the clinking of utensils. Lina's nerves kept her on edge. Every time Adrian glanced at her, it was like he was reading her thoughts.

Finally, he spoke.

"After breakfast, you will attend your first etiquette session. This is part of the rules you agreed to. Behavior is key in this household."

Lina's stomach twisted. Etiquette lessons? She had barely survived school dances, let alone living in a billionaire's mansion.

"And… what if I fail?" she asked, voice small.

Adrian's lips curved ever so slightly.

"Then you learn quickly. Failure is a luxury we cannot afford."

The words weren't cruel, exactly. But they carried a weight that made her shiver.

After breakfast, she followed him into a spacious room filled with mirrors and soft lighting.

"Stand there," Adrian instructed. "Posture. Expression. Presence. Everything you do reflects on this household — and on me."

Lina straightened, trying not to wobble. Every move felt awkward, every glance too slow.

He circled her, like a predator evaluating his territory.

"Not bad," he said finally. "But you must do better. The world won't forgive mistakes, and neither will I."

Her cheeks burned. Shame, embarrassment, and something else — a strange flutter — mixed together.

After the session, Lina returned to her room, exhausted and mentally drained.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, she thought of her mother again. She had done all this for her, and yet…

Her life had changed in ways she could never have imagined.

And as the mansion settled into quiet, Lina realized one terrifying truth:

She was no longer just fighting for her mother's survival.

She was fighting to survive in Adrian Vale's world.
