Chapter 46 - Chapter 46 – The Breaking News

The first week after the trip passed in a strange, suspended rhythm. The city heat had fully arrived—humid, sticky, the kind that made clothes cling and hair frizz. Sora and Akira still met almost every day, but the easy lightness of the onsen town had been replaced by something heavier. Not distance, exactly. More like the weight of knowing something was coming.

They sat in the café on a Thursday afternoon—same table, same iced drinks—but the air between them felt different. Sora kept glancing at her phone. Akira kept glancing at her.

She finally set the phone face-down. "They called again, didn't they?"

Akira nodded once. "This morning. Mother. She said they're serious about the support. No tuition help. No dorm allowance. Nothing."

Sora exhaled slowly through her nose. "They're trying to force your hand."

Akira looked out the window—watching people hurry past under umbrellas. "They think if they make it hard enough, I'll back down."

Sora reached across the table, took his hand. "And are you backing down?"

Akira's thumb brushed over her knuckles. "No."

She smiled—small, fierce. "Good. Because I'm not either."

They sat in silence for a while—hands linked, iced matcha melting slowly.

Sora spoke quietly. "We need a plan. Realistically. Tokyo U dorms are cheap but not free. Books, food, transport… it adds up."

Akira nodded. "I have some savings from part-time tutoring last year. Not enough for everything, but a start."

Sora tilted her head. "I can get a job. Café, convenience store, whatever. I'm fast on my feet."

Akira's mouth curved—just a little. "You'd be terrible at customer service."

"Hey!" She laughed, swatting his arm. "I can be polite when I want to."

Akira raised an eyebrow. "You once told a teacher 'your test was chaotic' to his face."

Sora grinned. "He deserved it."

They laughed—soft, real—until the moment faded.

Sora sobered. "We'll make it work. Together."

Akira squeezed her hand. "Together."

Later that evening, they walked to the park near Sora's house—same bench under the same tree, now heavy with green leaves instead of petals.

Sora leaned against him. "I keep thinking about Tokyo. Dorms. Classes. New people."

Akira's arm went around her shoulders. "You nervous?"

"A little." She rested her head on his chest. "What if we get busy? What if we drift? What if your parents win?"

Akira's voice was low. "We won't drift. We'll make time. Calls. Visits. Study dates. Whatever it takes."

Sora looked up at him. "You sound so sure."

"Because I am sure about you."

She smiled—teary, soft.

Akira leaned down—kissed her gently.

She kissed him back—deeper.

They stayed like that—kissing slow and certain—until the park lights flickered on.

When they pulled apart, Sora whispered, "We're going to be okay."

Akira nodded. "We're going to be more than okay."

They walked her home—hands linked, steps slow.

At her gate, she turned to him.

"Text me when you get home."

"Always."

She kissed him once more—quick, sweet.

He watched her go inside.

Then he walked home—alone, but not lonely.

The future was hard.

But it was theirs.
