Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 – Days of Quiet

The onsen town arrived like a sigh.

Wooden ryokan lined narrow streets, lanterns swaying in the breeze, steam drifting from hidden vents. The air smelled of sulfur and pine. Distant bells rang from small shrines tucked into hillsides.

Their room overlooked a private garden—low table, tatami mats, two futons laid side by side. Sliding doors opened to a small wooden porch with an open-air bath fed by the hot spring.

Sora stood in the doorway a long time, taking it in.

Akira set their bags down carefully.

They didn't speak at first.

Sora slipped off her shoes, stepped onto the tatami. The floor was cool, yielding. She walked to the porch, breathed in the steam rising from the stone basin.

Akira followed.

They sat on the edge—feet dangling above the water.

The silence stretched—comfortable, thick with everything they carried.

Sora dipped her toes in first. Warmth climbed her calves like a slow tide.

Akira watched her.

She glanced back. "Come in."

He hesitated—then rolled up his jeans, sat beside her, feet in the water.

Their knees touched.

Neither moved away.

The sun slipped lower, painting the garden gold.

Sora leaned her head on his shoulder.

Akira's arm went around her—slow, careful.

They stayed like that until the sky turned lavender.

Dinner arrived on trays—small dishes of seasonal vegetables, grilled fish, steaming rice, miso with floating tofu. They ate at the low table—cross-legged, quiet.

Sora watched Akira eat—precise movements, careful bites.

She smiled to herself.

After dinner they changed into yukata—cotton robes provided by the ryokan. Sora's was pale green with white cranes. Akira's was dark navy.

They looked at each other—awkward, smiling.

Sora laughed first—soft, nervous.

Akira's ears turned pink.

They stepped onto the porch again.

The private bath steamed under stars.

Sora glanced at him.

Akira glanced back.

She spoke quietly. "We don't have to… do anything."

Akira nodded. "We don't."

They sat on the porch steps—robes loose, shoulders touching.

Sora rested her head on his shoulder again.

Akira's arm circled her.

They watched the steam rise.

Sora spoke into the quiet. "I used to think you hated me because I was loud. Because I was messy. Because I never stayed in line."

Akira's thumb traced slow circles on her arm.

"I never hated you," he said. "I hated how you made me feel… less certain."

Sora lifted her head. "Less certain?"

Akira looked at the stars. "You made me question everything. My rankings. My plans. My control. You were the only thing I couldn't predict. And I hated that I liked it."

Sora's throat tightened.

Akira continued. "Now I don't want to predict anything. I just want to be here. With you."

Sora turned to face him.

Their faces were close.

She leaned in—slow.

Akira met her halfway.

The kiss was gentle—lips brushing, lingering, deepening by degrees.

Hands slid to waists.

Breath mingled.

When they pulled apart, Sora rested her forehead against his.

"I love you," she whispered.

Akira's voice cracked. "I love you too."

They kissed again—deeper, slower.

Then Sora stood—offered her hand.

Akira took it.

They stepped inside.

Futons waited—side by side.

They lay down—facing each other.

Hands clasped between them.

No more words.

Just breathing.

Just presence.

Just them.
