Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – The First Fall

The rain began without warning.

Dark clouds swallowed the sky, and the air inside the house felt heavier than usual. Meera stood before the mirror, her fingers trembling over her stomach.

Two months.

Two silent, beautiful months.

She had delayed telling Arjun, waiting for the "perfect moment."

But perfection never came.

That evening, she decided she couldn't hide it anymore.

The Revelation

Arjun entered the room, slightly tired from work. Shadow followed him closely, brushing against his legs.

"Arjun… I need to tell you something," Meera said softly.

He loosened his tie. "Can it wait? I'm exhausted."

"No. It can't."

Something in her voice made him pause.

She stepped forward.

"I'm pregnant."

Silence.

Complete, suffocating silence.

Arjun's expression didn't change at first. Then slowly, disbelief replaced it.

"What?"

"I'm going to have our baby," she whispered, tears of hope shining in her eyes.

Shadow barked loudly.

Arjun's face hardened.

"How did this happen?"

The question pierced her heart.

"It's our child, Arjun…"

"I told you I didn't want this!" he snapped.

Meera stepped back as if slapped.

"You went against me?"

"I went for us!"

"You betrayed my trust."

The word betrayed echoed painfully.

She had expected shock. Maybe anger.

But not rejection.

"Are you seriously choosing a dog over your own child?" she asked, her voice breaking.

"Don't twist this!" he shouted. "You knew I wasn't ready!"

Shadow barked again, louder this time, as if supporting him.

And once again, Arjun bent down to calm the dog.

Not his wife.

A Mother's Smile

Savitri had been listening from outside.

When Arjun stormed out of the room, she entered calmly.

"So it's true," she said softly.

Meera wiped her tears. "Yes."

Savitri's lips curved into a smile that didn't reach her eyes.

"You forced this."

"I didn't force anything. This is my right."

Savitri's expression darkened.

"Rights come after permission in this house."

Meera felt a chill run down her spine.

Savitri leaned closer and whispered:

"Not every pregnancy survives."

The words were low.

Dangerous.

Then she walked away as if nothing had happened.

The Uneasy Nights

The house changed after that day.

Arjun barely spoke to Meera.

He avoided eye contact.

At night, he slept facing away from her.

Shadow now growled whenever Meera came too close.

One night, Meera woke up feeling uneasy.

A strange smell filled the air.

Burnt herbs.

She stepped outside the room quietly.

The storeroom door was slightly open.

Dim candlelight flickered inside.

Through the crack, she saw Savitri sitting on the floor, whispering unfamiliar chants.

Black threads tied around lemons.

Ash spread in a circle.

Meera's heartbeat pounded loudly.

Before she could see more, Shadow suddenly appeared behind her and barked aggressively.

Savitri turned.

Their eyes met.

For a second.

Then Savitri calmly blew out the candle.

"Why are you wandering at night?" she asked coolly.

Meera couldn't answer.

Because fear had finally entered her heart.

The Pain

A week later, Meera felt sharp pain in her lower abdomen.

It started small.

Then grew stronger.

She held the wall, breathing heavily.

"Arjun…" she called weakly.

He was in the living room playing with Shadow.

He didn't hear.

The pain intensified.

She collapsed.

The sound finally reached him.

Arjun rushed in.

"Meera!"

Blood.

Just a little.

But enough to turn everything cold.

The Hospital

White walls.

Bright lights.

Cold silence.

Meera lay on the hospital bed, her eyes half open.

Arjun stood outside, restless.

Raghav sat quietly beside him.

After what felt like forever, the doctor came out.

"I'm sorry," she said gently. "The pregnancy couldn't be saved."

The world stopped.

Arjun's face drained of color.

"What… what do you mean?"

"It was a miscarriage."

Inside the room, Meera stared blankly at the ceiling.

Tears rolled silently.

Her hand moved slowly to her stomach.

Empty.

Completely empty.

She didn't scream.

She didn't cry loudly.

She just felt something inside her die.

Suspicion

Later that night, Raghav sat beside her bed.

"I'm sorry, beta," he said softly.

She turned her face toward him.

"Baba… it wasn't natural."

He frowned slightly.

"What do you mean?"

She hesitated.

Then whispered, "Maa was doing something… strange rituals."

Raghav stayed silent.

He had noticed changes in Savitri lately.

But he had never imagined…

Before he could say anything, Savitri entered the room.

Her face was calm.

Almost peaceful.

"God's will," she said quietly.

Meera looked at her.

And for the first time, she saw it clearly.

Not sadness.

Not sympathy.

Relief.

The Breaking Point

Back home, the atmosphere felt darker.

Arjun sat alone in the bedroom.

Shadow resting beside him.

He looked lost.

For the first time, guilt crept into his heart.

Had he been too harsh?

Had his rejection caused stress?

He remembered her hopeful smile when she told him.

And how he crushed it.

Meera entered the room slowly.

She looked pale.

Weak.

But her eyes had changed.

There was no softness left.

"Are you happy now?" she asked quietly.

Arjun looked up, shocked.

"How can you say that?"

"Our child is gone," she whispered. "And all you cared about was your dog."

"That's not fair!"

"Nothing about this was fair."

Shadow began growling again.

Meera looked at the dog directly.

And for the first time—

She didn't feel fear.

She felt anger.

Deep, burning anger.

Chapter Ending

That night, Meera sat alone near the temple, tears flowing silently.

She folded her hands.

"If you are watching, God… give me strength."

In another room, Savitri tied a black thread tightly and smiled faintly.

Shadow howled suddenly at midnight.

A long, eerie sound.

As if celebrating something.

But somewhere deep inside the house—

A storm had begun to rise.

And Meera was no longer the same innocent bride.

She had lost her child.

Now, she would fight.
