Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 – The House Divides

The wind that night did not calm.

It howled against the windows as if warning the walls of what was coming.

Inside her room, Meera placed her palm gently over her stomach.

Three weeks.

This time she had told no one.

Not Arjun.

Not Raghav.

Certainly not Savitri.

Silence was her shield now.

A Careful Game

The next morning, she behaved exactly the same.

Cooked breakfast.

Served tea.

Even smiled slightly when Shadow circled around her legs.

But she avoided one thing carefully — food and drinks prepared by Savitri.

If Savitri insisted, she would pretend to sip.

Or spill it "accidentally."

She wasn't being paranoid.

She was being cautious.

Because once you survive a fall, you learn where the ground is weak.

Raghav's Observation

Raghav had been watching quietly.

He noticed the tension.

The glances.

The silent hostility.

That afternoon, he called Meera softly.

"Beta, sit."

She obeyed respectfully.

"Tell me honestly… are you planning something?" he asked gently.

She hesitated.

Raghav's eyes were kind.

Not judging.

Not threatening.

Finally, she whispered, "Baba… I'm pregnant."

He inhaled sharply.

For a moment, fear crossed his face.

Then relief.

"Does Arjun know?"

She shook her head.

"Why?"

"Because I don't trust this house."

Her voice did not tremble.

It was firm.

Raghav closed his eyes slowly.

He remembered the miscarriage.

He remembered Savitri's strange late-night rituals.

And for the first time, doubt toward his own wife grew stronger.

"I'll protect you," he said quietly.

Tears filled Meera's eyes.

It was the first time someone had chosen her side.

The Mother's Instinct

But Savitri was not blind.

One evening, she noticed Meera refusing papaya.

Her suspicion sharpened.

Later, she followed Meera quietly.

And when she saw her touching her stomach protectively—

The truth burned inside her.

"She dared again," Savitri muttered.

That night, Savitri reopened the wooden ritual box.

But this time, her hands were not steady.

They were desperate.

"Nothing will replace my son," she whispered fiercely.

Shadow sat beside her, unusually restless.

As if absorbing her anger.

The First Division

The tension finally exploded at dinner.

Savitri placed a bowl in front of Meera.

"Drink this," she ordered.

"What is it?" Meera asked calmly.

"Herbal tonic."

"I'm not feeling like it."

Savitri's voice hardened. "Since when do daughters-in-law refuse elders?"

Raghav suddenly spoke.

"If she doesn't want it, let it be."

Savitri turned sharply. "Why are you interfering?"

"Because I can see what you're doing."

The table fell silent.

Arjun looked confused. "What is happening?"

Raghav stood up slowly.

"She is pregnant."

The words dropped like a bomb.

Arjun froze.

"What?"

He looked at Meera.

She met his eyes steadily.

"Yes."

Shock. Anger. Fear. Conflict.

Everything flashed across his face.

"You hid it again?" he asked.

"I protected it," she replied quietly.

Savitri slammed her hand on the table.

"This is manipulation!"

"No," Raghav said firmly. "This is motherhood."

Arjun looked between them.

His mother on one side.

His wife and father on the other.

The invisible line had finally been drawn.

Teams

That night, the house physically separated.

Savitri moved her things into the opposite wing.

Shadow followed her.

Arjun stood in the middle of the hallway, torn.

Meera watched silently.

For the first time—

She did not beg.

She did not cry.

She simply waited.

After a long pause, Arjun walked toward his mother's side.

The choice was clear.

But this time—

It hurt him too.

The Dark Attempt

A few nights later, Meera felt sudden dizziness.

Her vision blurred.

She held the wall tightly.

Raghav rushed to her side.

"Did you eat anything unusual?"

She shook her head weakly.

Meanwhile, in her room, Savitri sat before a dim flame, whispering intensely.

Her face was pale with obsession.

But suddenly—

The flame went out on its own.

Wind entered from nowhere.

Shadow began whining loudly.

Savitri's chanting faltered.

For the first time—

Fear touched her.

Arjun's Conflict

Arjun couldn't sleep.

He stared at the ceiling, Shadow resting near him.

But something felt different.

Every time he closed his eyes—

He saw Meera collapsing at the hospital.

He heard the doctor's voice again.

"Miscarriage."

And now… she was risking everything again.

Was he protecting Shadow?

Or destroying his own blood?

He turned to look at his mother's closed door.

Then toward Meera's side of the house.

His heart felt like it was being pulled apart.

A Quiet Promise

In her room, Meera sat near the temple.

She folded her hands.

"If this child survives… I will leave this house."

It was not a threat.

It was a vow.

She would not raise her baby in fear.

Outside her door, Raghav stood silently.

He had heard everything.

And he knew—

Soon, he would have to make a choice too.

Chapter Ending

Late at night, thunder shook the sky.

Shadow suddenly ran toward Meera's door and began scratching violently.

Growling.

Aggressive.

As if trying to break in.

Inside, Meera woke up frightened.

Raghav rushed forward and pulled the dog back.

"Enough!" he shouted.

Savitri appeared behind him, eyes blazing.

"Control your daughter-in-law," she hissed.

Raghav looked at her with disappointment.

"No. Control your obsession."

The war inside the house was no longer silent.

It was open.

And no one would walk away unscarred.
