The silence that fell was heavy with unsaid words. I could feel their thoughts, not simply hear them. They wanted to apologize.
That was what it was all about. The birthday had been their show of regret, and everything else that came afterward was just a symptom of their guilt. But I had grown too numb for anger, much less the soft freedom of letting it go. Perhaps my body was simply adapting to the fact that I would be dead when the next full moon came. I already felt like a corpse.
"Aurora—"
"Don't bother asking," I quietly cut him off. "We are far beyond that."
