Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 – The Weight of What Was Unsaid

Morning arrived quietly, as if afraid to disturb the tension that had settled inside the house overnight.

Nothing looked different.

And yet—everything had changed.

Meera woke up slowly, her body still weak from the previous night. For a few seconds, she didn't move, her hand instinctively resting over her stomach.

A soft breath escaped her lips when she felt nothing wrong.

Still safe.

Still there.

But the fear hadn't left her.

It lingered… deep inside, like a shadow she couldn't escape.

The hospital room felt too quiet after everything that had happened. Machines hummed softly in the background, a constant reminder of how close she had come to losing everything again.

She turned her head slightly.

Arjun was sitting beside her.

Not sleeping.

Not using his phone.

Just… sitting.

Watching.

For a moment, she didn't recognize that version of him.

"You should rest," she said quietly.

Arjun looked at her, as if pulled out of his thoughts.

"I'm fine."

"You've been here all night."

"I know."

His answers were short.

But there was something different in them.

Something that hadn't been there before.

Presence.

A silence stretched between them—not uncomfortable, but unfamiliar.

Arjun leaned forward slightly, his hands clasped together as if he was holding something invisible.

"I didn't know it would get this bad," he said finally.

Meera didn't respond.

Because she had heard similar words before.

And they had changed nothing.

"I thought…" he continued slowly, struggling to find the right words, "I thought things would settle on their own."

Meera let out a faint, tired breath.

"Things don't settle on their own, Arjun," she said.

"They break. Quietly. And by the time you notice… there's nothing left to fix."

Her voice wasn't angry.

That made it worse.

Arjun lowered his gaze.

For the first time, he didn't try to defend himself.

Didn't try to explain.

Because deep inside—

He knew she was right.

Later that afternoon, Raghav entered the room.

Relief washed over his face when he saw Meera awake.

"How are you feeling, beta?" he asked gently.

"Better," she replied softly.

He nodded, but his eyes moved toward Arjun.

There was something unspoken in that glance.

A silent expectation.

A question Arjun wasn't ready to answer yet.

"You should take her away from that house for some time," Raghav said after a pause.

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Necessary.

Arjun looked up.

"For how long?"

"As long as it takes," Raghav replied firmly. "Until she's safe."

Safe.

The word echoed in Arjun's mind.

Safe from what?

From whom?

He already knew the answer.

He just hadn't accepted it yet.

Meera closed her eyes slowly.

"I'm not going anywhere," she said.

Both men looked at her.

"You need rest," Arjun said.

"I need stability," she replied. "And running away won't give me that."

Raghav frowned slightly. "This is not running away."

"It will feel like it," she said quietly.

The conversation ended there.

Not because it was resolved—

But because no one had the strength to continue.

By evening, Meera was discharged.

The journey back home felt longer than usual.

No one spoke much.

Even silence felt cautious.

When they reached the house, the atmosphere shifted instantly.

Cold.

Watchful.

Unwelcoming.

Savitri stood in the hallway, waiting.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm.

"You're back," she said simply.

Meera didn't respond.

Arjun stepped forward slightly. "Doctor said she needs rest."

Savitri smiled faintly. "Then she should stay in her room."

Her eyes moved to Meera's stomach briefly.

Just a second.

But enough to send a chill through the air.

That night, the house fell silent again.

But it wasn't the same silence as before.

This one felt… heavier.

As if something unseen had taken its place among them.

Arjun stood outside Meera's room for a long time.

His hand lifted slightly toward the door.

Then stopped.

He didn't know what to say.

Didn't know how to fix something he had allowed to break.

After a moment, he stepped back.

And walked away.

Inside, Meera sat near the window, staring into the darkness.

Her mind was no longer confused.

No longer searching for answers.

She had seen enough.

Felt enough.

Lost enough.

Slowly, she placed both hands over her stomach.

"This time…" she whispered, her voice steady despite everything,

"I will choose you. Even if I have to leave everything else behind."

Outside her door, the hallway remained still.

But not empty.

Shadow lay there, its eyes half-open, watching the faint light coming from under the door.

Unmoving.

Unblinking.

And from the other end of the house, Savitri stood in the darkness, her fingers tightening slowly around a black thread.

Her calm expression had cracks now.

Because something had changed.

Something she could no longer fully control.

Chapter Ending

The night deepened.

The house slept.

But not peacefully.

Because within its walls—

Three hearts were changing.

One, learning to fight.

One, beginning to regret.

And one… preparing to destroy again.
