The train ride back was quiet.
Sora slept against Akira's shoulder for most of it—hair spilling across his arm, breath soft and even.
Akira watched the landscape slide past—mountains giving way to fields, fields to suburbs, suburbs to city.
His phone buzzed twice.
Mother.
He didn't answer.
When they arrived at the station, evening had settled—streetlights flickering on, air cool with the promise of summer rain.
Sora woke slowly—blinked, smiled at him.
Akira brushed hair from her face.
They walked to her house first.
At the gate she stopped.
"Text me when you get home."
Akira nodded.
She rose on tiptoes—kissed him softly.
He kissed her back—lingering.
She slipped inside.
Akira walked home alone.
The house lights were on.
He stepped into the genkan—removed shoes.
His parents waited in the living room.
Mother sat with hands folded. Father stood near the window.
Akira bowed slightly.
Mother spoke first. "You were gone four days."
Akira nodded. "With Sora. In an onsen town."
Father's jaw tightened.
Mother continued. "You didn't ask permission."
"I'm an adult."
Father's voice was cold. "You're still under this roof. Under our support."
Akira met his gaze. "I know."
Mother's tone softened—almost pleading. "We only want what's best for you. Exams. University. A clear path."
Akira's voice was steady. "My path includes her."
Father exhaled sharply. "Then you choose her over us."
Akira shook his head. "I'm not choosing against you. I'm choosing for myself."
Silence stretched.
Mother looked away.
Father spoke quietly. "We will not support this. No tuition help. No living allowance. If you continue this relationship… you do it alone."
Akira's chest tightened.
He bowed—deep, formal.
"Thank you for raising me. I'm grateful."
He turned.
Walked to his room.
Closed the door.
Sat on the edge of his bed.
Stared at his phone.
Texted Sora.
Home. Parents… not happy.
Her reply came fast.
I'm here. Whatever happens.
Akira exhaled.
He lay back—staring at the ceiling.
The future was no longer certain.
But it was still theirs.
He closed his eyes.
And smiled.
