Chapter 32 - CHAPTER 31 (CONTINUED) — SUPPORTING STUDENTS’ PERSONAL TRIALS

Tarin Valcrest — The Storm-Swept Canyon

Tarin stepped onto a narrow stone ledge overlooking a yawning canyon. Lightning crackled across the sky, responding to his own aura, and every gust of wind threatened to throw him off balance. The canyon seemed alive, every rock trembling in anticipation of his next movement.

"Focus…" he muttered under his breath, eyes scanning the approaching shadow beasts. Black serpents with jagged scales slid from the cliffs, hissing, their eyes like molten copper.

He extended his hands, summoning arcs of lightning. They danced across the canyon, illuminating jagged cliffs and loose platforms. One bolt struck a serpent mid-air, sending it tumbling into the swirling mist below. Another bolt split in two, deflecting the claw swipe of a smaller, agile shadow wolf.

The canyon itself shifted with the intensity of his magic. Rocks slid into the wind, creating precarious platforms. Tarin leapt, landing on a moving stone just as a gust nearly tore him off. He flicked his fingers, lightning spiraling to meet a hissing shadow cobra that lunged from the edge. The beast screeched and fell back into a cloud of black mist.

Every movement required calculation. Too much energy, and the canyon would react violently, striking him with falling debris or spiking walls of lightning. Too little, and the shadow beasts would overwhelm him.

Tarin's mind raced, heart pounding. Control… precision… timing. He dodged a spike of wind, pivoted midair, and sent a chain of lightning arcing along the canyon walls, creating a barrier while simultaneously striking a trio of serpents. Sweat stung his eyes as he balanced on the jagged edge. He had survived, but only by the narrowest margin.

Selina Duskwood — The Mirror Chamber

Selina's arena was a hall of endless mirrors. Each reflection moved independently, twisting her own image into monstrous, screaming versions of herself. Phantom hands reached out from the glass, trying to drag her inside. The air was thick with whispers, echoing doubts and fears.

She moved cautiously, wand raised, casting illusions to confuse the phantoms. Every step was calculated. A false floor opened beneath her, forcing her to leap onto a mirrored platform that shimmered dangerously. Behind her, an illusion of Dorian leered, taunting her with impossible accusations.

Selina's breath came in short gasps. It's all illusions… control the illusions… She extended her own shadow magic, wrapping the phantoms in twisting chains of darkness. The mirror reflections shrieked, shattering into fragments that rained down around her.

From the corner, another mirror split open, releasing a swarm of shadow spiders that skittered across the walls. Selina flicked her wand, summoning twisting illusions of herself to distract the spiders while she struck them down. One by one, the beasts dissolved, leaving her standing, trembling, but victorious.

Her reflection stared back at her—this time unaltered. Selina exhaled slowly, feeling a surge of control and confidence.

Joran Flint — The Lava-Filled Cavern

Joran stepped into a cavern of molten rock, heat waves warping the air. The floor shimmered with molten cracks, and fire beasts emerged, claws dripping with flame. Each step could ignite a platform, sending him plummeting into lava below.

He narrowed his eyes, feeling the heat pulse against his skin. Fire coiled in his palms as he readied his spells. A lizard-like magma beast lunged from a fissure, spitting molten venom. Joran ducked, rolling, and unleashed a precise fire blast, incinerating the attack midair.

The cavern was alive, responding to every burst of magic. Lava spouts erupted from the ground, forcing him to leap and calculate angles precisely. One misstep, and the molten floor would claim him. Another magma beast emerged from the shadows, snapping its jaws. Joran twisted, sending a column of flame shooting upward, scorching the beast and clearing a path to a safe ledge.

He felt sweat streaming down his face. Every strike required absolute control, every movement precision. One moment of hesitation, one miscast spell, and the cavern would be his grave. But Joran's calm, meticulous mind thrived in the chaos.

Elara Moonshade — The Nightmarish Swamp

Elara stepped into a swamp of black fog. Vines with thorns twisted like serpents, reaching for her feet. Shadow reeds grew rapidly around her, curling and twisting toward her with deadly intent. The water beneath glimmered with an unnatural darkness, hiding unseen creatures.

She gripped her shadow blade tightly, heart racing. Mist coiled around her legs, threatening to pull her under. A shadow eel lunged from the water, fangs snapping. Elara swung her chains, wrapping them around the eel and yanking it back. The mist hissed as the eel dissolved into harmless vapor.

More vines lunged, roots twisted like snakes, trying to bind her. Elara ducked, spun, and struck with calculated precision, chains lashing out to restrain multiple threats at once. Sweat dripped into her eyes, but she focused, repeating the mantra in her mind: Control the shadow… or the shadow controls you.

A chorus of croaks and growls echoed around her. Beasts emerged—shadow frogs with razor teeth, serpentine water snakes, and spectral crocodiles lurking in the fog. Every movement required split-second judgment. Elara danced across the swamp, chains snapping, shadows lashing, mist parting around her as she navigated the deadly trial.

By the end, she was bruised, wet, and exhausted, but she had survived. Her chains quivered slightly, as if exhausted from the fight. She took a deep breath, lifting her blade, realizing that every challenge had strengthened her control over her shadow magic.
