"Knowing everything that I have done," he finished for me.
The stillness of the medical bay returned, but it wasn't peaceful. It was damning. He closed his eyes, his grip on my hand loosening slightly, not out of weakness, but shame.
"I was in a cult, Aurora," he confessed, the words falling flat and hollow against the sterile walls. "I can't lie to you anymore. I can't look at you and say I was brainwashed. I can't claim I was forced."
He swallowed hard, his throat bobbing against the edge of the sheets.
"I hurt people. Good people. I stood by and watched children die, closing my heart to their screams because I believed in the grand design. I thought it was worth it. I genuinely thought the balance demanded those horrors."
My mind fractured at the admission. He knew. He knew. He knew. Every sweet memory of my childhood, every scraped knee he had kissed, was tainted by the shadow of the monsters he had willingly run with.
