I did not move an inch from his bedside, already used to the unnerving beeping of the machine. Dread floored me, stealing my breath as I regretted letting him sleep before we could speak. Had I made the biggest mistake of my life by not taking the chance to say goodbye?
The possibility of that ate away at me, chipping at my being as I continued to wait to no avail. I refused to release his hand, letting the warmth remind me that his blood was still pumping. His face lost color with every second that passed.
"Just wake up for me, Dad," I whispered.
But my voice did not reach him. I didn't even notice the door opening until I felt hands on mine. I whipped my head back, coming face-to-face with gold eyes and the almost calming scent of chocolate.
"Rafayel," I breathed.
"I am here," he assured.
More footfalls echoed, and I locked eyes with the other Scions as they filed into the room.
