Sarah shot Jayden a glance, silently wishing she could somehow push the entire problem onto him and escape the impossible situation she had found herself trapped in. Unfortunately, there was no such escape. Keith's voice continued to pour through the phone pressed against her ear, persistent and determined, refusing to give up despite her having made it painfully obvious that she did not want to continue this conversation. Sarah could feel a headache beginning to form. She did not want to answer him, yet remaining silent felt equally awkward. Every second that passed only made her feel more conflicted.
"Sarah, please listen to me," Keith said again, his tone softening with desperation. "I'll come pick you up right now, okay?"
Sarah squeezed her eyes shut for a moment. She had been trying her hardest not to respond, hoping Keith would eventually give up, but hearing him continue speaking without pause finally caused her restraint to slip.
