Chapter 28 - Phase Three

The overpass rattled as a truck thundered overhead.

Naomi closed the laptop slowly, the glow of the screen fading from her face. The words failsafe and Echo echoed louder in her head than the city noise around them.

"You said Hollow built the system," she murmured, looking at Keene. "But Echo built something to stop it."

Keene nodded slightly. "Or control it."

Her phone vibrated again.

Echo:

You're close to understanding. But you're still thinking too small.

Naomi's fingers moved fast.

Naomi: Then stop talking in riddles.

A pause.

Longer than before.

Then the message appeared:

Open the file labeled Phase Three.

Naomi hesitated, then reopened the laptop.

A hidden folder blinked at the bottom of the screen — faint, almost invisible before.

PHASE_III

She clicked.

The screen filled with new diagrams — not locations this time, but timelines.

Dates stretching weeks into the future.

Arrows pointing to court appearances, shipment schedules, political fundraisers.

Keene leaned closer, eyes narrowing. "He wasn't planning a single takeover," he muttered. "He was planning a slow shift. Influence."

Naomi scrolled further.

One line pulsed red.

"Trigger: Naomi Glass — Unplanned Variable."

Her breath caught.

"I wasn't part of this," she whispered.

Keene's voice came low. "Maybe you changed it."

Across town, Hollow slammed his notebook shut.

A guard flinched at the sudden noise.

"You okay in there?" the man asked.

Hollow didn't answer.

He stared at the word Echo scratched into the paper.

Someone had inserted themselves into his plan.

Not by accident.

By design.

He leaned against the bars, voice low.

"Show yourself," he murmured into the empty hall.

But only silence answered.

Vale's SUV idled beneath a broken streetlight.

One of his men handed him a tablet.

"They accessed another node," the man said. "Signal bounced through three locations before vanishing."

Vale's eyes darkened.

"She's working with someone," he muttered.

"Echo?" the man asked.

Vale's jaw tightened.

"Find them," he said. "I don't care which ghost it is."

Under the overpass, Naomi stared at the Phase Three file.

Every arrow pointed toward a final point on the map — a courthouse.

Her stomach twisted.

"Hollow wanted control over the system, not just the streets," she whispered.

Keene nodded.

"And Phase Three looks like the moment he steps back into the world… even from inside a cell."

Naomi's phone buzzed again.

Echo:

You see it now.

Naomi: Why help me?

The reply came slower… heavier.

Because Hollow doesn't know everything he built.

Naomi frowned.

What does that mean? she typed.

Three dots blinked.

Then:

It means I was there before the floorboards ever cracked.

Her breath caught.

Keene noticed the shift in her expression.

"What did they say?" he asked.

Naomi hesitated.

"Echo knew Hollow before the robbery," she whispered.

Keene's eyes narrowed.

"Then Echo isn't random," he said quietly. "They're part of the origin."

Wind swept through the overpass, rattling loose debris.

Naomi stared at the Phase Three timeline.

A new line blinked onto the screen — fresh text appearing like it had been typed from somewhere else.

ECHO: Vale moves tonight.

Keene's hand tightened around the steering wheel.

"Where?" he asked.

Another message appeared:

Courthouse steps.

Naomi looked at him.

"That's the end of Phase Three," she said.

Keene started the engine.

"Then we don't wait," he replied.

The car pulled into traffic, headlights cutting through the falling snow — the blueprint shifting in real time as Naomi realized she wasn't just following Hollow's plan anymore.

She was rewriting it.
