Chapter 38 - CHAPTER 37 — WHEN THE ARENA TURNED CRUEL

The morning began with a silence that felt wrong.

Usually, the academy grounds buzzed with whispers, footsteps, and the nervous excitement of students preparing for another brutal training day. But today, the corridors felt hollow. The echoes of footsteps sounded louder than usual.

Because everyone knew.

The trials were changing.

And the beasts were becoming deadlier.

Inside the massive circular arena, dark clouds gathered above the enchanted ceiling. The magical barrier surrounding the arena hummed with power, glowing faintly blue.

Rows of students sat in the stone stands, their faces tense.

Some whispered nervously.

Some stared down at their hands.

Some simply looked… afraid.

Because yesterday, two students had died.

Not injured.

Not unconscious.

Dead.

And the academy had continued as if it were normal.

At the highest balcony overlooking the arena stood Principal Alaric Vareth, a tall man with long silver hair tied behind his back. His sharp eyes scanned the arena below like a hawk studying prey.

Beside him stood several teachers.

Among them was Professor Darius Halden, the combat instructor, his arms crossed as always. His expression remained unreadable.

"Begin the trial," the principal said calmly.

The arena rumbled.

The ground trembled violently.

Students immediately stood up in shock.

"What—what's happening?!" someone shouted.

CRACK.

The stone floor split apart like broken glass.

Sections of the arena suddenly shifted and lifted. Massive stone platforms rose from the ground, separating students into groups.

Some were isolated.

Others found themselves surrounded by unfamiliar classmates.

The arena had changed its structure.

Professor Halden spoke quietly from above.

"The battlefield adapts now."

His voice echoed through the entire arena.

"You will face beasts that learn from you."

A wave of fear spread through the students.

Kael landed on a raised stone platform with four other students.

Lena stood beside him, gripping her staff tightly.

Across from them were two boys and a girl.

One of the boys, Marcus, looked pale.

"This is bad… this is really bad…"

The other boy, Rowan, tried to stay calm but sweat ran down his face.

"Just focus."

The girl, Talia, lifted her twin daggers nervously.

Then the air shifted.

A cold wind blew through the arena.

Something was coming.

From the darkness below the platform…

A creature climbed up.

At first, it looked like a wolf.

But then it changed.

Its bones twisted beneath its skin.

Its body stretched unnaturally.

Its claws extended longer.

And its eyes glowed with unnatural intelligence.

Professor Halden's voice echoed again.

"Adaptive beast: Night Stalker Variant."

The monster slowly circled them.

Watching.

Learning.

Kael felt something unsettling.

This creature wasn't rushing to attack.

It was studying them.

The First Attack

Suddenly

The beast lunged.

Its speed shocked everyone.

Marcus screamed and threw a fire spell.

"Flame Burst!"

The fire shot toward the beast.

But the creature twisted mid-air.

It avoided the attack completely.

It landed behind Marcus.

Before he could react

SLASH.

Its claws tore across his chest.

Blood sprayed across the stone floor.

Marcus collapsed instantly.

Dead.

For a moment, no one moved.

The shock froze them.

Talia screamed.

"Oh god!"

But the beast wasn't finished.

It turned its glowing eyes toward the next target.

Rowan

Rowan raised his hands, summoning wind magic.

"Gale Push!"

A powerful blast of wind struck the beast.

The creature slid backward slightly.

But then something terrifying happened.

Its muscles shifted again.

Its claws dug into the ground.

And the wind stopped affecting it.

It had adapted.

Kael realized it instantly.

"It's learning our magic!"

But Rowan panicked.

He cast the same spell again.

"Gale Push!"

This time…

The beast didn't move at all.

It ran forward.

Faster than before.

Rowan tried to step back

Too slow.

The creature's jaw opened wide.

CRUNCH.

Its teeth sank into his neck.

Blood poured down his clothes.

Rowan collapsed.

Dead.

Lena covered her mouth in horror.

Two students gone.

In less than a minute.

Chaos Across the Arena

All around the arena, similar scenes unfolded.

Students screamed.

Beasts evolved mid-fight.

Spells that worked once stopped working the second time.

Some students fought bravely.

Others froze in terror.

On another platform

A student named Eric tried to fight a massive lizard-like creature.

He launched ice magic repeatedly.

But the beast's skin hardened like stone.

It smashed its tail across his body.

His ribs shattered instantly.

Eric fell off the platform.

His body hit the lower arena floor with a sickening crack.

Dead.

Nearby, Sophia, a quiet girl known for her healing abilities, tried desperately to save an injured classmate.

But a shadow beast appeared behind her.

Its claws pierced through her back before she could even scream.

She collapsed beside the boy she was trying to heal.

Both of them died within seconds.

The arena had become a slaughterhouse

Back on Kael's platform, the Night Stalker circled slowly.

Now only three remained.

Kael.

Lena.

Talia.

The beast watched them carefully.

It had learned something already.

Fire.

Wind.

It wouldn't fall for those again.

Kael clenched his fists.

His mind raced.

If they used predictable attacks, they would die like the others.

This beast adapted.

Which meant…

They needed unpredictability.

"Listen," Kael said quickly.

"We attack together."

Talia swallowed nervously.

"What if it adapts again?"

Kael looked directly at the beast.

"Then we don't give it time."

The creature suddenly crouched low.

Preparing to attack again.

Lena whispered softly.

"I'm scared…"

Kael didn't look away from the beast.

"Good."

His voice was calm.

"That means you're still alive."

The Night Stalker lunged.

And the real battle began

From the balcony, the teachers watched silently.

Some students were dying.

But no one interfered.

One teacher finally spoke.

"This is too dangerous."

But Principal Vareth shook his head slowly.

"They must understand."

His cold gaze watched the bloodstained arena below.

"Magic is not a game."

Another student screamed in the distance.

The principal continued.

"It is survival."

The Truth Revealed

Below, Kael barely dodged the beast's claws.

The creature was faster now.

Stronger.

Deadlier.

And across the arena, surviving students slowly realized the same horrifying truth.

The academy wasn't testing them.

It was selecting who deserved to live.

And who didn't.
