I waited for him to answer, his eyes drifting far away for yet another moment.
"Your mother was promised a new world without the god that took everything from her, once we woke from the sleep." He pursed his lips, and still they quivered. "But she did not want to leave."
"Why?"
"The guilt," he muttered. "It ate her alive for years while the operations continued in the facility. She stayed with the children."
My lungs ached from holding my breath at every revelation in this convoluted tangle of lives—a past life entirely beyond my scope of imagination.
"She stayed with the first children…"
"Yes, she was the only one who cared for them. She could not let them be alone. So she closed everyone's pods and stayed. If she wasn't killed, she must have grown old with them while they did not age, just like the Scions."
In a way, I could not help but let pity seep in as I thought of her life and actions. She seemed like a deeply conflicted figure.
